    She's so ghastly at her wedding when she introduces her deaf "friend", her lesbian "friend", her bisexual Syrian refugee "friend" and the surrogate mother "friend". What I love about this character is that she's not actually that bad, she's not a proper villain. She's a little annoying, a little cruel, a little offensive, but there are moments where I understand her and empathize with her. And then there are moments where I want to throw mashed potatoes at her face. She's just so real and complex. All the characters that Phoebe Waller-Bridge writes are fleshed out and feel like real people. And of course Olivia Colman was absolutely brilliant.

    @@nimeshsingh4943 it's pretty obvious her and fleabag don't get on and that it's to do with godmother swooping in after fleabag's mother died. If anything, the fact that we know anything about how the two feel and why, in the space of a 20 minute or so episode...is a testament to the writing. We don't have to be shown everything so obviously and have a whole episode on it. The audience is smarter than that, and frankly it'd be boring. Godmother is a part of her life, but she doesn't affect the plot that much. She's kind of a nuisance and that's it. You can disagree, that's fine. I was just offering up an explanation as to what people might be thinking. In a lot of ways leaving it up to the audience and being able to discuss it, is more interesting

    I love the subtle narcissism and passive aggressive remarks of this character. It means that, because it's all written from the perspective of fleabag, you're never quite sure if she really is that horrible from other peoples point of view or if Godmother's image is tainted by fleabags opinions and past experiances.

  • @princevesperal

    @princevesperal

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think she is genuinely flawed, narcissistic and cringe-worthy, but it's only with Fleabag that she is passive-aggressive and particularly cunty, because they don't get along. I think most people would find her quite tolerable, with her constant smile and jovial personality, especially if they didn't have to see her all the time. Even though she tokenizes them, her deaf, lesbian and bisexual Syrian refugee apparently like her enough to attend her wedding. And people flocked to her "sexhibition". So it's not just a matter of Fleabag's perception, but rather her very relationship with godmother, which is tainted.

    Olivia Colman did such a fantastic job playing 'Godmother' that I didn't realize it was Olivia playing her. 😂 I was truly disgusted and uncomfortable by her character in Fleabag. My body and mind reacted just like nails on a chalkboard. I sometimes thought she would just behave or be a better person for a moment. Maybe show empathy... but she never will change because she likes being that way, the centre of attention ALL the time. She reminded me of a few people I've know in my life, and it gave me the same feelings I have around them. Olivia did a fantastic job, she must have loved playing her. 😌
