Godin Ultra A6 Baritone: Does it Suck?

When I unboxed the Godin Ultra A6 baritone guitar and plugged it in, it did work. Does it suck?!?

    Hey everyone! I just want to point out that I got the treble and bass controls mixed up on the transducer pick up. You can definitely hear what the controls are doing to the tone...

    Out of everything you played, the Chords of Orion treatment was, to my ear, the most successful sound for this guitar. Just the transducer? Kinda buzzy. Just the humbucker? A bit muffled. Blended pickups? Getting better. Distortion? Ok, this made me smile. Ambient guitar? Now THAT was working! Absolutely huge sound stage.

    Awesome sound. I would say you cannot judge an instrument by the battery it comes with. Godin has an incredible quality in terms of construction and sound 👌

    You're obviously missing the point. He's not judging the guitar, he is judging Godin as a company. You would expect buying a guitar like this direct from the manufacturer to be inspected before it was shipped out. Obviously, they did not do that if the battery was dead. That would also leave me a bit perplexed and underwhelmed by their quality assurance. To be fair, they likely had checked this guitar out - possibly years ago - and it sat on a shelf in a warehouse like Bill mentioned, but sitting in those conditions long enough for a battery to go completely dead could cause other problems that they obviously would not have known about since they did not test again it _before_ they shipped it.

    I never had access to very good gear (and yes, this Godin is pricey for me), so I've always played a relatively cheap guitar through an internal pickup system. I'll admit the plugged in guitar sound isn't exactly like the sound of a guitar the way we normally hear it, but I'm rather fond of the tone. It's not "real" but it works, particularly in a recording. I like a somewhat coloured acoustic tone anyway, so tonal purity isn't a must have in that case.

    I have a standard Godin A6. To eliminate alot of the "rubber band" sound from the acoustic pickup, run that through a Boss AD2. Now I must grovel, sell some guitars, to get a Godin A6 Baritone. Thanks for sharing the Baritone Guitar that I want! Love your channel by the way.

    I agree with you, however, I think i will be using it more for its unique "semi-acoustic" character, so "rubber bands" ain't so bad in that context.

    OOOOH MAN, did I feel that “it gave me pause” part in my bones. I just bought a new guitar and (despite promises that it was looked over by a luthier) fresh outta the box it had signs that it hadn’t been tended to in a long time. I paid extra too! So yeah, having a guitar shipped over is always a bit of a gamble isn’t it? 😅

    For someone (me) looking for a nice no compromise thin acoustic electric that has a nice fast neck that plays like an electric, should I look elsewhere like maybe a Taylor T5 or kiesel Craig Chaquico? I know the fenders are an option but I’m kinda meh on their aesthetics. Doesn’t seem like there are too many options out there. The Godin A6 ultra seems to nail the value but I already have a Martin acoustic and I want something I can take to acoustic only gigs and still play all the fast lead work that I usually do at our full rock band gigs.

    When I got mine, the battery was dead, too! And then I killed its replacement by forgetting to unplug the cable as it sat in the stand. I do like my A6 baritone, but it is complex. I agree that you need to think of it as a unique instrument. I find myself doing more ambient exotic sounding stuff with it. Would really love to get the Godwin electric oud-like thingee mebob.

    Hey Harry - perhaps part of it is getting your head wrapped around a baritone guitar in general? There is definitely a mindset to get into to understand how a baritone guitar may (or may not) fit into your music. Definitely a unique beast with some great strengths and some significant limitations.

    I own 2 Godin.s One nylon and one HSH. Both SA. I love these guitars. Thought I might want a A6 baritone. Based on the sounds from this video I will pass. The lower strings sound "flappy". How did you tune this guitar? With a shorter neck perhaps you can't turn down to a standard(?) baritone tuning (whatever that is). Finally does this have a compensate bridge. I've played Godin's whose bridge was a straight piece of plastic/bone whose tuning up the staff was horrible.

Though I've watched this video in whole or in part a couple of times, I am now, to my own surprise, reluctant to consider a Godin. Tone matters, and not just in musical instruments.

    Turns out it was more than a dead battery. They shipped me a guitar that had a defective circuit board with a short in it. Again, love the guitar, dislike Godin's QC, as I have had this experience on a prior Godin purchase.

  • @yargnad

    @yargnad

    3 ай бұрын

    Again I don't get how so many people miss the implication of the statement about the dead battery. I thought it would have been obvious - as Bill likely did - hence his lack of further explanation. It should have been obvious (to anyone with the capability to rationalize) that it is a shortcoming in the quality assurance step of order fulfillment. Had they actually checked the guitar out before shipping it, they would have had to put a new battery in, and they likely would have found the defective circuit board. Then, they could have saved themselves and Bill the time and hassle of a return or repair. Eat more fish. It's good for your brain.
