Hi Zack - have you seen N T Wright's recent book on Romans 8? This includes his concurring with a position put forward by one of his former students that a more accurate translation of the Greek for 8:28 would be 'God works all things to good THROUGH (or WITH) those He loves, which fits with his largely vocational overview of the chapter, as well as the reassurance of God's love and strength in the Spirit that you highlight here.
