@@LilBoyHexley Tbh I didn't have a problem with the DMC reboot. Sorta did what it was supposed to do, it got new players into the games lol. The bad publicity from the reboot, got DMC's name into the spot light, and then the remaster kinda popped off. On top of that, the game really did have things that made DMC. . . DMC. Just sort dropped the ball in actually selling it well to the fans.

Chains of Olympus has a killer ending, but most of the game just feels like filler. It's just "you've gotta save Helios for reasons" with gameplay and levels that seem out of GOW1. Ascension's visuals are absolutely beautiful, but the story and gameplay are uninspired and I truly hate the back and forth between playable flashbacks and the prison opening. Feels so out of place in the series, like it's a fake game. Ghost of sparta is amazing, tho. Truly deserves as much love as the numbered entries.

I'm still wondering why Sony hasnt ported the series to PS4 with all the new fans god of four (get it?) gained. Its easy money. Still, I would love a remake of gow1 because it hasnt aged well. Too many annoying sections make it really frustrating to play now a days, not to mention the sequels vastly improved its foundation. A remake like Resident evil 1's (the same game, just with new graphics, enemies, levels, bosses, etc) + gow'1 story (the undisputed best in the series) would be the ultimate god of war game and a perfect way to say goodbye to the greek era.

@@hopelesssituationwarrior6996 nah, remakes should be reserved for Ascension. They could make Rage Meter being more user friendly. Maybe make Rage Meter that didn't go down after every small hit (or completely drained once you stopped hitting), or maybe made them less of a hassle to filled up. Maybe make Rage Meter Attacks only took a portions of the meter instead one full bar, since all of them (aside Hades) are kinda lame (basically treat Rage Meter like Magic Bars, with portions). Also, for f*ck sake, BRING BACK NEW GAME+ FUNNY COSTUMES. It annoys me that even in New Game+, the game subtly kept reminding you to check multiplayer by making the New Game+ costume the Multiplayer's Armors, like c'mon.... *R I S E O F T H E W A R R I O R C A M P A I G N* Before the release of this game, there's a short graphic novel titled "Rise of the Warrior". It tells the story of the playable multiplayer character (the bald guy Kratos almost save in Hecatoncheires). And GODDAMN IT'S GOOD. It tells in depth on how the Furies works, how they ensnares mortals, it even ties in with the Village of Kira and the Oracle before Castor usurps. Also, the fork-lookalike chain weapon used in Multiplayer is apparently this guy's original weapon before he is imprisoned lmao

Correction, "The titan Hechatoncheires" is false. Titans and hechatoncheires are two separate species in Greek mythology, and the same applies to God of War. In fact, Zeus enlisted the help of the hechatonchires to overthrow the titans. That hechatoncheires you're referring to is Aegaeon, the first to break a blood oath, and whose body was turned into a living prison by the Furies. Another famous hechatoncheires you might've heard of is Briareos, whom the deuteragonist of Masamune Shirow's Appleseed is named after. Despite being an original character separate from the myth, he too has multiple eyes, as the hechatoncheires were distinguished by their multiple arms and eyes.

Man, I gotta say, I really loved TGB's analysis on Kratos' characterization here and what he was like by the end of the Greek era. Kratos is a character that's a lot like Caim from Drakengard in my opinion. A character that, when you see him in his proper games, just comes off as an insane, revenge-obsessed, murderous monster, but when you get a full understanding of the shit they experienced prior to that point, and the shit they would go on to experience afterwards, they suddenly become much more tragic, at least in my eyes. I sure as shit don't let the blur of trauma that is their backstories justify or take away from the horrible shit they'd go on to do, but like TGB said, in Kratos' case, when you spend years doing favors to the gods seeking just one thing, and the one thing they give you is not only something you didn't even want, but something they plan to revoke later on, it becomes much, much easier to see why Kratos fell so deep into insanity and hatred seeking his revenge against the forces that repeatedly screwed him over and over because they're a bunch of fickle assholes.

@@EmotionTheory He was the main antagonist character of Drakengard 2 (Frankly, Caim was one of the few things that game absolutely fucking _nailed._ ) and is speculated to be _Red Eye,_ the head of the Legion in the backstory to NieR, but unfortunately, that's about everything in terms of game appearances from Caim, which is a colossal fucking shame IMO since he kicks all kinds of ass. The Drakengard series got more into his backstory and how godawful it was like for Kratos here in Ascenion in the Drakengard 1 and 3 prequel manga, where we see the day his life irrevocably went to shit... and all on his 18th birthday, no less! Like Kratos in God Of War 1, we learn the gist of Caim's backstory in his first game, Drakengard 1, but the manga really shows it off in detail and it's frankly so horrific that, to me at least, it quickly turned Caim into a tragic figure shaped into something monstrous by a merciless, shitty world. The fact that in all of the Drakengard routes, horrible shit keeps happening to him and he gets no happy ending whatsoever doesn't help matters either.

I hated Ascension. I finished the game shortly after completing the series (1-3 and both PSP games) and I felt it was easily the weakest entry of the bunch. The combat would swing wildly from really easy to frustratingly hard (the portion where you get magic for the first time kept kicking my ass and I was on Normal). Kratos tended to blend in with the background which made it easy to lose him on screen (can someone explain to me how it's easy to lose track of a six foot white and red murder hobo?) The story was the least engaging, but that's to be expected when you've already done a prequel story and finished the main story. Where else can Kratos go without it contradicting what's already been established? This game didn't need to be made, but it's existence, IMHO, is all the evidence I needed to get on board with a God of War reboot.

One thing I remember that it had going against it when it came out was the advertising camping behind it. I'm someone who's played everyone of the games when they actually released, and I remember when this one came out that it was actually hard to tell if there was even a single player in it. My younger brother played the multiplayer of this game for the better part of 2013. After finishing God of War (2018), he noted that Kratos' stats are directly ripped from the multiplayer. Even locking the telegraphed L1 + Light/Heavy moves behind a cooldown timer is from the multiplayer mode. This is not mentioning the entirely arbitrary armour system. Some things that were off about Ascension -- aside from the unnecessary and broken autosave system -- include the absence of the series staple post-game challenges, and unique costumes/skins. The latter, as briefly shown in the video (but not commented upon), were multiplayer character skins. Less care was ultimately shown to this game's single-player mode, with it seemingly serving as a multiplayer tutorial.* *There really was no reason to change the parry mechanic from tapping L1 to instead pressing L1+X. It lacked the necessary polish in precision, such that even on higher difficulties, Kratos can block attacks that would have been unblockable in previous titles.

Here is my dream God of War game and its very non-conventional. I want a game that takes place during Kratos' years as an army General for the Spartans. You command large armies in a simplified RTS. However, like in Brutal Legend, you can personally jump into combat at any given time, lending your aide and your powers. Enemy generals can do the same (like the barbarian king with his awesome hammer you see in god of war 2). The combat here will be zoomed in and it controls like the old god of war games, hack and slash/dynasty warriors esque. You can turn the tide of that one battle, but you lose overview of the rest of the battle and sacrifice micro management of the rest of your troops. Throw in magic you unlock throughout the game as the gods bless you more, and mythical creatures you encounter in harder late game armies, as well as the ability to recruit your own creatures. The story follows to where Kratos gain ares blessing and he gains the blades, and after that point you start doing more and more horrific campaigns in servitude to ares. Eventually killing your own family. This will allow us to actually feel Kratos pain more directly, because so far all the tragedies are always in the past and references. Ascension uses flashbacks etc, but I never felt any of the game really made us 100% sympathize and feel his pain. A game like this could do it.

In the old games you had a dozen enemies or more flying around as kratos unleashes his attacks and combos.

@@DomeLP09 there is no dissonance because Kratos is strong all the way through but the game will not be easy because of that. Kratos is actually stronger than he was in the last games according to the director. He unleashes all his power when he needs to. It doesn't make sense for gameplay or for story for him to go all out from beginning to end. Besides at the beginning you can tell he hadn't been in a fight like that in a long time so over time he gets back to where he was and even over that power in the past games. Not to mention he's trying to teach his son how to control his anger. Now that would be dissonance.

@@introduction1266 Yeah, that narrative about Kratos being "actually stronger than he was in the last games" flies completely out of the window as soon as you run into a draugr with purple healthbar that tanks hundreds hits and offs you with single one, or alternatively once you encounter one of those colour-coded plagues of game design which you can't damage at all without switching weapons. So not only is this supposed to be the same madman who toppled the head brass of Greek pantheon single handedly, but the game director would also have us believe this to be the strongest he's ever been (not the only thing Gory Barlog had said in regards to the game, that struck me as complete baloney either), despite the game doing absolutely nothing to actually demonstrate this and instead it sets us up for bunch of loot-grinding BS if we'd want to see even a fraction of that strength in regular combat, since apparently Kratos has gotten too old and lazy now to be bothered to actually try in a fight where him and/or his son could die, without putting some armour on or blinging up his weapons. And ofcourse the Sloth of Sparta can't be bothered to jump over anything without designated button prompt anymore either, even if it'd look like something your average mortal could bypass with relative ease, neccesitating in lot of pointless detours, waiting around for the ginger preteen to throw you a ladder or rope and hideously tedious rockclimbing instead of any actual platforming.

Little mistake, his name is Aegaeon, not Hecatonchires. Hecatonchires just means "one-hundred hander" and describes a type of giant in Greek myth who were the offspring of Gaia and Ouranous. They were born after the Cyclopes, who were born after the Titans, Ouranous thought they were all disgusting so he had all of his children imprisoned underground, in his wife. Kronos later castrated his father Ouranous and freed his fellow Titans, but he told all the Cyclopes and Hecatonchires to go fuck themselves and left them in their underground prison. So when Zeus made plans to overthrow Kronos; all of the cyclopes and hecatonchires sided with him, except for Aegaeon, who inexplicably decided to side against Zeus in the Titanomachy, the war where he prevailed as King of Olympus, he was the only Hecatonchires to do so, which is why the Furies tortured and imprisoned him.

The only gripe I had with this game was Kratos being difficult to see when the camera zoomed out a bit during combat. In terms of gameplay, this was my favourite GoW title. I've also wondered why this GoW title doesn't have a PS4 remaster. I know it wouldn't sell much but I'd definitely appreciate it..

I think with a few tweaks to its mechanics this game really could have been one of the best combat systems ever created. The way they implemented the rage mode and secondary weapons are honestly brilliant. But with that said there are shitty cooldown based items, that do the work for you, and the square square triange combo is more exploitable than ever, thanks to the rage mode where it gets a big explosion effect. Also some of the enemy designs like the brutes with their ground tracking attack can just go, and the bosses are still pretty horrible... A little bit of balancing and some intresting items could have gone a long way, in making Ascension into a classic. Also the counterattack is much better then in the older games, but it really needed a little bit of nerfing. I mean...It's just waaaay too powerful....

Ah Ascension... it was the best looking GoW game before IV came out. That was it. All I got besides that one thing was a mediocre story, lackluster villains, nerfed Blades of Chaos, weakest rage ability to date, lack of new weapons, generic magic attacks, and a depressed Kratos. Those elements made me regret my purchase of Ascension very quickly and I was happy to part with the entry then return to play Chains of Olympus again.

If Ascension came out for the ps4 in place of Dad of war, it would have been received way better since by that time, a nice old school 3rd person action game like God of war would be refreshing. I freaking love Dad of War but they did decide to go for the last of us-esque narrative which the market was oversaturated with then.

Sadly, this is all Sony wants of its first party studios anymore. Just about all the legacy talent behind those excellent games associated with the brand have abandoned ship and gone rogue. Good for the industry, but disappointing for the longtime fans like me who just want a diverse assortment of games to play with that Japanese spirit of creativity and innovation.

@@12ealDealOfficial That's just not true. If it were we wouldn't have just got Returnal/wouldn't be getting the new Ratchet. Sure there's a lot of first party games that are doing their take on the "mature" storytelling Naughty Dog has made their brand, but it's not like every Sony published title is a 15-20 hour story based third person shooter like the Last of Us or Uncharted. You're really devaluing the talent at places like Sucker Punch, Guerilla, Housemarque and Insomniac (just to name a few).

i kinda felt that Ascencion was kinda of a wasted oportunity ,insteady of showing how Kratos escaped from Ares control, would be interresting playing as General Kratos, with him a little bit before his defeat and the pact with Ares(could be a way to introduce the mecanic of taking diferent weapons from the ground),and later having Sparta as a hubworld were you would take missions in the name of Ares, they could even mixed little bit of musou there(another better oportunity to introduce the multiplayer), ending with him killing his own family and discovering that missions were leading to plan of Ares taking over Olimpus, and Kratos messing up his plans and freeing himself from Ares servitude.....

Yeah, I don't know. I only played it once, but the game didn't really stand out to me that much. I appreciate Kratos being more human, but for the most part, it just felt kind of paint by numbers to me. I also remember the camera pulling waaaay too far out at times which made the meter reset on damage feel more frustrating. The meter reset, plus temporary weapon pickups also reminded me of Bayonetta, which made me wonder why I wasn't playing that instead.

God of War always blew my mind, I recall Chains of Olympus being the only one I was a bit unsure of since some of the moves felt a bit odd (Kratos bouncing a few times from being it, as well as his run) but then Ghost of Sparta comes out and does things even the PS2 version didn't do looking drastically better. Three was just an incredible visual spectacle from start to finish. I do recall beating Ascension but it was also so buggy it took me a while at launch.

I really enjoyed Ascension throughout my first play-through but after I beat it on Hard then moved too Titan Mode I did think that the combat wasn't very consistent and when any main bosses or mini-bosses did any sort of attack at all would one hit you and the enemies throughout the whole game had way too much health and it felt like your blades did no damage or on the hardest difficulty everything was too damn expensive to be practical like for 80% of the game your only using the Ares Flame Element because the other ones were too expensive for red orbs and you have too save those orbs for The Blades Of Chaos too the last 2 upgrades combined is 85k orbs then upgrading your Items such as The Clone of Orkos abilitie and your amulet combined they are 10k so thats 95k orbs combined and the elements add even more The Ares one costs 8k total too fully max out and is genuinely the best one while the Hades and Zeus ones are good they are too much for practicality and overall the game is buggy like on my Play-Through of Titan I had become Softlocked and was unable too progress and that kind of killed it for me.

If I were to play the God of War series for the first time, where would you recommend starting? Chronlogical order (presumably starting with Ascension or Chains of Olympus, whichever comes first in the timeline) or release order (God of War 1)? Alternatively, should I just jump straight to the reboot? I imagine release order gives a better gameplay experience owing to mechanical evolution, but maybe chronological is a better narrative experience?
