Fun Fact - the director was actually thinking about doing this movie from Amber's mother-in-law perspective but then they would have to change the name to another song and they weren't able to get the licence for Sympathy for the Devil.

Also why is this called "God Bless the Broken Road"? The song is about how the path to true love isn't a straight line. It's filled with break ups and broken hearts. This movie is about a wife dealing with the death of her husband. It's not a broken road, its a burnt bridge that you have to figure out how to get across.

I've seen a lot of "victim mentality" and fatalistic movies in my day, but this takes the self-damaging cake. The mother character is honestly evil in my opinion, failing to take care of her own child and endangering them both through her own baseless pride. As someone that has lost family members to unexpected tragedy, I cannot understand how selfish and stubborn she acts. She doesn't even appear to be that heartbroken over her husband's death. The mother-in-law is genuinely trying to help, and should get a medal for not lashing out after countless rejections. This is absolutely not how Christians should respond to bereavement.

This movie gave me a similar feeling I had watching "Grave of the fireflies". There was a better option at hand, not a good one, not a permanent one, but a better one than trying to settle everything yourself when it is beyond your capability to do so, but the protagonist kept refusing it. Grave of the Fireflies is still a deep masterpiece and this is none at all but the feeling watching it, oh boy, heavy reminder.

@Mrs. Arthur Morgan Valid point. Shame and honor and not wanting to be a burden are important issues in the interpretation of "Grave of the fireflies". As far as I know that's one major point were there was an obvious split in the reactions the movie caused in western and japanese audiences, when it came to the protagonist's actions and how much one can attach to him. But even being from another culture one still can understand why Seita does the things the way he does them even if one would try to do otherwise. Because Seita is authentic. His mindset is authentic. Is Amber authentic? I doubt it.

The IMDB comments for this movie are hilarious. They all say it's a great movie, the message is uplifting and they think the mother in law is a terrible person. It's like opposite day over there. Which just goes to show what I've always said. Namely the audience for this type of movie doesn't care about the quality or the story so long as the "message" is one they like. And because of that message any flaws the movie might have are immediately forgotten.

Thank you for reminding me that Rosie's Diner existed! I used to eat at the one in Cedar Rapids pretty often back before it closed. I kinda forgot that it existed. I checked, and the one in the movie is indeed the one used to go to. Kind of a shame honestly, it was an awesome place, then it closed, then it reopened, and then it was in this movie.

In a lot of these Christian movies, you can sometimes spot someone signaling they are doing this for the money and HATE it. I have to wonder if the writer included the "mustard seed" as one of those signals because it's a pretty big gaffe in the Bible where Jesus says the mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds- something that wasn't true even where and when he lived and known to be false by his contemporaries. It's always a good one (along with the Bible saying bats are birds or grasshoppers have four legs) to point to when some blowhard claims the Bible is infallible or science has confirmed the Bible's teachings.

His neighbor come by and asks him if he wants a ride in his car. He says no and that God will save him. The neighbor leaves. The flood hits and he is on the second floor of the house. A guy in a boat comes by and asks if he wants a ride. He says no and that God will save him. The guy with the boat leaves. The flood get worse and the guy ends up on his roof. A guy in a rescue helicopter comes and asks him if he needs help. He says no and that God will save him the helicopter leaves. The flood gets worse and the guy dies. He gets into heaven, goes up to God and asks him why he didn't save him and God says "I sent you a car, a boat, and a helicopter. THE HELLL DO YOU WANT A FLAMING CHARIOT FROM THE SKY!?!
