GoBots Explored - This Brilliant Innovative Cartoon Always Gets Overshadowed By Transformers

Ойын-сауық

The Transformers franchise has thrived throughout the years, both on the small and large screens, thanks to Michael Bay's huge, and occasionally monstrous, live-action adaptations. The toys are once again selling like hotcakes, flying off shelves as swiftly as they did in the 1980s, at the zenith of Transformers popularity. GoBots was essentially the same concept as Transformers, however, it was the first on the market, debuting in 1983, about a year before the Transformers. The initial five-part run that began the GoBots series is called Challenge of the GoBots: The Original Mini-Series. Essentially, the plot is similar to that of the original Transformers miniseries - good GoBots, who are Guardians strive to preserve Earth after some villainous GoBots, also known as the Renegades plot to take over the world. From then, it's all action, with shape-shifting cars, young heroes, and wacky characters. Challenge of the Gobots is available on DVD as one of Warner's Archive Collection on a single-layered DVD5 in full-frame. There are no other features included. According to the packaging, this DVD was restored from the actual film elements rather than being copied from an obsolete tape source. Challenge of the GoBots should bring a smile to the faces of nostalgia geeks with a soft spot for this underappreciated transformation series.

I was really big into Go-Bots as a kid. Then Transformers came along and stole their thunder. Both the Transformer toys and the animated series are far more dynamic than Go-Bots. I do still have many fond memories of playing with my Go-Bots figures. My favorite toy was Zod.

Half surprised Michael Bay didn't try "reinventing" the Go-Bots in his "signature style". Maybe he'd have them turn the humans into cyborgs with Cybertronian tech from a sliver of Allspark. Maybe have Starscream be the main antagonist because F-15 battle. It would end up being nothing like Go-Bots, while calling itself Go-Bots.

So far, the closest we’ve had to a Gobot toy revival are the figures produced and released by Korean toy company (I think it’s Korean) Action Toys. Action Toys acquired the rights to produce figures based on the anime series Machine Robo; Revenge of Cronos. More than ten characters that appeared in Gobots have been released, but since then, despite further figures announced. Action Toys have not made any further releases. One figure they released was a deluxe Bike Robo. This came with swap-out face plates based on Cy-Kil’s actual face so you could create an actual MP Cy-Kil. It even came with swap out hands with moulded energy bolts to mimic Cy-Kil’s energy blasts.

Transformers loved to cram lots of laser gun battles and other conflicts down our throat and GoBots had its battles between the 2 warring factions too but it ALSO had some VERY interesting story lines. Some even included elements of the paranormal and spiritual and one of them even had a "mirror universe" a lot like the "Mirror Mirror" episode of Star Trek where every hero in the regular story was a villain and vice versa. It felt more like the cartoons I'd grown up with and was on my list for shows I never missed (though I can't recall them being Saturday mornings; weekly like He-Man and GI Joe?) But every episode I tried to catch. Transformers is no doubt more iconic, but I never watched more than 2 or 3 episodes all the way through and think none after the 1st season. I think they're a worthy fixture of the Hanna-Barbera universe. (Now if only they'd tried to save it by doing some big crossover special with other H-B characters. Frankenstein Jr, sounds like a natural? Cy-Kill and Uglor team-up? Super Powers Darkseid or Brainiac setting his eyes on Gobatron?).

It wasn't that they were better made. The smaller ones were very detailed and some of them had very interesting transformations and looked cool in both vehicle form and robot form but, standard sized Go-Bots mainly had no elbow articulation just as some had no knee articulation. Some Super Gobots had more articulation and were usually a bit larger than 1:43 scale but, unfortunately some of those could not hold a blaster gun. Transformers on the other hand were roughly 1:43 scale for regular Autobots and usually had more articulation and interesting ideas for what parts of the vehicles became body parts in robot mode. They just seemed more mature in some way. The small Transformers were usually all plastic and cute and cartoonish but, with limited articulation. Decepticon jets were on a smaller scale than most Autobots and there was a lot left to imagination when it came to the sizes of alt modes which the Transformers cartoon demonstrated. Some of this was also true of Go-Bots. Both toylines and shows were great but, Transformers seemed to be directed at a slightly older audience and shows and toys of things like that usually sale pretty well. I still like both Go-Bots, Transformers, Starriors, Zoids, Voltron, Robo-Tech and generally any kind of robots with personality and cool features. Lack of articulation really can be frustrating though.

And this is exactly why Transformers outlasted Gobots: they were marketed as better product than they actually were. The PERCEPTION that persists today was that they were inherently better, because they were more expensive, but the reality is that the first years of Transformers figures were full of tiny parts that got lost easily. And very few of them looked like their cartoon versions. (Looking at you, Ironhide and Ratchet!) I won't say that Gobots were superior to Transformers, but they were at least as good, with a lot more variety in their short run. Yes, Transformers won the war, but it doesn't mean Gobot fans were on the wrong side.

A plot device to bring the 2 groups together could be something similar to how the comic books of DC and Marvel would have their crossovers, with some kind of a dimensional rift or portal temporarily linking the 2 universes. In the UK, the line was called Robo Machine, and imported the original Bandai toys instead of Tonka’s. Yet, the figures did use the Tonka branded names. To promote the toy line, a comic book series was commissioned and published in the Eagle annual comic series. This comic had its own story separate from the tv series, yet similar in plot. Instead of Gobots, they are called Robo Machines, and come from the planet Robotron; a metallic world consisting of robotic and cyborg beings. The comic was a little more darker and violent with both human and Gobots casualties. For instance, Cy-Kil uses a disintegrated ray on a policeman that sees the guy melt away. After two story arcs, the comic was axed, probably due to the tv show about to debut. And ended on an unresolved climax where the Guardians, after suffering losses at the hands of the Renegades are forced to withdraw from Earth, leaving the planet in their control.

That toy would eventually become GunRobo (known outside of Japan as the Megatron toy). Hasbro made a deal with Takara to bring the Japanese toys they were working on together to the USA in 1981. Tonka heard about the deal and got with Bandai in 1982 to bring Bandai's transforming Machine Robo toy line to the USA in 1983. They rushed the toy line and show to market and beat Hasbro by less than a year. Didn't matter though. Hasbro had the superior marketing, figures and reception. I'm still in disbelief that the Gobots never had a chance to air on Cartoon Network back in the 90s. They had so many other Hana Barbara shows from Centurians to Smurfs, even older cartoons like Yogie Bear & Flintstones. But they never even tried to get The Gobots on there, not even for the Super Chunk weekend special. I loved watching Gobots as a kid, it was to me the bets series over the Transformers. I LOVE the characters, especially Crasher for her bad ass aggressive attitude and abilities. Even the writing and characters had some unique qualities compared to the Transformers. I mean, look at the 5 part mini series that started: Cy-Kill conquered Earth in little over 3 days, Megatron never came that close. Once more, Cy-Kill enslaves humanity with mind control, using them as a labor force to amass the Zods too invade Gobotron. Then leaves Earth with a bomb that'll crack it in half, erasing all traces of his ever being there. Now that's a villain you never see from any other 80s line, Thundercats, Transformers, you name it. I doubt any cartoon villain of the 80s can hold a candle to that level.

    There was a Go-Bots cartoon around 2013.

I liked this show as a kid, but there was just something different about the transformers. I think it was the faces of these characters, it was hard to imagine many of them could be real robots. They didn't look as cool to my kid brain, I guess.

Leader-1 was later name-jacked by at least Transformers Armada as a Minicon... And in one of the later comics some years back in the "Smelting pool" one can see what may look like the fists of both Cykill and Leader-1 in the pool... Plus Transformers was rather late introducing female cybertronians and then only Autobot such (As far as I know) with Arcee becoming a permanent character from at least the 1986 movie and onward. 26:58 And that explains THAT!

Hasbro acquired Tonka in '91 and has owned any Gobots names and trademarks they kept active since. The original toys and designs are still owned by Bandai.

@@qmtablit Thanks for the info. Almost likie the owners of Robotech (That also threw a major bitchfit against the owners of Battletech over some mech design...). But Gobots as a franchise has been "lost to the ages" so to speak...

Seems like that's why I didn't purchase the Transformer that came with that minicon. Hang on. Let me check... Okay. Yeah... Seems like during the Armada toyline, I was cruising the Transformers section of Walmart one day and got a little excited to see that they had Megatron and even though I didn't care too much for his robot mode, I did like the tank mode but,... when I saw that his minicon was Leader-1 I immediatley got pissed off and refused to buy that toy! I then and now still have good childhood memories of Leader-1 as he was one of my childhood heroes. I could have accepted him paired up with an Autobot but, to me Hasbro was just being deliberately insulting and seems like now that I'm sitting here, typing this out I actually stood there in the store for a moment, contemplating not buying Transformers anymore. It was hard to let go of how I felt about that but, I did later go on to pick up a few Armada toys. I know I atleast have Armada Thundercracker but, only because I missed out on the G1 Re-issue of him. To me most of Armada looked like oversized, chunky kiddy toys. Atleast the original Leader-1 Go-Bot and cartoon character had class and realistic details given it's size. Armada reminded me too much of Fisher Price toddler toys though.

@@user-sy3nd8yz9j Indeed. I think a friend of mine may have had the Go-Bot Leader-1 toy but I cannot say for sure as this was decades ago (MANY decades). I allways thought the Armada toys looked like they were made of softer plastics and looked as if they could break easily. Character wise I know of at least one G1 Decepticon a Constructicon became an Autobot in Armada and Wheeljack WAS an Autobot but in the cartoon had switched sides to the Decepticons. Sadly I never had any of the original toyline (Diaclone) characters among whom Optimus Prime and especially Megatron was so rare they were nigh nonexistent. I got a much later version of Prime though but that was the Powermaster version...

@@Fenris77 , yeah... ol' g1 prime was cool and not easy to obtain. I have the Universe Classics version which is G1ish in appearance but, with more articulation. I also have Cybertron Leader Class Optimus Prime and the RID 2001 version as well. I didn't like that whole switching sides thing either and was also upset that they did that with Wheeljack. I had a VERY loose-jointed G1 Wheeljack as a kid that came from a second hand store and he became one of my absolute favorite Transformers. When I got the Cybertron version of Downshift, I thought he was supposed to be Wheeljack because of his head shape and that was part of the reason that I bought him. Come to find out all these years later that this Cybetron figure actually is supposed to be Downshift so, I still have no Wheeljack but, I have thought about doing a mod from a bot with a similar configuration.
