Kathy was just a guitar player when they hired her to replace Margo Olavarria, who didn't want to conform to the band's new pop image. Kathy learned how to play Bass while on cocaine it turns out.

@@akbarlebowitz8151 And Charlotte Caffey was originally a bass player who picked guitar. She had to switch to keyboards occasionally for awhile because of a bad problem with carpal tunnel syndrome. She just couldn't play a full set on lead guitar night after night.

The good old days when a band had to play live and couldn’t fake having talent. This sounds like Mozart compared to what we have today.

Kathy Valentine and Gina Schock rock n roll's most overlooked rhythm section, they both play their asses off, and kathy was one of the reason i started playin bass, total bad ass

I love that Belinda has a skirt and heels on and is dancing around that stage having a blast.

congratulations ladies finally nominated rnr hall of fame, they are underrated and the dynamics live is out of the park to say the least. Kathy and Gina drive the riffs and hooks fantastic,just love Gina,s double handed cymbal crashes best wishes from old rocker

Thank God for Mr. Thomas Edison (and his loving mother), the little deaf boy who did not do well in school. Otherwise, none of us would have ever heard any RECORDED music that could be played back. When he did that, it was the first time in 6 billion years of world history that it had ever been possible.

Feels like Charlotte used a different piano sound for this performance.

2020 and the Go Go's is still good to listen to for an hour or two during the covid lockdown

I think Belinda sounds a little ragged here. Admittedly, they were likely in the middle of a tour, but some of it is likely due to BC partying way too hard. (She admits this herself, in her memoir.)

Very cool and they actually sing and play instead of all the artists today who just lip sync

They were all underrated. Not to mention, they're live talent was AMAZING. Unlike today's world where soooo much is faked.

Saw them at the Carowinds Palladium outside Charlotte the year I graduated high school. Had a BIG crush on Belinda. They are still in very regular rotation in my tunes. Would LOVE to see them again. That would be a trip!

All these ladies very talented and smoking hot!

This is great sound , good share compared to the other shares of this performance and hoh

Very true, my friend! Take a look at their Central Park performances of around 2001; I promise you will not regret it. If anything they were even a bit more polished then, but the added years of experience. (Plus the highs and lows of several breakups and reformations.)

All their albums are great, and their first 3 in particular .. Nothing can touch "Beauty and the Beat" for sheer excellence ( every song's a winner ), but like "Vacation", "Talk Show" was also a very good album, with plenty of great songs on it.

Belinda playing that synthesizer was management's idea because they knew they were gonna package Belinda as a solo act and they wanted to see her range as a musician. Which she is a singer, not a musician. And she'll tell you that herself

She was a drummer in the Germs.

I only wish, as of 1984, the mix down engineers at NBC's "The Tonight Show" were more experienced with "live pop band music mixing" and using proper outboard effects units. Even though the gals were all right on pitch is seems, on "Head Over Heals", much, much more compression, limitation and a fast quick plate reverb sound was HEAVILY needed on Charlotte's keyboards. A stereo chorus effect could also been used on Belinda's lead vocal on that Shure SM-58 she had in her hand. But then again, if one is not a multi-track, live, sound reinforcement mixdown engineer...who really cares, huh? BCRadio ======= Radio Broadcaster, Audio & Sound Designer, Analog & Digital Mixing. 1979-2019 (retired)

Jane had basically already quit the band, but had to promotion and concerts before she could leave.

And Kathy just runs to Gina for protection from the "bad girls"

They were a good little band. I liked a few of their songs.

Remember... This was right after the buildup over royalties exploded. Jane wrote most of this album. But since Charlotte was making so much more because of the hits off their debut, Gina and the star Belinda were making the least....they tried to demand Jane to split the royalties. She said next album, they said now, she said fuck off and was quitting after the contractual upcoming tour. Which this performance kicked off. Watch their live clips and videos from '80-'84. And now this. Jane is so pissed here. Charlotte probably shot up beforehand, you can barely hear the guitar, that she's barely playing. And Belinda can see them all like, oh shit maybe I shouldn't have told Jane she wasn't good enough to sing on forget that day, which Jane wrote and was mega personal. So sad, because they rocked.

Jane (along with Charlotte) was always the creative duo on most of the first two albums (with specific pieces contributed by Kathy that she brought with her from the Textones). When one looks at the change in credits on Talk Show, it is obvious that Charlotte dove into heroin addiction, it was Kathy who stepped up to fill part of Charlotte's place working with Jane. But Jane had every right to be pissed. She had worked hard on Beauty and the Beat, and gotten the lion share (with Charlotte) of the royalties. With Vacation, everyone was given a chance to participate and this is where you start seeing credits being given to Belinda and Gina for the first time really. But the decision to "split the royalties equally" with Talk Show (when Jane had been the one constant producer of good material) and the insult about not being allowed to sing lead on "Forget That Day" was rightly so a slap in the face. Kathy just wanted to be a rockstar and the fact that the best know singles from Vacation ("Vacation") and Talk Show ("Head Over Heels ") were both pieces that she and Charlotte had crafted (or updated in the case of "Vacation") with little involvement of Jane (there is no animosity in that regard as Jane has said that "Head Over Heels" is her favorite Go-Go's song). There are quite a number of criminally underappreciated tracks on Talk Show ("Mercenary ", "Under The Blue Sky", etc.) which is a shame because the band's implosion hurt what could have been a gold mine IMO. My favor live perform set is probably the Rockpalast German television set from November 1982 which includes almost all of Beauty and the Beat and Vacation, the drugs are not dragging folks down yet, and egos and hurt feelings had not caused their damage yet

Carlise's voice was shot, obviously.

ugh to yes or no. that was a downer after a great performance of head over heels! no hook, slow lifeless beat, really bad lyrics, belinda looked like she wanted to be *ANYWHERE* but there... they never shouldve released this let alone performed it. but HOH was great!
