GNS Part V Instrument Approaches

In this fifth episode of our Reintroduction to the Garmin GNS430 and 530 navigators, Mike takes a deep dive into what it takes to use these navigators to execute Instrument Approach Procedures. We'll take a quick look at the different types of GPS Approaches and their minimums; look at how to select an airport and the desired approach and transition; how to quickly select another airport; whether, when, and how to activate an approach or a leg onto the approach; how to verify the navigator is in the correct mode to perform the approach; and much, much more.
Captain Mike Jesch flies a Boeing 787 on long-haul routes at work - with perhaps the most modern aviation navigation system available today. With deep roots in the GA world, he is a two-time Master CFI and has been flying for over 40 years. He earned his instrument rating in a Cessna 150 with vacuum tube radios, but he's flown behind a GNS530W in his personal Cessna 182 for a decade now and will bring his engaging and relaxed presentation style home to you.
Join host Captain Brian Schiff and presenter Captain Mike Jesch for this re-introduction to the wonders of modern GPS navigators. Using the Garmin simulator as well as photos and videos from his own airplane, we will illustrate, demonstrate, and educate on the basics.

Thank You for all that great info on the GNS 430 and 530 Mike. It's a great box and that is all most of us can afford, I just installed one in my Good Old Lady and I'm pretty happy with it. I got my private at Fullerton Airport at AFI. Now my home Airport is Raleigh Regional at Person county in North Carolina.

I think for this approach, you have to wait until you are inbound to PDZ in the hold. Once established, you can either activate the leg PDZ-RWY 25 or I believe while you are in the hold, it is in Suspend mode and you just unsuspend it( not 100% sure about that). Or I think you can delete hold in the flightplan. I'll check it out on sim at home. Great series.

Hi Mark! Thanks for those kind words. I finally got a chance to play with the sim a bit more, although not the airplane yet, and here's what I've found. In the case of the GPS A approach to KAJO, I was in some random location and loaded the approach (I had to activate it as well, since there wasn't anything else in the flight plan, that was the only option it gave me). It flew me to PDZ and did one turn in the hold, and then proceeded inbound. The only way to make it do multiple turns in the holding pattern before the approach is to press the OBS button to suspend waypoint sequencing (SUSP is then annunciated above the OBS button) and stay in the hold before arriving at PDZ. In this case, it'll keep on going round and round until the gas runs out! Once I pressed the SUSP, it annunciates the approach mode and goes inbound on the approach. Upon arriving at the MAP, SUSP becomes active once again and, in order to navigate and sequence the missed approach, I have to press OBS again. This time, upon arriving at PDZ for the missed approach hold (and with nothing else in the flight plan), it entered the hold and SUSP was annunciated and it stays there until the cows come home. In any case, I recommend checking the Suspend status when approaching the holding waypoint to verify it's what you want - if you want to stay, make sure SUSP is annunciated, and if you want to proceed, make sure it isn't!

Mike, great content, as usual, thank you very much. I always learn something new from your videos. Is there a way to make the FF charts a little less blurry in the video? The minima, for example, are hard to decipher. It is not a big problem because we always have the option of following you on our own plates. Keep up the good work!

I'm afraid it's kind of out of my control, unfortunately... I recorded it and processed it in HD. I just checked it on my laptop computer while I'm out of town, and it's a bit blurry on my laptop screen, but when I put it up on the TV with decent resolution through an HDMI cable, it's way better. I'll try to come up with a better way to show these details next time, so thanks for the report.

Hello! Have you found a solution for LPV approaches with Reality XP? If so, could you please inform us so that we can address it? Thank you !

Thanks for your informative videos! I’m trying to use my 430w for learning instrument approaches and when there is a published hold on the inbound portion, like at the faf, it doesn’t show up in the flight plan and I can’t fly it. The missed hood is there but not be on the inbound course. A menu item maybe?

Hi Stuart! Glad you're enjoying the series... Thanks! If you could send me an email at CapnMikeGPS@gmail.com with the specifics of the approach you're looking at, I'd be willing to see if I can figure out what's going on. I've been pointed to a couple others that sound like they might be a similar situation to yours, but I want to make sure I'm looking at exactly the right thing. Probably a future episode will review some of these oddball examples with some suggestions on working through it.

Mike, does the G530W/430W have a button to keep the DME distance of the secondary NAV frequency when you switch to an ILS? Kind of like the old KNS80. Or, do you have to switch back and forth, or have a second DME?

  • @CapnMikeCFI

No, I don't know of a way to easily do that. Once you select a LOC frequency in the active Nav receiver frequency, you will no longer get distance or bearing from that station. One trick I've used, though it's only temporary, is to select the Nearest chapter (big right knob all the way right, then select the VOR page - page 4 - then you can see each nearby VOR and your bearing and distance from it. The one you're interested may not be the one at the top of the list, and it may move position in the list as you fly along, because the list is organized with the nearest one first, etc., but, it may be close enough for what you're interested in. A separate DME receive would certainly work.

@@CapnMikeCFI Bummer. I don't actually own a Garmin unit yet. Still thinking about a new GTN series. I'm not comfortable buying the old 530/430s. Right now, I have the old KNS80, and that is one feature about it I really like about it! But, ILSs, LOCs, V0Rs, and NDBs, will probably be a thing of the past very soon.

  • @CapnMikeCFI

@@azcharlie2009 I'd think hard about a GTN unit myself... The GNSes are no longer manufactured, and at some point Garmin will probably sunset the hardware support as well, as eventually components will simply cease to exist to be able to maintain them. The GNSes have a lot more capability (Airways, arbitrary holds, visual approach advisory guidance, among many other features), and are current generation. NDBs are already being deactivated, as are a lot of VORs. ILSes will be around for a while, but RNAV approaches are the way of the future, and DME is essentially unnecessary for those. Even marker beacons are being removed, so some ILS approaches require DME to establish the location of the FAF - what we used to call the 'outer marker' - but that can be substituted with an IFR GPS too. We've had our GNS530W in our 182 for over a decade now, and may move to a GTN750 or maybe an IFD540 when we do some more panel work soon (hopefully getting rid of our vacuum-powered steam gauges and getting an autopilot that functions better than a doorstop!).

I finally had to stop watching these on the fifth one. 75 percent of the viewers use the 430 yet the 430 simulator was shut down within the first 10 minutes or so and the 530 was started up and was used for the vast majority. This has happened in all the videos i've watched up through the fifth one. Sorry just cant take it anymore

All of the features I describe for the GNS530W also work for the 430W. There are just a couple things that are slightly different: Nav page 1 is very different between the two units, and the VNAV page is in a menu on the 430 versus using a button on the 530. There are a few other fairly minor differences, and I point those out when they come up. I mostly use the 530 simply because the screen is a little bigger, and therefore the menus are larger and easier to see and move around on.
