One of the most terrifying bits of footage I've ever seen was from some disabled old guy who was, well, too disabled to get anywhere safe before a tornado hit his home, so he just filmed it until impact. Just unbelievable footage to watch. The sound is just hellish. It destroyed the house; basically hitting it directly, and by some miracle, I believe he survived, but his wife, who'd managed to get to their shelter, was actually killed. I'm sure a lot of people know the clip I'm talking about. I hope I got the details right.

For anyone that grabs this map, the doors and buttons have labels but it seems they can't be seen in VR. Also, that said, this map can tank performance depending on your computer. The map's creator does do little optimizations from time to time but there's only so much you can do with Source maps.

It's an interesting story when I also have a cousin who was a Tim Burton movie and Pixar animator we've had fun stories to exchange lol

I use to be a huge storm chaser in Gmod back in 2016 and am familiar with these types of maps. At 8:12 you can hear the sound of the tornado coming close and Liberian was oblivious to how close he was to it. Also in multiplayer, most of the time people would be chasing the tornado like an RP. We would try to get in front of it and even go inside them. It’s crazy from a first person POV when the tornado is carrying a lot of debris

You're just like me when you were standing half in the shelter watching it come towards you. Every time it storms where I am, even when tornados have a very high chance of touching down, I'm the idiot amateur that's outside filming lightning strikes and seeing which clouds could form spinning danger air. A dream of mine when I was younger was to be a meteorologist nurse chasing storms in the Midwest. I wanted to gather storm data one minute and the next minute be helping people that got caught in the storm. Half of that dream came true. I was a nurse for a while, but there weren't any good meteorology programs/courses near me, (and I suck at math) so now I just chase storms in my area. (Also, the Maximum Overdrive comment had me rolling. I grew up around my grandparents semi mechanic shop and I was fairly young when I first watched that movie, so I had that constant thought that one of the cabs my grandpa was fixing was just going to start chasing me.)

tornadoes are incredibly scary in person, but also fantasizing. i live in ohio, right on the lake, so we see tornadoes and water spouts occasionally. a long time ago at this house i used to live at a really bad storm rolled in and a tornado touched down and pulled the roof of my house off. luckily we had a pretty safe basement. it was pretty terrifying, and that emergency broadcast siren only added to the scare factor. i’ve also been in the lake with a few friends while a couple of water spouts swirled some hundred feet from us, that was pretty awesome to watch.

you made a comment on the safest place to be during a tornado being under a bridge- my special interest is tornadoes and underpasses and bridges are the WORST places to be. Swegle Studios has a video explaining why those are deathtraps! but aside from that, I am astounded at how realistic this is for a Gmod map- the different types of tornadoes, the debris, the dirt cloud at the bottom, it's honestly amazing what people can do!

You should try more Storm Chasing themed maps in the future! I love this type of content,Librarian. P.S,you say that first tornado was big? They are HUGE in real life, that was a EF3 tornado, severe damage is done by these, they move at around 300-400+ MPH,also you said you don't know how to tell if it is getting closer, you can tell if the tornado is getting closer if you see it not move in real life,or it could in fact either die or stop. Fun fact,if you are very lucky to be in a empty tornado,it is VERY COLD inside of there,if you don't die from stuff hitting you,you will die from hypothermia. Edit, the second tornado was an EF0,your common tornado, minor damage, only peels pieces of some roofs.

The tornadoes shown in this map are actually the small ones. There are even smaller ones we call dust devils which are weak enough that people sometimes run into them for kicks. Larger tornadoes are measured in fractions of miles wide. In the county where I live we have had multiple tornadoes, including one that flattened a large portion of the large city in the area. My parents remember the day the entire sky went black as night mid day. "Terrible Tuesday" they called it. My only direct experience being outside during a tornado event happened while I was on a high school trip to Omaha, Nebraska. I got separated from our group on the University campus, and was making my way to our dorm in the rain. The sky was deep grey, but the clouds pulled away like a curtain revealing a sick dark green color I have never seen anytime else. The tornado passed directly over the city to touchdown in a pasture and causing only moderate damage to some property, and I assume livestock. I sheltered in a parking garage for the worst of it, though I still got soaked. When I got to the dorm, which took a while because the maps they gave us were terrible I slept for 16 hours, partly due to my ordeal, but also some other issues I was having at the time. So, in my area there are no laws requiring basements, but every employer has to have some kind of storm shelter. I am unaware of the standards that these have to meet, but they are usually windowless rooms on the interior of the building. When I have worked in hospitals and food service, the shelters are often walk-in fridges and freezers, or if there is a basement, the basement. Many houses including my childhood home will have a closet or bathroom that is not touching an exterior wall for this reason. In my current house I would probably be going into one of my closets. All of the main bedrooms have a closet facing the interior, which I am grateful for. It is not uncommon to see houses with storm shelters in their backyards, and the local home improvement stores often sell storm shelter solutions throughout the year. My least favorite remind me of the Prowalski preservation shelters from Fallout. Though these would actually protect you form the storm. One of the lesser known dangers of tornadoes is that they suck all the air out of buildings, and even your lungs. People who've been caught in them holding onto fenceposts, support beams, trees et cetera often loose consciousness due to oxygen deprivation. It is terrifying, but thankfully tornadoes have been rare in my locale recently. "Tornado Alley" seems to have shifted north of us.

I would advise that bridges/underpasses are not safe places to shelter from tornados. They may seem like a good place but people have died doing this. The danger is from debris traveling under the bridge at high speeds and impacting the people taking shelter there. As for the map, really cool. The NWS building is a nice touch. As someone who grew up and lives in central OK, I can relate to watching from the shelter up to the last moment. I often heard growing up that tornados often sounded like a loud waterfall or an oncoming train. In my experience, it kind of sounds like both from inside a storm shelter. In the Midwest, most shelters are going to be at residences and most people will gladly let you shelter with them in emergencies. The vast majority of tornados are also survivable if you can get into an interior part of a well built structure, putting as many walls as possible between you and the outside. The larger ones (EF4, EF5) will completely wreck a structure or even scour a building down to its foundation... this is where a shelter is a must.

As a Kansan who has known what to do in case of a tornado their whole life I could only grimace while watching this video. This is why they give information about what to do IN the emergency broadcast. However, it was funny watching you run around not knowing what to do. Also it seems that you also experienced the weird awestruck feeling you get when you see a tornado in person which I think is cool coming from a virtual experience.

Bless your non-midwestern soul getting all panicked about a tornado watch and tornado sirens lol. Very rarely do any of us frantically search for shelter. Most times we're out looking at the storm unless we're actually in the line of the rotation or a tornado already on the ground. Actually seeing the tornado form tho was scary. I have recurring nightmares where I see tornadoes forming and have to run from them, so actually seeing that outside my own dreams is surreal and unnerving.

Storm chaser maps are really, really fun. I used to try and make a build and if I heard a siren, tried to survive in when a twister came.

I remember playing on a map similar to this, may have been back in the gmod 12 days, but it was just a singular road with a few houses around. One was destructable and could be reset, while the other was a storm surveillance shack that couldn't be destroyed. I'm 90% sure the map was for a gamemode called Storm Chasers, where you found storms, and chased them to get footage of it. I doubt the gamemode exists, but it was very fun, even if it was a basic concept.

The EAS tones, are illegal to broadcast over television and radio where EAS equipment is listening in for the tone in order to relay the signal, broadcasting it over KZread on a video with loud ambient sounds isn’t illegal and it’s not going to activate equipment, however that doesn’t mean I’d risk playing the tones near listening equipment luckily the average Joe isn’t going to be able to get close to them to send a false alert out anyways

This is gonna be Awesome Edit: 2:09 Uh please don't take cover under a bridge. Bad idea. Edit 2 5:04 Yeah playing EAS tones near and around weather equipment like weather radios can trigger false EAS Alerts. Edit 3 11:58 If the tornado is still, assume that it is moving towards you. Edit 4 13:18 If that happens you need a tornado thats an EF3 or stronger. Edit 5 14:48 What happened is a power flash. The tornados winds were strong enough it blew the transformers on the power lines. These explosions of energy emit a blue flash of light thus the term power flash. Edit 6 15:31 Doppler radar is op lol. Edit 8 (idk when I'll be done editing. Also edit seven was lost at sea) 25:50 **El Reno flashbacks intensifies**

Edit 7 23:08 Tornados can be deceiving. A good example is the May 31 2013 El Reno Oklahoma tornado. This tornado was the biggest recorded tornado at its peak but in its first minutes the visible funnel deceived chasers on the actual size of the tornado. For example, you may think you are 3 miles away but in reality you are only half a mile away from the outer winds.

on one hand, you do not exhibit the true midwesterner trait of knowing what you're *supposed* to do in a tornado. but you do demonstrate the true midwesterner trait of sitting round watching and waiting for the thing to touch down and actually head your way before doing anything lol

This episode reminds me of the Moore/Norman, Oklahoma Tornado that happened in May of 2013 or 2014. A massive Devastating supercell thunderstorm that quickly developed a single EF4 (Enhanced Fajita scale) with damages up to $20,000,000. Unfortunately it's not the most dangerous, the most dangerous Tornado recorded was the rain-wrapped El Reno tornado that killed three of the most popular and most brilliant storm chasers in recent history.

As someone from Oklahoma, storm shelters are absolutely not required. Basically the only places that have them are residential homes who have paranoid owners and elementary schools, not really a given anywhere else. In fact a common thing people do is just hide in church bathrooms and pray Edit: Some areas do require storm shelters in some cases, but it’s dependent on what county you’re in. Also Oklahoma is never mentioned unless you’re talking about tornadoes lol

being from oklahoma, i can say that this is relatively accurate. i’d also like to say that it is not legally required for a public building to have a basement. usually during an actual tornado, some of the safest places are places with no windows and i don’t know if that’s common sense but that’s what i know

As someone who lives in Oklahoma, tornadoes are some of the scariest things you can experience over here. My house almost got hit by a tornado in spring last year. One time it was just me and my mom at home alone. And while I was playing on my pc, out of nowhere, I get a tornado warning on my phone. While it didn’t touch down yet, it went right over us! That was the first time the power at our house went out during a tornado. Pretty scary stuff.
