Great review, thanks. No vehicle stats or vehicle upgrade rules seem like the biggest downside and “buyer beware” for an expansion literally geared toward fighting outside… with vehicles. At the very least you’d think they could have packed in maybe 8 pages of generic vehicles and some barebones upgrade.

Sounds like typical necromunda rulebook. Full of holes that will be addressed in the next book that introduces new holes.

I find it really troubling that he release a game which has rules that fundermentaly require you to buy more books before it's playable.

Bad form. GW has specifically done this the worst with necromunda they are going to repeat their original launch. Get the fan base hugely excited and sell 6 splat books with one or two small bits in them. Piss off the community game falters and two years later release a new set of books which consolidate and expand the game proper. Theyve done it twice before this is round three.

@@ogreboy8843 I belive the term you are looking for is 'your first hits free but your next level will cost you' it is interesting that while gw and wizards are 'buy all thease books to play our game' The majority of the industry are either here is the complete rule book for free or our games core rule book has everything. I think that is quite telling.

It's niece to see that GW values your hard work to promote their games and names their game after you! Good job, keep going!

"Ash Wastes with crazy weather and in the open" was my fear for this expansion tbh. It's also ridiculous that it's not a complete package, more books incoming...

Just watched your recent vid on Ash Wastes. I'm honestly kind of dumb founded. I just see no real reason to buy this box set. I'm just now getting into Necromunda and GW is kind of shooting themselves in the foot on this one!

@@Grendelnz so you clearly don’t actually watch her content. She does shine light on the negative sides of the hobby. She also talks about the positives…. The fact that there are more negatives than positives isn’t on Discourse, that’s on GW and their business model.

So the take away from this is that Necromunda Ash Wastes box is just an expensive demo of what the game is like. But if you want to really play this you need to buy all the extra books and stuff that have yet to be released.

No doubt! $300 for an already released gang, an incomplete rule book, and some huts. I had such high hopes when this idea was first teased.

Very clear and useful review, really. It's a "wait and see" feeling on my side, me too I was waiting for something more deep in terms of game mechanics and options

I'd have like to seen only vehicles/bikes in this.. More standard fighters (especially repackaged Orlocks) isn't super exciting imo.

Classic necromunda accounts for my best gaming memories. I like the new edition but it feels like they need 2 tries to get everything correct with it. They probably need to slow down, take some breaths and spend more time on each thing.

Can you set a vehicle on fire by using a weapon with the blaze trait? Any info on how , say escher chem throwers would work on them?

Thank you as always for these reviews. I watch even for ones I'm not interested in. Since this chat seems to be a discussion about books, GW seems to want to be more a publishing company than a miniature. For all their complaints about supply chain, books are the most expensive thing to produce. FFG/AMG posting rules free online feels really good.

Like Gangs of the Underhive, there will be something like Gangs of the Wastes with the rules for vehicles for each of the gangs, expanded campaign and hangers on etc. Calling it now.

Very interesting release. So not really enough info to actually play the gangs in the box in normal necromunda but not enough interesting stuff to make the game feel right in the ash wastes. Core problem is that 28-32 mm scale is not the right scale for vehicles to actually do vehicle things.

So glad I watched this and read the conversation -- the minis in box are beautiful, but I'd be new to Necromunda, and this doesn't sounds like the best place to start.

Can I just check with anyone, to play this properly I would need the original rulebook, a future vehicle supplement and at least one gang book for orlocks on top of £180 for this box?

This book serves as the Necromunda core book, you will eventually need a vehicle book and you will want your gang house book. So yes that is 3 books lol. I miss the GW of old....the reason I quit 40k was to many books, seems to be their new way of doing things.

@@concernedearthling3353 And I guarantee you that now there will 100% be either a Gang book V.2 for each gang OR a Gang book 1.5 that just has the vehicle rules for that specific gang that costs the same as the normal Gang book.

The rules for the Nomads and the Orlocks Gangs as well as the Ash Wastes Trading Post SHOULD have been in the book, with the overall vehicle rules added as a PDF. Not having the full gang rules in there doesn't make sense. I guess the plus side is the discount you get on the models.

Love the ash wastes idea. Hoping the book comes out separately. I have no interest in the gangs, making the box pretty expensive and a faff to get rid of stuff. That this will take two books plus whatever gang to play with is a lot of flipping through books!

Hmmm. Lovely looking stuff again, love the terrain and the scary flea things, but like you said, not getting the full Mad Max vibe from this. Maybe with the missing rules added back in at a later date it'll get there, but I don't think this is the game for me - think I'll stick to Gaslands for my vehicular mayhem.

Cheers for the vid! Question, if I wanted to get into Necromunda but was more interested in the Hive battle rather than Waste/Vehicle battles, would you recommend this book over the currently available full rulebook? :)

I don't know enough about it, just watch out. A lot of people are just going to be whiney about the price and not say whether or not this is a good place to start. The models and terrain are worth it if you are into them (I am, so I'm likely going to get this l).

Not a good place to start. Dark Uprising is a good place to start. The smaller version is not great value, but it is a better place to start. On phone so can not go into details, but in short Necromuda is not something you can get into easy. You will start off small, and incomplete no matter what you buy (unless it is Underhive set or Dark Uprising). So first thing. Pick your gang. Can be any reason. Buy the book for gang, buy the gang. Build and paint. Read the book, much of it will not tell you how to play the game, but how to play that gang. It will confuse, and overwhelm. It is complex. If others play in your area, join them, play with them. If possible. If not who will you play with? What gang do they want? Repeat above. If you want more. Then get a starter set, any. But know that it will need more books for it all. You can play years worth of game, with rules, dice, and two gangs (with gang books). The rest is filler. But this set is not a good start. Why? You buy it, and you do not live it, or too complex. It is a lot of money to lose. You will know if like it and if want more, with just one gang book. Plus easy to sell a gang book if hate it.

Not sure. The price is very high but if you like both gangs and all the models then yes. If you don't, fiscally better off grabbing smaller kits and rulebook separately

When I got into Necromunda I didn’t get a box set and just got the rule book and a gang. One obstacle is that the rules use blast and flame templates, and has scatter dice for things like the grenade launcher. This expansion specifically is geared towards a Mad Max road warrior experience, so I would only lean into it if you are more interested in giant insects slugging it out with bikers than the basic experience of hi-tech and low-life.

A few side notes. The basic rules of Necromunda with a single gang is quite complex. Before you even add a single expansion. So to spend money on this box set would be great value in the end. It would be worth while if you already know you want to get into Necromunda. But it will still require many things to be even partly complete. and But it is not required for players new to Necromunda. A rule book is great, as is the Gang book, and one of these costs £20 compared to the £150~ price that this boxset would cost. You can decide and will know just buy the Rule set or Gang book if it is something you want more of. Where if you buy this set (as good as it is), if you decide it is too much, or not what you thought it was, you lose out a lot more. Dice, there is ways around custom dice. Just have a roll chart (make a chart for each dice type) for example. 1-2 = Single 3= Double 4=Skull 5= Unicorn 6= Crit If you need one like scatter dice, either Sharpie or use a spin device. There are ways around the dice and paper templates is a good start item. They are cheap and nasty, and not going to make the game great. But if it is only the "things" that make the game great then you are not liking the game, but the stuff. You can tell if you WANT to get into Necromunda by just reading one gang book. Then deciude how much you want to get into it or not.

I love the concept and rules directing for the vehicle I just don't like the box or how the cut out the rules again. Going to be a pass for me on this one.

thanks for this, i was not super inspired to buy it other than for the terrain (and my backlog is already huge), i dont play orlocks and the nomads, while cool are not for me. this has cemented my decision. while you cost me a lot of money when you show us awesome stuff i did not know i wanted to buy you also help me not buy things. it might balance out over time :)

$299 or so and no hard vehicle rules? Wow. I like the wasteland raider guys, so I'll wait for a separate box, buy them, and just use them in Stargrave, This Is Not A Test, or Space Weirdos. In all honesty, with how expensive most GW stuff is getting you’d think they sell complete games.

I don't have any necromunda. I considered picking this up until hearing that in typical gw fashion not all rules are in the book. And they will be happy to sell you another book later with the rest. Shame because the mite riders look so rad.

Do you think the campaign system and book keeping will be simplified so that the games take longer than the campaign book keeping phase? So far I spent about twice as long doing the out of game stuff than I spend on the table.

Its amazing you can spend $300 on a starter set and it doesn't include all of the rules.

I just want to play Necromunda with my friends...and none of us have any idea what books we need or how much to spend 😩.

As much as I think this set has some nice contents, it's another example of GW holding back new rules for lots more books and it feels like a very 'controlled' release again with one eye on ensuring further high spends. I own a lot of Necromunda stuff (as well as several other GW games including Warcry, Kill Team (2 versions) & Adeptus Titanicus), but the spiralling costs are now getting too silly. In the UK I got Kill Team in 2018 for £75ish delivered and it had 10.5 sprues of plastic within (counting minis as half sprues, terrain as one sprue). When Necromunda Dark Uprising came out in late 2019 I already had MDF underhive walls so I just got the minis and bits I wanted. It was a very expensive box at £175, but it contained 20 sprues of plastic, nearly twice Kill Team 2018. Ash Wastes is £180 (even more outside the UK) and contains 'only' 13 sprues (8 new terrain, 1 barricades sprue and 8 half sprues of minis). I know if you break down the prices of buying things separately (if you even can) you will save a good chunk, but the value of a GW 'big box' is - at least for me, getting hard to justify and I can't help thinking that if I get this box, the land train that is coming and the expected vehicle and Ash Nomads books, well - I'll have really overspent and might just feel some regret. I think I'll wait and see what rules and dice etc. are released over the coming months.....

So this is essentially a disfunctional product? Again? Thank you for this review, together with the insane price this stopped any enthusiasm I had for "Ash Wastes". Hard pass, sadly.

This really sounds like a testing of the waters and feels very premature. I think this will be a hard sell without additional rules (that honestly should have been in the box) and if this doesn't sell well enough, then we have ... speed freaks 2.0. Ugh.

Someone needs to work up orks and GSC rules for this game asap. I don't care if there are no orks on Necromunda.

No trading post...no gang rules.....no in depth vehicle rules....What is the actual point in this release? Other than as a tool to sell vehicles and new terrain at a HUGELY inflated price? Hard pass for me.

So $300 for what boils down to a hard cover Quick-Start with a hand full of minis (with some reprints) and terain? Who would be happy with this? Is game workshop not aware they have competition?

Would have thought it would be a no brainer to include rules for the genestealer cult vehicles. They could have then released upgrade packs for each gang to convert them. Maybe goliaths could have used ork vehicles too

You're not exactly inspiring me to buy this. Not really feeling the over priced half books/ sloppy writing that GW has become known for.

there is a bigger plan behind. the need time to repackage some stuff. just get the jackal box before it will be breaked down to smaller more expensive boxes.

Not buying. Not only does it need more books it seems, the board quality is crap, the book is black and white cheap print… no. Just no.

I don’t feel this was an actual review. Just seemed to an uncritical page-through with no overall conclusion or opinion of its worth or value. Guessing Ash signed GW’s infamous NDA.

I haven’t signed anything new. I don’t know price points on anything when it’s sent to me so I can’t really comment on values as I honestly don’t know what they’re charging. I’m pretty critical in this one that I’m bummed there’s not much here for playing with existing gangs and that for a vehicle supplement it feels like the vehicles don’t get a lot of airtime. I’m not sure what else I’d comment on tbh. It’s still Necromunda which I love. It just feels like for a box featuring cars… the spotlight should have been on the cars so you can skip it and wait for that book if you don’t want the gangs featured here!

Like it wasn’t an authentic review. Like you were being very careful about what you were saying. Doing your best to frame something you weren’t impressed with in a positive light. It didn’t feel like a review from someone who had spent their own money on the product. Maybe a preface to the review stating your relationship (if any) with the manufacturer. I definitely remember you doing that plenty of times before in other reviews. I’m sure GW are a difficult balancing act. Just did not sound independent this time. Peace.
