GMG Jim Bowie Prime vs Original

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Not 100% thorough, however I had both my JB's sitting in the garage on a snowy day in Omaha and thought I'd show them side by side, along with the original cook video I did earlier this week.
Overall, here are my first impressions, which I posted on the GMG Owners Facebook page:
My first impressions (very limited use so far, assembled and fired up last night)
- Built like a TANK!
- Wheels and legs, etc are so much better
- Love the heat shield handle
- Love the vacuum hole idea, but have yet to test how well it works
- Love the extra shelving, already came in handy
- WiFi is lightning fast and the controller + app work perfectly together.
- Love the controller overall, now that it essentially matches the DC
- Love the 12V option
- Window in the lid is handier than I thought it would be.
- Pizza Oven still fits!!!!
Other thoughts:
- It’s loud, like the DC, due to being 12V. I'll take 12V over quiet, but it is loud. This is because 12V motors aren't as quiet.
- I don’t like that the front shelf doesn’t fold down, it seems like that could have been an easy thing to do out of the gate. I expect lots of complaints about it.
- The vacuum hole I can't decide on yet. It appears to get quite a bit of ash out of the fire pot just fine, but you still do need to clean out the rest of the pit with a vacuum. I think I would have rather seen an opening / dump that you could just push all the ash too, let it fall out the bottom.
Regarding: Is it worth the extra money?
In my very honest opinion, worth every penny. It will last longer just due to being more solid and sturdy and there is just so much more to love. Don’t get me wrong, anyone who knows me knows I’m a pizza nut and I wouldn’t sacrifice the pizza attachment if you are forced to make a choice between getting it with the original and the Prime...but it’s a small additional investment compared to the total. I really do think you will kick yourself someday....but that’s just me. Some of the add ons are vanity add ons (bottle opener?), but overall it’s about $100 investment difference and I whole heartedly believe you get much more than $100 of additional value and buying the Prime is worth it.
Let me know if you have questions! I'll be cooking on it often and learning as I go.

I have an original JB and bought instead of the Prime for these reasons. 1) I got a huge discount from my local guy. The cook process is the same. 2) I don’t rely on the internal food probe. I use an external like ThermaPro. 3) a folding shelf is available for the older model and it’s great. 4) I installed my own heat shield slider for about $3.00 in parts. Now I like a lot of the features and especially the heavier legs and bottom shelf but the deep discount won out. Now I have a PK and a Weber 310 for steaks and burgers, my Pit Barrel Cooker is a rib machine and the JB handles pretty much everything else. I own an Ooni Fyra pellet version for pizza and honestly the JB with the pizza attachment is easier and does an outstanding job on home made crust in about 2 minutes. Nice review.

Thanks for watching!!! For the battery, it really depends on what battery you are using. I have a battery backup / jumper battery and I used it for a 8 hour cook and it said it had 25% battery remaining. I don’t really trust those gauges, so tough to say. For the Grill Grates - the best bet is to message Grill Grates and confirm. They make the specific for the GMGs

Some of the upgrades are nice...some are questionable. changing it to 12v for mobility seems neat till you try to pick the dang thing up, I'd imagine that was a cost saving move so they don't have to keep 12v and 120v controllers stocked. The beefier legs were a step in the right direction for sure. The front shelf kills a bit of the mobility too say if you were going to tailgate with it. Still love my original Daniel Boone, cool tip if you didn't opt for the wifi model originally it's probable you actually do have the wifi board and need to add a $5 antenna and drill a hole, that's what I did. I do hope they upgrade their phone software. It'd be nice to get an alert on the phone when your set food temp is reached. Thanks for the comparison!

I have put mine through some very tough conditions, weather wise and traveling. I’ve had some rust after scratching it and so forth, but nothing that is the GMG Ms fault. • @MattFrampton

    @MattFrampton

Hi! So, actually the motor quiets down after the initial warm up and when it’s not so brutally cold out! The biggest advantage of the 12v if you can easily run the grill off of a battery backup or marine battery. This is awesome for tailgates and other places you may want to run the grill, without power in the area.

Just bought one but the linkage on auger broke (auger motor connecting to the auger) and my idea why this would happen is that the original jim bowie has the fire pot more to the left and the prime has it on center having about 5 inches where it is only a tube so auger works but for those last 5 inches air blowing thru there should push it but i didn’t like that also i took auger out and rolled it on table and saw that the spiral end was off about a 1/6” and looks like tube where this is going thru there should be 1/8” of play idk i was really dissapointed and i don’t care if i have to buy a part to give it a chance but it shouldn’t get jammed with pellets brand new are this grills getting some kind of final test or are they expecting to have customers first find out

Very sorry to hear!!! I’m sure they will take care of you, no cost. GMG customer service is stellar. As for the JB fire pot location, the original had it off center and to the left a couple of years, but that was changed several years ago. The firepot has been in the center for quite a while, before the Primes.

Hi there! Huge Grill Grate fan here, use them on everything I own. They regulate temps better, they give an awesome sear, upside down they make a flat top. They come in panels so you can use them on only half the grill. Made of cast aluminum so they will never rust and never need to be replaced. They maintain higher temps for grilling. These, along with ten ThermaPen, are the best two grilling inventions ever, in my opinion.

Run it before returning it. You’d don’t actually have to put food on it, yet. Let it come all the way up to temp and hit a maintenance mode. It’s a 12v motor, so it’s got some whine to it, but once you reach temps it doesn’t make near the same amount of noise.
