Great video. It gave me confidence to do the job on my SRX. I was able to take the nut (11 mm) out without jacking the car up by going in from the drivers side just in front of the tire. The fill was 4 1/2 qts. It was easy! Saved $100 by staying away from the stealer. Thanks. Looking forward to draining it again in a couple hundred miles.

also on the fill procedure is heat engine up to normal operating temp. run through all gears then check level while engine is running unlike oil engine needs to be running.

Nice Video. The Transmission Service interval for my 2012 Terrain V6 SLT AWD is 97,500 miles according to the owners manual. Even thought it has a dip stick like the one in your video the owners manual states its not necessary to check the transmission oil unless there is a leak and it does not give the procedure to check it. Technically yes, but it's not like the older cars. Both fluid that has come out and fluid going in has to be the same temperature when being measured. Even just a bit of difference can lead to a variation in how much fluid goes in. And the transmissions on many cars these days are very specific. Also, I have seen cars come from the factory that were either underfilled (saw this on a Mazda) and overfilled (saw this on a Ford). It happens. So putting in the same volume doesn't always work (although those above scenarios are rarer). The fill bolt is the safest bet, but as long as you are cautious with what comes out and goes in, you can do it that way too.

There is a filter, but it is not meant to be changed. I don't believe it is easy to get to. You would only need to do a drain and fill, similar to what is seen in this video

Nice video ,the only thing I would do different is take the engine cover off, one bolt and tsar oil filler cap off engine pop off cover to get at transmission fill cap .then you will have plenty of room

I have not personally, but GM had made changes to these over the entire generation. So I wouldn't be surprised if there was a change made at some point.

When you recheck your trans fluid level does the engine need to be running ? The older cars with a lot easier dipstick to get to, the engine needed to be warm and running. Thanks

There is a filter, but it is very hard to get to. Definitely not something for the regular DIY'er to get to, unfortunately. GM states it is a lifetime filter, but I would have still preferred to change it. But you would essentially need to take apart the transmission or remove it entirely to get to it. This video would be the best way to prolong the life of your transmission. Glad the video info was helpful too.

Unfortunately, I did not, and I don't think I will. I am with you that filters should be changed, but there is no easy way to get to the filter. In watching the video, when I open the drain plug, you will notice there is no actual transmission pan. That is the issue. In order to get to the filter, you have to actually completely open and 'split' the transmission. GM says that it is a 'lifetime' filter. I believe there is no such thing, just that it will last the expected life of the vehicle. However, there is no easy way to get to it.

Thanks! No need to put any old fluid in. The drain and fill does not take out all the old fluid from the transmission, so no need to add any old fluid. Put in only new fluid

As it gets older, it should get a little thicker. But I found its not like gear oil...the viscosity is closer to 10w30 engine oil, off the top of my head. So don't expect a super thick oil

What happens when you disconnect your neg. battery terminal for a spell? Does it just affect the clock ? I need to know for seat repairs.

Depending on the MY, there is some memory retainment. But I do not know how long the clock will last. I have disconnected the battery for about 20 mins in the past and it retained the clock and stereo features. It was a 2015 MY. I am not sure if that is the same for all years, and how long it will last. If the seat repairs will go for a bit (and I imagine they will) you should either get a battery saver or be prepared to re-input all your settings

I gave ya a thumbs up! However, i don't have the service manual for my girlfriend's 2016 Terrain. This may be a problem because I do have the service manual for my 2016 Toyota 4Runner and in that repair manual, it states: "The ATF temperature must be between 40 and 45°C (104 and 113°F) to accurately check the fluid level." BTW, the operating temperature (while not towing) for my 4Runner is about 170 degrees. This is concerning because the Terrain repair manual might very well also state to check the fluid level between a certain temperature range that is below "operating temperature". As transmission fluid (and many other fluids) gets hotter, it increases in volume. If the Terrain is similar to my 4Runner, if you let the fluid reach operating temperature and then check the level, you might NOT be putting in enough and when the fluid cools slightly and the volume decreases, this might lead to there NOT being enough transmission fluid!!! Just something to think about! CHEERS!

Unfortunately, as many manufacturers are doing now, GMC advertises these transmissions as 'serviceless' transmissions, and discourage anyone from servicing it, flushing, or even doing a partial drain-and-fill like this video. I am seeing this come up in a lot of cars I have dealt with in recent years. As an FYI, from the 2015 manual "It is not necessary to check the transmission fluid level. A transmission fluid leak is the only reason for fluid loss. If a leak occurs, take the vehicle to your dealer and have it repaired as soon as possible. There is a special procedure for checking and changing the transmission fluid. Because this procedure is difficult, this should be done at your dealer" O could not obtain any details on the proper operating temps for checking the fluid in this car. Technically, all cars have to be at a certain temp to check. The biggest ones to watch out for are CVT transmissions...they are very sensitive to how much fluid is in the transmission case. Luckily, these cars are not CVTs. I think it is very critical for your 4runner as if I remember, they have an electronic transmission...that may need precision like a CVT too. Not that the Terrain does not, it may not be quite as critical. I do mention to warm up the transmission and go through the gears at around the 9:30 mark, and then recheck. But you are 100% correct, there is an ideal temperature for the transmission. I really wanted to get these details. If nothing else, put in the same amount that came out, and then go for a decent drive or idle for a while. Not very long (not to operating temp, just to warm up) and recheck the fluid, and top up as needed. Thanks for pointing that out and for the great tips. Appreciate that feedback. Maybe someone with the info will see and post. If I ever get that info, I will make sure to update the description!

Hey. There is a filter, but you can't get to it unless you completely remove the transmission from the vehicle and open it up. The filter is a longer lasting mesh filter, which is good, but it can't be changed any other way

Unfortunately, it is a bit different. The drain plug and how to measure the transmission fluid is all different, so this video would not be a good guide to the 4 cyl models.

Are you supposed to check the transmission fluid level with the engine turned on with E-brake and the transmission in neutral position? Or with engine turned off and transmission in park? I tried both ways and in neutral oil was low, in park oil was high.

You should check with the car off. Here is a point form for the best way to check it. -turn car on. -Go through each gear (park, reverse, neutral, drive). -put the car back in park and turn off. Check to make sure the fluid is not too low or too high. -if all good, go for a drive. The transmission needs to be warmed up to get a true reading. A 5 minute stop and go city drive should do. -put car in park, turn car off and recheck fluid. That is your true level. It will be a little lower in neutral as fluid will flow into the transmission and torque converter, so it will drop a bit. When warmed up and in park, that is a true reading. Hope that helps.

@@shahintx Very good question. Officially, you want to check with the car in park, with the engine running and the transmission warmed up. As stated in the initial comment, go through all the gears, and then put it in park and check. However, there is considerable heat for some, and some are not comfortable with checking this with the car running, so if you are quick enough, you can turn the car off and check it within a couple of mins. I have done this and gotten the same reading. But if you either wait a while or let the engine cool, the reading will be off. If you want to be 100% true to the dealer recommendations, check with the car in park, but running and warmed up.

Removing the engine cover will give you room to unscrew the fill cap and refill with new fluid. The cover on GMC has only one bolt in the center. Remove bolt and pull up to unsnap the cover.

You can certainly change it if you want, but before making this video, I checked the service manual, 2 Nissan dealerships and 1 Infiniti dealership. They all said not to change it. So that's what I based the video off of.

Ideally, it should be on to check the fluid level, and warmed up to around 180 F. Run the car for a few minutes, shift through the gears, then check the dipstick.

@@wendymiller5496 Ok sounds good. There is one thing you can try, which is *supposed* to work. However, there are some people who are saying it did not work. If it does not, it has to be done with at the dealer (or you can buy a scanner with GM Tech 2 installed, but those are very expensive). Also, this assumes you have already changed the fluid. If you haven't, you definitely should. 1. Put the key in the ignition, and turn to the on position, but do not start the car 2. As soon as you do that, press the accelerator 3 times. Each time it must be fully pressed, all the way to the floor, as far as possible 3. Turn the car on. If this does not work, there is an error in some of these models, and it needs to be done with the dealer, as mentioned above. It is unfortunate, but that is the case for the Captiva.

Unfortunately, I can't directly answer that from here. If it just happened once, it could be that the transmission was working hard that day. If that message comes up, park the car and turn it off to let the transmission cool, or it could become damaged. The best thing to do is to get it checked it/scanned, if you do not have a scanner yourself. It could be that it needs new fluid, it could be a bad solenoid, or it something else wrong in the transmission. You definitely want to get that checked out soon.

You don't, unfortunately. There is no transmission pan that you can open to get access to it. To change, you have to remove the entire transmission and open it! Crazy! But no filter change here

You don’t need a machine to do a flush you can do it thru the radiator return line. That’s the way I do all my flushes.

Sorry I just rigged it with sum conduct tape and a metal clap fastner. N it worked but now the reverse wen out so im SOL. Just my luck I'm a new single mother of my adopted gbaby girl and having sum real bad luck. I'm on SSDI n having to move outta my home of 9 ¹/2 yrs. N had flat n was starnded on Rd for 24 hours with this vech. So had besties chubby pick it up n haul to his home. It's probably gonna stay n grave yard cuz I'm unable to fix it after spending all my $ plus 4 days of hard work under and inside reparing old and new damage.. so advice to anyone don't trust just anyone to repair a car. To my knowledge, this should be the same overall. Not sure if there was small changes in bolt sizes or patterns, but should be the same. From info I can pull, GM used this same 6T70 transmission from 2010 onwards.

I've always said that the filters should be changed, but manufacturers don't make it easy anymore. Additionally, the claim it is a 'lifetime' filter, which is misleading. Unfortunately, there is no way to get to th3 filter unless you REMOVE and split open the transmission. There is no pan at the bottom, and, even if there was, the filter sits near the middle of the transmission. So no changing it for sure

Oh it's in there. But there is no easy way to get to it. According to GM, it is a 'lifetime' filter, which is starting to become a common thing with manufacturers. I don't believe it, but you can't easily get to the filter, regardless. There is no transmission pan, so the only way to get to it is to open the transmission up. The upside is if you do transmission fluid changes at decent intervals, the filter should give you longevity

Normally I do, but GM had changed around the transmissions on these cars a couple of times, so I listed the transmission in the description instead (GT70). There was a couple of times where GM had 2 different transmission in the same MY. If you're not sure which transmission you have, you would need to contact the dealership with your VIN and they should be able to tell you.

@@daniel-ku4em to be honest, I have to disagree here. I've done tons of drain and fills on many cars of various makes and models, including GMs and problems transmission like the 4t65e....even CVT transmissions. There has never been an issue. The big issue is flushes, not drain and fills. Flushes remove all fluid and contaminants, and this actually puts stress on transmission. Drain and fills do not remove all fluid (for example.ple, these transmission holds about 6 quarts, I only drained about 4) and does not endeavor to remove any built up gunk inside. I used to completely flush transmissions way back in the early 2000s (hondas, Jbody cars) but I dont recommend that at all for any new car. Drain and fills should be perfectly fine. The exception is some transmissions don't do well on a first flush if the car has very high mileage (like 230000+ miles for the first time), but the transmission may be already shifting hard and on its way out. Not always, but it is possible. I've always flushed at a reasonable mileage (100000kms/60000 miles) and not only has there been no transmission issues to date, but any minor hard shifts that comes with age goes away and gas mileage improves. Every time. Maybe you have different experiences. However, if you read something that someone else posted, do know many people confuse drain and fills with flushes...they are very different things

@@NexusAuto You are 100% correct nexus, i had the same experiences in my auto career.... A drain and fill will not make a transmission worse... But the flush can especially if the transmission already has issues like slipping or noise, harsh shifting etc...especially on high mileage cars that are overdue for trans service.... There is most likely some old oil/gunk/sludge stuck in a valve body (or something) and trans starts making noise... Hey let's try a flush at jiffy lube... WRONG! That flush will loosen said gunk if done by an un-experienced tech/shop that doesn't ask the right questions to the customer And then migrates elsewhere and causes it to overheat or get starved for oil somewhere in the system by blocking a cooler line or valve body port... Or are just greedy for sales...where they should be like... Hey sir you got 150k miles on this car and it should be serviced every 60-80k miles... Have you ever had it done before?.... Uhhh uhhh idk i am stoopid and don't keep records.... I think so... Maybe?... Ok, sign here.... But we are not responsible for damage to your transmission. When, they should say.... No, sir i recommend a drain and fill instead.... It only changes 25-50% of the fluid but the risk is much less! And its CHEAPER! But you covered doing the extra changes... Later on. The original commentor, is dumb if they actually believe their statement to you.

@@shannonharris Absolutely agree with everything you said here Shannon. If a transmission fails after a flush, the transmission ALREADY had problems to begin with. Your assessment that flush dislodges any build up or gunk and moves it somewhere where it can do damage is exacly one of the biggest problems with the flush, but it is not the flushes fault...it is people not maintaining their transmission to begin with. And that is also one of the biggest reasons I don't like the mechanic industry. I saw it like that because many shop managers and mechanics know there can be issues with doing x job at x mileage, or x job with x issue already present, but instead of educating the client, they just get them to sign off. When I repair of vehicle, I let clients briefly in my work area or show them pictures, tell them my assessment, and if there is any risks, and let them make an educated guess. Sometimes, it leads to a job where I don't make as much money as opposed to if I just went ahead with the work, but the client appreciates it and now they will always trust me to always do the right thing for them and their car. And most importantly..I never exploit that trust. There are mechanics out there like that for sure, but unfortunately, they are harder and harder to find.
