    Great video. Thanks for making this video.Very calm person and obviously a very good mechanic, easy to understand video. I need to do this on my daughters 2012 Terrain 60k miles. Not looking foward to it but watching this was very informative. The chain has been noisy for sometime now and metal shavings on the solenoids when I swapped them out a couple of times. The car burns alot of oil too, but I will just keep adding!!!!

    Thanks for doing this and putting it on KZread. I have a 2010 Equinox with the same 2.4L engine and may be facing the same project. The dealer replaced the balance shaft chain under the GM secret warranty program (10 years, 120,000 miles), but not the timing chain and related tensioner and guides. There is either a gremlin in the electrical system or it needs engine parts, and at 89,000 miles, just 10,000 miles after the work on the balance shaft chain, the Chevy dealer wants $5,700 to throw parts at it. I subscribe to Alldata (and Mitchell) for my Equinox, and have looked for, but have never found, the shop manual on Alldata. There is a lot of good stuff on Alldata(and Mitchell) but finding exactly what I needed on Alldata was a challenge. For anyone interested, BBB Industries makes Technical Service Bulletins for most vehicles freely available on its web site. Often you can find relevant stuff there easier than you can on Alldata or Mitchell.

    Mtrunk 85 Mtrunk 85 Thanks. Alldata does, in fact, have my 2010 Equinox, and I have a subscription for that vehicle. I was inspired by your video, but it took me a while to find the detailed information in Alldata for removing and replacing the timing chain, and it has been more difficult to find easy ways to remove, or even test, the high pressure fuel sensor that screws into the fuel rail below the intake manifold, or to clean the clogged PCV orifice that causes oil leaks and rear oil seals to blow out. I think I have identified and corrected the well-known corroded wire and bad ground problems associated with the 2010-2012 vehicles. I believe the solution to the timing chain issue will resolve the error codes for a number of the sensors, so I may not have to test each separate sensor that I have codes for. If that doesn’t work, but I will have to start throwing parts at it. (Even with a brand new, fully charged battery, I get the lights for reduced engine power, service traction control, etc., and DTC codes for all sorts of sensors, all within seconds of just cranking the engine.). I agree that the Terrain data is virtually identical to the Equinox data, and on KZread I always search for info on both vehicles at the same time. Belatedly, I did find the information I was looking for.

Fortunately, I have identify this as the problem before it was too late and Im glad you mentioned subscribing to an online terrain manual which I believe will be well worth the money. My question to you is what parts should I order and repair as I install a new timing chain kit? Valve cover gaskets, front seal, etc. If Im going to be this deep into a fix I want to be sure to replace any parts that will be easily accessible. Thanks again for your efforts!

    Great video very helpful. Have you noticed a gasoline smell in your oil? I have in mine. It seems that the root of the problem might be the high-pressure fuel pump located on the valve cover can leak gasoline into the valve cover and dilute the oil. The lack of lubrication may be why our engines look like they have never had the oil changed even though I have always changed my oil myself and I know it's getting done with the correct oil at the correct interval.

  • @mtrunk8570

    @mtrunk8570

    Yeah that was the same experience I had the timing marks will only line up once. I lined everything up set the tensioner and then roll it over via the crank to make sure it was all good then closed it up. That's why if something happens to your timing you have to reset it all again. Not knowing histoy it hard to say but if you can roll over freely you don't have interference if you can't you probably have valve and piston interference and your timing is way off. More than likely you just didn't load the exhaust cam correctly.

    Most any auto parts has these kits cause this is a very common problem with these engines and they mostly have these kits on stock for around 135.00 at Napa.

    What did you use to install the harmonic pulley without moving the crank? Just an impact?

    Cody Anderson Yes I used an impact with a large Flat head waged between the balancer and the front cover just to keep it from turning. Once you get it all set make sure you turn it over by hand see this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/aohpyresaJm5paw.html

    Thanks man! Ur videos are giving me the confidence to get this job done. Manual I'm using online lists a couple different special tools to hold the phasers in place while setting the tensioner. Your little tap trick is a lot cheaper!

    Again thank you, still confused how a worn timing chain can cause excessive oil consumption like some articles have stated. I don't see this happening, it would require a mist of oil that is either picked up by the PCV during high vacuum and intake snorkel at low vacuum or some for oil to excessively drip on crank and being slung on cylinder walls at a rate unable to be controlled by the oil rings. What am I missing.

  • @MattsRageFitGarage

    @MattsRageFitGarage

    I've seen it on a couple engines over the years. When a timing set becomes worn to the point there is slack in it, the valve timing becomes late/retarded. Lower intake vacuum, higher combustion chamber and exhaust temperatures, poor engine performance and for some reason some engines like to use more oil under these conditions as well. If the problem is bad enough, I suppose some of the oil consumption could be from evaporation from the higher piston/cylinder temperatures.

    I reinstalled everything according to your video and others, but I have a problem. thing is, after everything is reinstalled and I turn the crank by hand, I develop slack in between both vvt cam gears(phasers). it goes slack then tight, slack then tight. did you have this issue? I don't understand why it does this and can not find a video of anyone having the same issue.

    I saw your other comment as well about loading the phasers when you have everything lined meaning timing mark with the exhaust cam/ phaser bolt loose you have to rotate the cam counterclockwise until it aligns with the pin on the phaser which is pushing down on number one exhaust valve. After that is done release the tensioner. Hope this helps. Merry Christmas

    I watched your video if you haven't changed the phaser I would but also not sure which model you have but on mine the manual did not match up with the 11' I explained in the other video "Phaser Update" it may help with your intake cam as that was the part that did not match for my year model. I know it is a pain I had to do the job twice. However I never had that much noise not even before I did the job. I would say your cam clocking has to be off and the VVT is trying to correct but can't correct that much just a guess, strange that its not throwing any codes.

    @@mtrunk8570 I believe oddly enough that the intake phaser is different depending on the transmission you have. If you have the 6t45 trans then both cam phasers are the same.

    I was just troubleshooting as I went. I had good compression. Also depends on how many teeth were jump one probably fine. The question is did the valves hit the pistons. If they did it's probably bad, if not probably ok.
