GMC Terrain 2.4L Ecotec Cam Phaser Update

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Terrain was giving a code over-advance so I took it down to try to trouble shoot the problem thinking that I had done the job incorrectly but found that I had actually done it right with the right parts the first time. Following the manual for the 2011 terrian and with the parts listed in the manual my pistons and valves interfeared with each other.

Thanks MTRUNK 85 I did watch and use your video for reference. I like the way you went into detail. Getting ready to install everything. You did a good job in researching the phasers. AS I SEE IT....LOL... I COULD BE WRONG DISCLAIMER...(SOMEONE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG) Its all in a single dowel hole position. Gm moved the intake dowel hole (Only change made) on the intake camshaft only in order to use the same phaser exhaust sprocket on either side and that your Phaser timing marks aligned at 11 & 2 (alot of videos say 10 and 2.) This would insure that you could not make a timing mistake if you put them on the wrong cam. You are correct, the Intake phaser GM #12578515 was REPLACED with GM #12621505 Exhaust phaser sprocket. And if set in the positions you will have interference and ruin your motor. I saw someone texted that they were afraid to start their motor after this repair. Just because of the repair at hand. So I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth since i also, was afraid I got it wrong...LOL So I wasnt going to start it without turning the motor as you said a couple of times to make sure I didnt have interference between the pistons and valves. This video is the best one i had found on the 2.4l . More detail and torque lbs. I hope this helps...any questions just reply here on MTRUNK"S Video... Thanks *So the first thing you should do after taking the valve cover off is to inspect the 2 phasers and see if they match info below. 2 different setups of the Camshaft Dowel Positions: Set Camshaft Dowel holes at 5 and 7 o'clock if: #1. If you have a (GM #12578515 front camshaft phaser sprocket, INTAKE) and a ( GM#12621505 rear camshaft sprocket, EXHAUST) then you would set your camshaft dowel holes at 5 O'clock (GM #12578515 front camshaft, Intake) and 7 o'clock (GM #12621505 rear camshaft, exhaust). CAMSHAFT #'S JUST IN CASE YOU ARE REPLACING THEM: Intake camshaft # 12608300 - Dowel Hole at 5 o'clock Exhaust camshaft # 12604896 - Dowel hole at 7 o'clock After the change for ....2011 thru 2017 (I didnt see check a listing for the 18 or 19 models) Set Camshaft Dowel holes at 11 and 7 o'clock if: (Both Phaser sprockets are the same ) #2. If the same (GM#12621505 front camshaft phaser sprocket, INTAKE) and a ( GM#12621505 rear camshaft sprocket, EXHAUST) then you would set your camshaft dowel holes at 11 O'clock (GM #12578505 front camshaft, Intake) and 7 o'clock (GM #12621505 rear camshaft, exhaust). CAMSHAFT #'S JUST IN CASE YOU ARE REPLACING THEM: Intake camshaft # 12634207 - Dowel Hole at 11 o'clock Exhaust camshaft # 12604896 - Dowel hole at 7 o'clock Note about the change: THE INTAKE CAMSHAFT is the ONLY part that was changed in order to use the same phaser sprocket (GM#12621505) doing away with phaser (GM #12578515). The Intake camshaft (GM # 12608300) was replaced with Intake camshaft ( # 12634207). The Dowel hole had to be changed to the 11 o'clock position instead of the earlier 5 o'clock position. This was so the timing mark on the sprocket would align for the timing chain colored links as in your video, at 11 and 1 o'clock positions.. One little hole had to be moved 180 degrees for this. GM cut costs by eliminating the older intake gear and, by changing the dowel hole in the camshaft, profitted by increasing the price of the 11 o'clock dowel camshaft to around $40 more.. Just to move a Dowel hole..LOL A win, win move for them. But as we see this engine has a big problem, so much trouble....still no recall yet. Lawsuit in progress . Maybe the recall will come shortly. PRAY YOU EQUINOX OWNERS...LOL Bottom timing Check: Just put the # 1 piston at TDC (Top Dead Center) The engine crankshaft key should be at 12 o'clock. * If you have this key at 12 o' clock the balance shaft and timing gear will automatically be in the correct positions. To check: The balance shaft (Rear Gear) has 2 marks together like this ( ll ) and should automatically be at 6 o'clock. The timing chain gear has a dot and it should be automatically at 5 o'clock position. Note if you dont see a dot there is a spacer over it. Just slide it off and you can see it. *Balance shaft gears: There are 2 of these gears , one for intake and one for exhaust. They are marked with arrows and can be turned, so place as follows: The right (Front) one is the intake gear and the arrow should be in the 12 o'clock position The left (Rear) one is the exhaust gear and the arrow should be in the 6 o'clock position So this would be your timing setup when you have all chains installed: Top End: 1. Piston is a TDC 2 Camshafts set as described above Depend on model and Phasers 3 Phasers diamonds or arrows at 11 and 2 4 Timing chain Painted links align phaser marks on 11 & 2 (Some say 10 and 2 instead for the phasers and 180 degrees opposite on the camshaft dowels would have to be called 8 and 4) I usually say 11 and 2 on phasers and 5 and 7 on cam dowel holes. As long as they are in this position the timing chain will align with its painted links as in your video. Timing chain 3 colored marks. 2 should be aligned on the intake and exhaust phasers timing marks and the other on the crank timing gear at 5 o'clock (Dot) Bottom End Check: 1. Engine shaft key is at 12 o'clock Note: If you put the key at 12 o'clock, the timing chain gear mark (#2 below) and the Balance chain gear mark (#3 below) automatically in their right positions. 2. Timing chain mark is at 5 O'clock 3. Balance shaft mark is at 6 o'clock 4. Balance shaft intake gear (Right front) is at 12 o'clock 5. Balance shaft exhaust gear (Left rear) is at 6 O'clock Balance chain 3 painted links should be as follows: 1 colored link at 12 o'clock (#4 above) 1 colored link at 6 o'clock (# 5 above) 1 colored link at 6 o'clock on the Balance shaft gear on engine crank. I know this is lengthy but if I knew this then it would have been so easy to understand. I have tried to make it as simple as I can. Anyone that can add to this let me know. I am a backyard mechanic...lol so "WHAT DO I KNOW"

I ordered a timing chain kit off ebay because it stated it would work on a 2011 LAF and 2013 LEA ecotech. I was replaceing the 2011 engine in my Buick regal cxl with an engine from a 2013 Verano. I wanted to service the used engine timing components before installation. I went to the local scrap lot and retreived a cam and throttle body from another 2011 2.4 regal to save time on the swap. when I compared the cam from the 2011 and 2013 they looked identical ! I swapped out the old phasers with the new ones and the cam from the scrap yard Buick along with the new timing guides and tensioners. The engine would not start and was running a code about cam and crank improperly timed ! What I did was retimed the old engine with it being out with the undamaged timing parts I removed from the Verano. It revealed the exhaust cam in the serviced Verano engine was 180 degrees off. I checked the phaser part numbers from the old phasers from the Verano engine and found them both identical . Last 3 numbers were 505. Since the phasers were in good condition I replaced the new ones with the old and the engine ran perfectly.I checked the dowel locations on the new phasers and one is 180 off as opposed to the other. The kit stated that it would work on this 2013 LEA motor. These phasers are only colored blue and black with no intake or exhaust written on them. My advice would be to note the location of the lobes of the cam and the dowell locations of the phasers and try not to move the cam from its TDC ! If you have to turn a cam 180 degrees to make a phaser align you are trying to install the wrong part ! KEEP THE CAMS IN TIME !Hope this helps someone else .P.S. I thought Id better add for those people wondering I did turn the engine over manually 3 times to check for interference and even cranked it over with a 180 out exhaust cam and had no piston to valve contact ! Reason unknown.

Interesting - I also just had this same issue, but on a 2010. I had replaced the timing chain, guides, etc., ran the engine without issues for maybe 2000 or so miles and got the over advanced code. Also started to run rough at that time. I figured I did something wrong, so tore into it again to see things. I was able to rotate the chain several times and all the marks lined up like they originally did. Chain pretty tight, guides good, etc. The 2010 appears to use different intake and exhaust VVTs, which I did. Do not have it figured out as of yet.

The instructions say that the engine 2.4 cams should be set for 5 hours, I tried to set it to five but then the crank lock does not fit! Why did you set it to 10 hours and not 5?

If you have the VIN, the AC Delco website can give you the correct part numbers, and you can get them locally or online from Amazon, an authorized AC Delco retailer. If your chain has jumped a few teeth but the top chain guide is still good and the other guides are not broken, don’t overlook a bad timing chain tensioner. It is cheaper and quicker to replace the tensioner with an OEM (AC Delco) part than to do a full timing chain replacement if it is not needed. It happened to my vehicle when the dealer replaced the chain for the water pump/ balance shafts under warranty and cut corners in removing and replacing the valve timing chain by not removing and resetting the chain tensioner off the vehicle, as was supposed to be done, and no new valve timing chain was installed. The dealer destroyed the internal components of my chain tensioner, but the damage can’t be seen until the tensioner is disassembled. If you remove the cam phasers to reset the timing, be sure to use new torque-to-yield bolts, typically torqued to 22 foot pounds plus 100 degrees. If this sounds like Greek, get a manual or a short subscription to Alldatadiy.com for written directions and watch a full timing chain replacement on this site or several others to be sure you understand about how to get the camshafts in the proper position and how to get the chain to correctly match the phaser timing marks. It’s not easy to do it this way, but it can be done.

I think you missed the point. The ecotec 2.4 used 2 different phasers with 2 different part numbers with different timing arrangements up until 2010. 2011 and after they updated the cams to use the same phaser on both cams which is the same as the older exhaust phaser. GM literally sells an intake phaser and exhaust phaser for this engine but depending on the year, you either need both or 2 exhaust phasers. He ordered one of each initially when he needed 2 exhausts.
