A great video. I remember as a child in 1967 standing on US Route 23 in Lowmansville, KY waiting to catch the Detroit MI to Pikeville KY Greyhound. We would stand beside the highway and flag the bus down. They called them "flagstops" back in the day. I have no idea if Greyhound even has flagstops today or not. You would pay the driver directly. I as a child was so happy to see the bus approaching and was even happier when I saw it was a Scenicruiser. My mother could have cared less what kind of bus it was. Our trip that day was roundtrip from Lowmansville, KY to Paintsville, KY. 27 miles each way. I knew that our return later in the day would be on this same bus with the same driver. The bus would terminate in Pikeville, KY and then return to Detroit, MI. The driver for that portion would drive from Ashland, KY to Pikeville, KY and return the same day. It was a run that was in high demand as the driver was at home each night. I remember the seats in that bus and you have recreated them spot on. Thanks so much for sharing this video.

Absolutely amazing restoration of this AWESOME coach. The 4104's and 4501's were REAL buses, highway travelers, and solid.

Wow. This bus is awesome. My Dad was a Greyhound Bus Driver. I took my first trip with him when I was 7 years old - from New York to Boston - on a Scenecruiser. I sat upstairs by the Tear Drop. You've recreated what I remember riding in. Hope I can take my Dad on your bus. He's 83 and in great shape. He'd love it!

I remember riding a bus like this with my mom and sister when we were kids! We road the Greyhound bus from Washington State back to W.V. back in the 60’s. Since thin I’ve always wanted to drive a Greyhound bus. I drive for a local charter bus company here in Florida part time and for a local school district. Greyhound was my inspiration for wanting to drive a big bus since I was a child. Maybe some day it will happen. Love you’re bus.

Thanks for the comments. I researched extensively, and attempted to restore as accurately as possible. I grew up in the old car hobby, and still have several anttique cars. I became bored and disinterested in just cars. I wanted something different. Something that included more history, and could get instant reactions from people. These immediately spark memories for so many people. Strangers tell me the most interesting stories about riding these old things. Original examples are rare.

Wow, looks just as I recall. My dad drove buses 42+ years, the first two with a predecessor company & the rest with Greyhound. Occasionally I would ride with him from the station to the maintenance shop. You mentioned the skylight, it seems I recall dad mentioning that Greyhound had a lot of maintenance issues with them. Leaking, and too much sunlight, straining the AC system. It seems in later years that the skylights were coated with a semi-opaque finish. Keep up the good work.

WOW, Tom, what an awesome restoration of a bus that sure brings back wonderful childhood memories for this old guy!!! I saw that on KZread. It was quite something to revisit those times when the scenicruiser was king of the road. There's only one experience I had that could upstage it. And that is the Trailways 5-Star Golden Eagle Luxury Service, replete with red carpet leading to the entrance way and a beautiful stewardi waiting to greet you aboard, well designed interiors, with galley and curtains to finish off a first class trip. I went, by the way, from Dallas to Houston. Those were the days!

The Silver Eagle destroyed my taste for Greyhound the first time I rode one. I would have loved to travel on the Golden Eagle 5-Star, but did not get the chance. Compared with the Silver Eagle, the MCI 7 is a big nothing. Trailways did have a few MCI 7's; I never rode on the Trailways version, however. And, I definitely prefer the Silver Eagle over the Scenicruiser. I have also been on both the Greyhound and Trailways versions of the 4104. Again, I prefer the Trailways version.

Tom; Looking at your video brought back some great memories. My dad, LB Dismore, was a driver for Greyhound from the late 50s into the early 80s. I made many trips with him, and it was always an unexpected treat when he was assigned a SuperScenicruiser. I can remember him having a seat cushion that he always carried, since the driver's seat was pretty uncomfy! Look forward to seeing your work someday! I have some clients around Peoria and also plan to attend the Blytheville gathering. Terry

Attend the "Ghosts of Highway 61 - Dixie Tour 2013" to be held in Blytheville, Arkansas April 4-6, 2013 and a person would stand a very good chance of riding a real live Greyhound Scenicruiser. There will be several to choose from too. Event will be held downtown at the restored former (1937) Greyhound terminal. Open to the public (free) and any antique coach owner, coaches built prior to 1980. Don't miss this - it will be a one-of-a-kind event. Tell your friends !

Funny thought... Separate HVAC/accessory engine in the 50's for a PD4501 would mean 3 engines for one coach. hahaha.

@pd4501771 Perhaps for charters, although you would have to either change the livery, which for the 5401 is sacrilege, or Greyhound would wish to reacquire the coach and you would make a killing off the sale.

They removed the rear 13 seats and installed a bulkhead, with an outside access door. Ran some in regular service, I once took a rock band on a college tour, used a freighter for their stage equipment. Hope to see you in April.
