GMC Envoy: Hard Start When Hot & Low Fuel Pressure - Part I

In this video I have a look at a customers GMC Envoy XL with the big 4.2 that came in with a complaint of, "MIL on and hard to start after it is warmed up."
A quick test drive leads us right to the answer. It's looking like a fuel delivery issue but we need to drop the tank and run a few more checks.
-Enjoy!

    But camera's don't talk back normally, and they're a bit less judgy too. As far as I know a camera won't stop recording if you don't torque a bolt to factory specs, or possibly say something that is politically sensitive to a small number of viewers.

Change oil every 5,000 and use Lucas fuel treatment consistently. Live in rust belt and frame cracked from rust. I'm gonna weld it up and keep driving.

    Thanks for teaching me 2 things in this video! About the o2 sensor should peg to about 1000mv during wot and that being that it went to 0 it was a fuel delivery problem. And the other thing was about an amp per 10psi for the fuel pump. You are one of the reasons why i continute to learn in this career. I may be 100% trained by GM but i still have a lot to learn!

  • @SouthMainAuto

    @SouthMainAuto

    So it is a sometimes but not always case. It is more like 0.8amps per 10psi (most of the time) and MOST vehicles go into power enrichment mode at WOT some stay switch the O2's but none that I know of drop to 0v's

    @@grannyflatgarage7599 a vacuum leak can make the 02 peg early as there's unmetered air getting the system designers for the most part will desgin w.o.t to match top out put of o2 sensor if you find a vechicle that has pegged o2 sensors at half throttle its either a vacuum leak because the engine is receiving enough air to Maximize the 02 its just getting in a way the computer dont understand or its bad o2 sensor it think half way is pegged out

  • @donwasse7892

    @@grannyflatgarage7599 WOT means the throttle plate is also fully open, there is very little to no engine vacuum during this. Engine vacuum is created by the intake stroke trying to pull air past a restriction (the throttle plate). Diesels don't have a throttle plate, hence no vacuum from them, same idea.

    Aaaaaah.... The infamous GM fuel pump. Had one go out on my 2002 Chevy Blazer (4.3) about 150 miles from home. One moment it was working, the next it wasn't. Crank, crank, crank, but no starty. Had the vehicle towed home (to the Chevy dealership). Where it proceeded to start and run for the next three days. Just as they were fixin' to call and have me pick it up, it wouldn't start. My son's 2002 Silveraldo (also 4.3), did the same thing a few months later. Gotta love that timed obsolescence!

    Eric, I had a similar situation with Dodge B350 Maxivans and the 360 TBI V-8. Everything checked fine but the engine would lay down when you hit 3rd gear it just wouldn’t pull. I ended up running a FP gauge under the engine cover and watching the pressure as I drove and sure enough first gear it was fine, second you could see the needle waver and at the top going into third it would start to drop down and that coincided with the laying over of the engine. A new fuel pump fixed the issue. And although it had the extended range fuel tank 30+ gallons, they were always kept full so the elec motors weren’t overheating.
