I drove the 2cycle Detroit's quite a bit, but for some reason the video sound sparks my memory of the old Greyhounds I rode as a boy. Spent many miles and hours in those buses and hearing them pull out of the old depot's. The sound really takes me back.

Very cool. Loved the "Astro" ever since I was a kid, almost 60 years ago! I was a big model builder back then...couldn't find a GMC "Astro" anywhere, but I remember getting a hold of an AMT model of the Chevy Titan 90 cabover...sister unit of the Astro. Anybody remember the Chevy Titan?? Awesome camera angles on the ride-along, BTW... 👍📽👌

The first I remember hearing one of these was in a Continental Trailways (Eagle) bus in the early 1960s and then later on in road trucks. In late 1973 our bus fleet bought 40 new Flxibles with 8.71s (no the old ones with 6.71s weren't being retired, not by a long shot !) All old Detroits are music to my ears !!

Beautiful Astro. Nice to see someone double clutching too. A diesel mech friend worked for Cat many moons ago and there was an old guy there who used to rebuild all the boxes. He was 'that guy', the one that had been around since Adam was a lad, and knew his way around every gearbox know to man. He told my friend he'd only ever had to replace gearsets on trucks where drivers 'floated' the gears and could tell someone who knew how to double clutch properly as soon as he opened the box for inspection. Guys like that are worth their weight in gold nowadays, and sadly most have long since passed. Hope that other Astro found a good home - another beautiful truck.

That is another great video, I love the ride along. That camera angle is perfect. I love the sound of that 8v71. Back in the late 70s I drove a 1974 Titan 90 Chevy. It was a 350 Detroit with a 13-speed. The 350 was just a souped-up 318 with a turbo. I knew a guy with the long nose 9500 Jimmy with a 318. He showed up for work on Monday morning with straight pipes and went back home early afternoon. When he showed up for work on Tuesday morning he had the Mufflers back on. The straight pipes was fun for a little bit but after his head was about to explode he had to give up. Straight pipes on Blue Jay would be alright because you don't have to drive it, day in and day out 12 to 14 hours a day. Have fun on your truck Jamboree I wished I could be there but I cannot.

Around 1984 I was going south on I 35 in Missouri just south of the Iowa state line. I heard a noise, I thought it was a low flying plane. Turned out was a GMC Astro with a 12 V 71 with no mufflers. I talked with the guy on the c.b. , and he said he took the mufflers off put straight pipes on, when he got back home the mufflers were definitely going back on ! I said , I can understand that. O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸 Will either one of those trucks be at your show? Hey, we love to look & wish! And make a deal! Gotta keep those cabovers visible! Grind them until you find them? Oh, NO! It has been many years since I’ve driven a GMC Astro. I think it had a 13 speed. Is that what yours has? I’m with you…even though straight pipes would look & sound good, the mufflers give it enough of the original, cool low tone that roars when you’re gearing it up & gettin down on the throttle! Oh, YEAH! What a sound! Loved the ride along! Thanks for the update on the other trucks as well. My wallet is kinda LOW right now. I could really use a truck that is able to roll on down the road, especially with my REO & Ford projects waiting. We finally found a ride for my graduate & it took us down a bit, but so worth it! This Saturday…still planning on coming unless I’m working on our trailer. We need a good road trip! Keep it real my friend!! Blessings! 🥰🤩✌️

Talk to the mechanics who work on the transmissions when they fail. They will all tell you use the clutch. Especially with old vintage equipment. These trucks have worked decades and need all the proper care we can give ‘em to last. Trust me because I’m having to have obsolete trans parts machined for the C90.
