I've built a few of these bad boys, from trial and tribulation, here are some things to consider: ~Oil pan/capacity 7-9ltrs crank scraper and windage tray, eg High Energy ~Vr-Vs blocks are considered the better choices, additional webbing and relieving for stroker crankshafts. The VT blocks have shown inferior metallurgy and casting faults. ~Quality crankshafts COME or HARROP, ground to accept chevy rods (more selection than Holden) and chevy rear main seal, cross drilled of course. ~ I have used 6 inch rods, better dwell, less reciprocating weight. ~Quality harmonic balancer ~Studs all round ~Cast iron oil pump, low volume, not alloy. I modify them to make pressure relief adjustable. ~Timing chain can be swapped out for the Mercedes triplex chain (same pitch) just need to cut to appropriate length. ~Oil restrictor fitted to centre cam bearing. gallery. ~relieve/smoothen out valley/ lifter area to aid oil return. ~Pre flattened wire head gaskets ~Never use cork gaskets, later model have neoprene sump gaskets, I have always used quality liquid gasket for the valley with no problems. ~Heads, lots of varieties, I have had good results using COME cast iron "Bracketmaster", these are not available new any longer, they were VN OE refinished by COME, with stock size valves, but fitted with sodium filled. More modern alloy, would probably have better figures. ~ Get rid of the "bunch of nana's" , this is where your choice of ignition will dictate your direction. I personally ran carbs so I ran with a Harrop single plane. These engines will produce good HP with longevity, such a shame Holden stopped producing them, in favour of the LS. Its as though their fate was sealed in 1998.

Got about 3 hours run time before the permaseal graphite head gaskets blew out into the valley 😑 iv pulled the heads back off and im waiting for my felpro steel oring gaskets to arrive. Hopefully they last longer than the permaseals

The LS is built by folks that take pride in their work, much like the Japanese, the Canadians. They're very weird to most of us Americans, but I appreciate them completely. LS the world. One tiny thing that I learned the hard way, when using guide plates for your pushrods, you want to use hardened (forged) pushrods. The ones they put in look to be hardened btw, so I'm not whining.

They were called the “plastic” V8 because they were viewed as inferior or a toy in comparison to the small block Chevy. I think they stood the test of time though. What I find really interesting is that Holden made a prototype overhead cam version before deciding on the LS for VT2
