It started Downhill in the 69's, when the liberals decided there was plenty on money for free housing, free groceries, for all the "Special people". Crime skyrocketed. Muggings, Robbery, murder. Guess that free house and money wasn't enough. Still isn't today. After trillions of dollars, a million "Programs", things are worse. Maybe it's time for the "Special People" to get jobs. Keep the hands and mind occupied. Idle hands are the Devil's Playground".

What a time to be alive. People were so proud of what they built, the companies that built it, they celebrated it on the streets.

This gold `55 still exists. the gold trim was replaced with regular chrome, and the car had been repainted black/white and sold retail via a dealer. When it was found, the VIN was verified as being THE 50 millionth show car. No updates since I read this about 8 years ago.

This exact gold '55 was melted down and the metals were incorporated into the Apollo 11 lunar vehicles. The 24K gold trim pieces were made into coins given out to every person working on the mission. My grandpa got one because he was the janitor who cleaned the ashtrays in mission control.

Thank you posting this Golden Chevrolet promo. I grew up with a Chevrolet Dealership on the corner of our street (Springfield Avenue and Ohio Street) in Maplewood, NJ. I clearly recall a new 55 BelAir sedan parked on the street outside of the showroom. The unique thing was that this shiny new Chevy was gold, inside and out. I was told by a salesman that the car belonged to the owner Mr.Clark, of Clark Chevrolet. I was born in 1946 so I was only 9 at the time, but I was aware that the “golden Chevy” had a special meaning and now I know what it was. Clark Chevrolet gave me a love of cars, due to the kindness of the salesmen, the mechanics, the body & prep men and the service team.

@@carshowreporter Pamela: Thank you for the nice response. Several years later Mr Clark sold the building and the business to two men who were brother-in-laws . They owned a Chevy dealership in southern NJ and were thinking of expansion like an “auto mall”. I had purchased a 1959 Impala 2dr hard top from L&S Chevrolet in Union NJ in 1961/62, and drove and loved that car through my high school years. However after a few more years the partnership ended and one bought out the other. In 1971 my father bought a new Impala from the dealership which was now named “Muller” . No, I never went into the automobile business. ☹️

The plant that made the 50 millionth car now makes trucks since the early 70's...I remember the parade although I was very young..When this film was made probably close to 90000 people worked for GM in 11 plants in the Flint area..This is a conservative figure in that Buick Motor Division that started here in Flint in the mid-50s had 50000 people employed in one complex..As of 5/2018 there are 3 plants left employing about 6000 people..

It is sad how the mighty as fallen. In the fifties, GM built about 52% of the cars in the #1 market in the world. Today, China is the largest by far ( just look at the population and the growing " middle class ", GM is #4 in the world ( as of 11/17 ) behind VW, Toyota, Renault/Nissan, and robotics have drastically reduced the man hours needed to produce a car. Time moves on and we ( companies and people ) need to accept, look forward and change to keep up. Thanks for your insightful comment and watching, John.

They see you coming because your not their buddy. I have to find some way to learn how to do mechanical repairs. I understand the very basics but actually doing something is always different.

Join a local club. It helps to have a garage/junkyard buddy. Many can do either mechanical or body, but few can do both.

You need to make a realistic list and double the time planned for each step! I did a quick search and saw this book, www.muttonhollowchevys.com/How-To-Restore-Your-Classic-1955-1956-Chevrolet-_p_1684.html It is for a '57 but the process is the same. I would suggest look for more books. You may find a '58 version! By the by, 4 doors are now respected and collectable.

@@carshowreporter I would drive Grandad from Detroit to Miami Beach every winter in his Cadillac Fleetwood painted with that special 50Mth Anniversary gold paint. He passed in 1983. Wish I could locate that 1982 Gold Fleetwood.🤔

That's what I was wondering as well. It would be great to hear that it's being cared for. Also, It crossed my mind that my grandmother's '55 may have been on the assembly line that day. I bought it from her in '69 for $100.00. My Dad and I de-chromed it and changed the color from pale green to red. Then, swapped the "three-on-the-tree" to on the floor. I wish I still had it! 🙁

They have 557 million dollar payment due in 2022, or they will be bankrupt. GM and Chrysler both, have paid back their loans/bailouts, Kenny.

i think the 55 chevy is the best american designed car of all time. it got chevy out of the 1940 style and into the modern era and it holds up today. if i had a choice of any car that's what i would want. my first car was a 54 chevy which i paid $50 bucks for in 1966 and i drive a 2015 silverado wt today.

The '55 was a clean design which brought Chevy into the slab side fashion which Ford, Studebaker, Hudson, and Nash ( amongst the majors ) released by 1954. Add the spice of a light weight, OHV V8 under the hood and you have a sales winner. 1,713,478 were sold!! Now, personally, I agree with you, I prefer the 50 - 54 ... in a convertible, of course! Flint was once a prosperous town then GM just abandoned it, however, the Flint plant is still in operation producing heavy-duty trucks - at least for a while - a long while I hope.

We have always had dedicated customers. Back then, there were Ford, Dodge, Plymouth, Nash, Hudson, etc families. Same with '95 and, even today. By the way, my Geo Metro convertible ( stop laughing!!! 😉😄) just turn the second time around the odometer. The industry has made many, great cars and we appreciate them!

It is still here!!

Way before corporate tax cuts. Eisenhower said taxes for corporations in the end creates more competition between companies. After WWII things were starting off well for the working class. Unions were getting stronger and the middle class was growing and one income could afford a very good living. Then around the early seventies corporations went crazy building factories over seas and the beginning of the end began. Reagan became a spokesman for GE and later became governor of California and corporations began buying the Republican Party. Then Reagan became president and the tax cuts for corporations and millionaires began and taxes for everyone else went crazy and republicans have been doing it more and more with the Busches and then trump made the biggest cut for Corporations and billionaires shifting practically the entire tax burden onto the working class. The screwed up part is most of the people making comments about how great it used to be are the same ones that think Reagan Busch and trump were the greatest presidents ever.

You are the only commenter who understands the era. Harlow Curtis, the CEO of GM, 1955, made a little more than 1.7 million. GM commanded 54% of the market in 1955. Mary Bara was paid 29 million in '23. GM has 17% of today's market. Even after adjusting for inflation, Bara was paid more than 10x Curtis. A Ford assembly line worker fought and won an average salary of $106/week, $2.65/hr ( www.detroityes.com/mb/showthread.php?14529-automotive-wage-history#:~:text=In%20a%20quick%20skim%20of,in%201955%20being%20actually%20%24106.68. ) Compaired to today's salary, after the strike: $20/hr and, only after working 6 months as a temp for a 3rd party at less pay. This was an age when the new car introduction was a major event and GM was the largest company in the world. Today, we can see 1 to 2 years in advance via the net, the car is not the center of our lives ( except us gearheads!!!! ) and GM isn't even number one in the industry. Time marches on. Great question, f r e e b i r d!! Just for comparison, Chevy build about 1.8 million cars in 1955, which is about 4,931 cars per day. I could not find a break out of just Chevy production of 2021, but GM produced 2,217,832 which means 6,076/day. Now, are the factories open on Tday???

The Cadillac OHV V8 set the benchmark, and the Chevy OHV8 knocked it out of the park and brought it to the masses !! The '58 grew big, but the improved suspension and bigger 8 made up for the extra weight. It was big and beautiful, but the styling was dated compared to Chrysler Corp's Forward Look. The one year design has never been appreciated until fairly recently for the tour d' force it is. Thanks for watching and commenting, Chris.

The '55, 2dr wb was 115" ,L195.6, w 74" weight 3,330lbs., 1957 2dr, wb 115", L 200", w 74" weight 3,390lbs, 1958 2dr wb 117.5, L 209.1" w 77.7", weight: 3,424lbs ( shipping ) , 1959 2dr wb 119", l 210.9" w 79.9", weight 3515lbs ( shipping ). These are all base, 2 doors and shipping weight, versus curb weight. The fifties were all about lower, wider, heavier, chrome and fins! Part of the tri-five's appeal was availability. Like the '32, they got to the used car lots first so more hot rodders could buy them, as well as the right combination of power to weight. The '58's, in my humble opinion, were more about luxury with their new chassis and options. It’s sad that GM abandoned Flint leaving it a town of boarded up storefronts. Same with Detroit moving it’s factories to the suburbs and killing off the city.

Pamela Hirschhorn Thank you so much. , That was great! I’m glad that such a historic vehicle wasn’t lost to the junk heap. And while we don’t know for sure who has the car now, it’s fairly certain that the cars history is known to the new owner. Hopefully we will see that beautiful 55 take its rightful place in a museum at some point. Thanks again. That’s an amazing story.... and Thank you for your help....

This is what happens when you build a reliable standardized product ! maintenance is easy and parts are plentiful and low cost ! there will always be more gm vehicles on the road than any other manufacture

Yes, back in the ol' days you could do this, Scotty. The perfect example of reliable, standardization was the VW Type 1 ( Beetle ). To bad time marches on and people stop buying the same ol', same ol'. Just ask Henry Ford. We have more GM cars ( many with unique parts ) on the road because they were the largest manufacturer for decades. Through the '20's, about 50% of the cars were Fords. Yes, the story of the rediscovery is in the string. It was saved from being cut up into a track car, but from there, it has gone underground again.

@@carshowreporter another mistake by autocorrect. Jalen or something that my phone came up via autocorrect for Jay Leno. Not sure what chance you missed. But when I was about 20 this man stop me as I went into this Walmart . He want to talk with me for some reason. Basically answering his question about what I thought of the store. I'm not sure why pick me out. But my understanding he didn't do things without a purpose even if I random. Looking back what could a person do at 45 minutes of Sam Walton's time?! That was a missed opportunity. He left after our conversation. But all the store management and the managers above them we're quick to inform me who he was they want to know what we talked about. But then I don't think about capitalizing on simple conversation. Nothing at all to do with old cars and trucks. But an opportunity missed all the same. I don't often go back and edit for autocorrect mistakes. But thanks for pointing that one out and I'll change it in case somebody else wonders.

It's Sad what GM has become. Getting rid of Pontiac was a Stew ped thing to do. I've always been a GM guy. But I love them all From GM to AMC of the 60's early 70's, and many up thru to 90's. The Cutlass thru 88, Camaro to 81, Trans Am to 81, the 90's Impala SS was good, I liked the 70's Aspens and Valarie, and the Riviera. Dodge is Kicking A today. That Challenger looks like the old one. The Camaro is nothing like an old one, and ugly to me. The Dodge truck is sharp, the Charger,. GM has nothing. Ford has the Mustang.

I fully agree with you with Pontiac, Jeff!! They just started with the G8 and were planning to bring it the G8 ute. They also had a nice, Solstice fastback coupe. Oh yes, they signed 50cent to endorse a line of Ponchos, too. The only thing which saved Buick was the strong sales in China ( around 1,000,000/year!! ). Today, Chevy offers 1 sedan, the Malibu, Buick is only suv/cuv and Cadillac has 2 sedans!!! China is GM's largest market!! They have 15.2% of the market in the US. It was over 50% in 1955! Little did they know, by the mid 70's Japanese imports would take over all across North America and become far more reliable and fuel efficient cars. I never owned an American made car, I've had Honda's and Toyota's for 19 years I prefer reliability and fuel economy fewer repairs needed and Japanese cars are so much more better in every way possible. There's more engine swaps that can be done and easier to find parts, more aftermarket supports as well.

Well, in the late fifties, Detroit was well aware of the growing import market, lead by VW and Renault. They answered with the Rambler American, Studebaker Lark, Corvair, Falcon and Valiant, as well as importing the Opel, British Ford, Vauxhall and SIMCA. The imports kept growing, as did the " import fighters ". Toyota and Datsun ( Nissan ) entered the US with poorly designed cars for the American market. Both learned their lessons very well, and, by 1968, had evolved into the Corolla, Corona, and 510..... Meanwhile, Detroit launched the next wave, the Gremlin, Vega and Pinto. The Japanese copied American style, combined with VW's parts system and Dr. Deming's religion of quality. You know the rest of the story...... It is such a shame they could not accept change is inevitable, and customer service lasts for years. On a quick search, GM produced 2.2 million vehicles in the US. That is a bit more than almost nothing. With that in mind, China is buying more Buicks and Cadillacs than the US market. I am on your side, I would like to see competitive, GM, sedans and, dare I say, ( dare, Dare!! ) station wagons built here.

US production is at a low right now, with over 9 million cars build in 2021 ( not including trucks ) . In 1955, a banner sales year by far, a little over 8 million cars were produced. The GM heyday in the US is at a low ( 17% market share ) but their number 1 sales market today is China. Buick sells about 1 million vehicles per year there!!! Well, Garlitz, you will get a few arguments from truck, Camaro, Cadillac CTS V, Pontiac G8 GPZ, and, of course, Corvette owners.... Meanwhile, GM let their market share drop from 52% to today's 17%. Their biggest market is China. Please check out my other videos.
