Gluten Free is no Fad- Intolerance vs Sensitivity and Celiac Disease- Thomas DeLauer… Before you bag on your friend who is gluten intolerant, saying that they're just making it all up to be part of a fad, I want you to hear me out on this. What I want to do is I want to talk about gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity, and true celiac disease and talk about how they're all interrelated.
A lot of people seem to think that this gluten thing is just a fad, that people are going gluten-free because it's popular right now. But the reality is that there's some true science and some true physiology that proves that we're starting to have a bigger issue with gluten as a whole, and it all comes down to how our bodies respond to it in the first place and how wheat has changed over the years.
But what I want to do is I want to help you understand the link between what is gluten intolerance, what is true celiac disease, and then what is a wheat allergy. Okay, they're all interrelated to some degree, but if you understand what's happening you might not be so hard on that friend that says he has an issue with gluten, even though he's not celiac. Let's break it down.
First off, we have to understand why we're having so much of an issue with gluten these days. Is it the fact that it's just more so in the mainstream and we're hearing more about it? I'm sure to some degree that's true. I am sure there is some psychological effect that is causing more people to have a gluten reaction when they don't really have one. That's always going to be the case.
But the reality is that we have changed as humans. The over-consumption of wheat has led us to develop different processes in the body that cause us to have more reactions to wheat. When you consume one of the same foods for a long time, over and over, you do start to cause an issue within your body. But that's not even the issue I'm talking about today. The other issue is the hybridization of wheat.
Now, say what you want about GMOs. The fact is this hybridization of wheat in particular has elicited a specific change in the proteins. Wheat now has new proteins in it. Approximately 5% of modern day wheat is entirely new proteins that our bodies really have the enzymes to break those proteins down. That truly is causing an issue.
We've hybridized wheat to make it a little bit more drought-resistant, make it bug-resistant, but also we end up doing specific things, like spraying Roundup on it, to dry it out faster so you can have more harvesting cycles. This causes some issues within our guts. But all that aside, let's talk about what's happening when you have a gluten intolerance.
The first one I want to talk about is non-celiac gluten intolerance. These are the people that whenever they consume bread or whenever they consume gluten starches, they just feel sick. They feel bloated. They feel really lethargic and they just don't feel good. They say, "I don't feel good when I eat gluten."

Thousands of people thought they were depressed, went on mind-altering meds; but what they really had was a gluten allergy. This is only between last 1-2 decades. Food is making people sick, and they are on antidepressants instead of altering their diet. I think this is a leading factor to why so many feel so good on a Keto diet.

Remove the gluten, don't take pills for something that has nothing to do with it! In 2018, the vast majority of doctors don't believe people are reacting to the food they eat. In America, you take pills so you can keep on eating the shit they sell you.

Well said, I had no idea it was gluten making me depressed this whole time. I had a gluten free burger for the first time last week and for the first time in my life, I didn’t have that bloated/ depressive feeling afterwards. I ate it and felt... great! For the past week by being gluten free, my legs aren’t achey and tingling, I don’t feel depressed, I don’t feel lethargic, I don’t have brain fog, and I’m not constantly constipated anymore either. I can’t believe I wasn’t self-aware enough to realise it was the gluten doing this to me. I just thought there was something wrong with my mental health. I can’t stress how much I highly recommend anybody to try a gluten-free diet, or just notice their change in mental/ physical well-being immediately after consuming gluten-rich food to see if it is actually the gluten doing this to them instead of something else. I was actually one of those people who ridiculed others for it being a fad as well. Oh how wrong I was!

I have never found anyone else with my reaction to wheat bread. I get insomnia anytime I eat whole wheat bread. I went 4 years with very little sleep. Out of a process of elimination, I determined this was the problem. I eliminated wheat bread and within 2 days I was sleeping all night. I have tested this theory several times over the last 6 years. If I eat a sandwich or have toast with whole wheat bread, I won't sleep that night.

It answered questions that I have been asking since before the gluten free "fad" got into full swing when I first realized I had a problem with gluten. This lends a lot of insight into why a couple beers doesn't bother me that much but a cup and a half of rice sends me over the edge. LOL

I have Hashimoto’s and my thyroid wasn’t “responding to meds” at all and I had nodes and my weight kept piling on no matter what I ate or how much I exercised and when my levels started getting normal I was told I shouldn’t be symptomatic anymore but I was, I could barely function. Going gluten free was the only thing that helped but it was like an accumulative affect. So after about 3 months of gluten free my weight started dropping rapidly (like 30kg in 5 months) and pretty much 80% of my symptoms went away. My endo said that gluten triggers an autoimmune response in lots of people with autoimmune disease not just celiac which is super interesting and drastically changed the quality of my life.

Little House in the Big Apple do you find if you have gluten now like accidentally your symptoms come back for a few days - weeks depending on how much? Like I find if I have a bit of sauce with gluten I’ll be fine but if I have that little bit of sauce like a few times in a short period of time I will become symptomatic again for a few days or even weeks.

It really wasn't until I switched to keto and then carnivore, that I noticed my face to be normal.... I just can't believe that all my life I've gone to dermatologists and not one suggested a diet change. I used to live on creams and other products, to avoid an embarrassing peeling-off face. Hi Thomas, big fan follow all your advice. just curious I know the answer will be yes but if i was to start taking Grenade 50 cal pre workout before training (weights i do purely fasted cardio when i wake) would my weight session no longer be fasted and even if that was the case would the pump benefits etc out weight the fasted training? Regards

Thanks man, I have been having issues with both gluten and lactose. One thing is my midsection and back get extremely inflamed to the point it wakes me up in the middle of the night another is stomach issues and diahrea. How is this legal? Can you do a video on why/how this occurs?

Celiac hepatitis here- from childhood, eating gluten made my abdomen swell for days amongst other symptoms like post nasal drip, with either bread, rice etc served at almost every meal. Switched to keto a year ago and my abdomen since looks normal after eating... wish I discovered keto decades ago.

I have this with all grains especially, corn, wheat, quinoa and rice. My symptoms are not so much in my gut (except for rice) but more as severe joint pain. Whenever I eat something that contains any grain that I am aware of it or not. I will know the next day because I can barely walk. I have similar reactions to pulse and legumes as well. Would that be the same for pulse and legumes? The keto diet has really helped me in that sense. I also found that if I go over 5% total carbs, my osteoarthritis comes back within a few days. Is it normal? Do you have any tricks for that? Thank you for all this valuable information that you give us!

This is very comprehensive with good explanations. Does anyone else out there get tachycardia if they consume gluten? Since going GF, I’ve had two slip ups...and both times crazy fast heart rate (resting) and even elevated BP. It goes away after a few hours. Probably comes on about 30-45 minutes after ingestion.

I'm a service-connected veteran and get all of my care from my local VA (Palo Alto CA, my VA doc is also a Stanford Doctor). I have severe and moderate arthritis in many joints of my body, I've had one hip replacement, another one schedules for end of Oct and will need a shoulder replacement after that. One of the things that I was told was to remove gluten out of my diet as much as possible, if not completely. OMG!! This is very difficult to do! I LOVE GLUTEN!! For the last year I've been trying to eat gluten free. I've done pretty good, but not 100%. Gluten is in so many things, you have to look for things to say "Gluten Free". Even many products that are rice or quinoa still have some flour in them. I will say, it isn't making my arthritis go away, but it does help with the pain management. I'm able to use topical gels and no oral medications (which are not an option for me due to stomach issues) to control pain. Do I miss gluten? YES!! However do I feel better? Yes I do.

#DeLauer Audio distortion occurs because; A microphone or sound source, like a computer, is being overloaded with sound. Regarding microphones, the microphone can't handle the volume level which it's detecting and thus distorts the sound that it's sending into the sound system. ... Thus, it sends out a distorted sound.

Is it possible that gluten can effect a person mentally more so than physically? I recently decided to give a gluten free diet a shot, and it seems like any sort of depression I’ve had over the past half decade has disappeared. I don’t wanna settle for it being placebo, because truly I feel amazing. I feel like I felt pre-college. In terms of the physical, though, I’ve also dealt with a lot of digestive issues over the years, which have seemed to subside.

Gluten affects me mentally and physically. I had brain fog so bad. I could not remember anything! The first week starting keto I cried because I thought of how awful I felt for thirty years. I also cried because of all of the people that are walking around feeling that awful and don’t even know it.

Gluten sensitivity means your body attacks the gluten if you’re slow to react, then it is absorbed into the brain, joints, muscles, etc and they are attacked instead of the gut as In celiac (fast reaction gluten sensitivity)

Been gluten free for 3 years now. I used to get chronic migraines that were disabilating to my daily life. 3 years ago I had cyclic vomiting syndrome and on a whim while sick I decided to leave out gluten when I was able to eat again. Since then I have not gotten a single migraine. I kept food journals for years to try and figure out if anything was triggering the migraines too. So I don't know if I'm gluten intolerant, sensitive or what. All I know is I never want to get those migraines again.

My naturopath told me to stop eating anything containing gluten, after about 3 months I had 2 pieces of pizza with regular flour, my stomach became bloated after eating just 2 pieces. Something I noticed after eating sandwiches prior to going gluten free, is that I would feel fuller than I should have after eating a relatively small sandwich. Going gluten free has helped lose about 15 pounds.

I've had red bumps on my arms all my life and I went on Keto and it started to clear up... I ate a piece of bread and the bumps didn't come back but it was only a little bread. Then a few weeks later I had a cheat day and had a lot of bread and the bumps came right back. I regret eating the bread for sure because it took forever for the bumps to go away the first time. At least now I learned to avoid wheat.

I was on a lightweight diet, not eating gluten and lactose, i've lost 1/6 of my body mass. I could breathe more normal, my allergies became less serious, my face wasn't swollen, I wasn't bloated, and I didn't have a 2 month gap between my periods. So, recently I've tested myself for the allergy, but didn't inform myself enough. I've been gluten free for 2 years and have been tested negative. Should I go test myself again, or just accept that I may not be allergic/intolerant to gluten?

My wife has this reaction to gluten. Within 10 minutes her face will fall like it has been paralyzed and she will have a massive headache. Most recently her lips will swell a bit and her tongue will feel funny. Then for the next three weeks she will have an uncontrollable urinary tract and kidney infection. Is this allergy or intolerance? Because it seems like allergy you me but yet the medical world calls it intolerance.

Beer? You could react to beer if you are sensible to gluten. I learned that the other day. Who knows if all alcoholic beverages from grains could produce the same effect in certain people. I red also that malt could produce the same reaction in some people.

In the process of testing for a gluten sensitivity. Only clue was testing positive for thyroid antibodies (~200 so not crazy high) which can be triggered by eating gluten. All other thyroid tests were normal. Never felt any different after eating gluten, never had heartburn TBH. Just 5 years of unexplained infertility despite having no health issues, being a healthy weight, and practicing healthy habits. The body is a mystery sometimes!
