Glue Compressor: Why You Should Apply It To Busses

If you're in a DAW like Ableton, you might have different options for compressors. One of these is the 'Glue Compressor' - but when would you actually use it?

    I like to think of the Glue compressor as adding a bit more movement than the standard compressor.

    The info on the Soft Clip is wrong, the soft clip feature does not “clip the sound before the compression”, it actually clips the sound after the compression, you can even use the soft clip without using the compressor section and you can feed it more volume by using the makeup gain dial. Also the dry/wet dial is after the soft clip so if you mix both the dry & wet signal sometimes your track can still go over zero.

    Glue works very nicely on bass when pushed to extremes.

    Nice presentation. Great tips. I'm looking forward to applying these techniques with a little more confidence now.

    Love the content you make Aden! I feel like I always come out knowing 100% more than I did before. Looking forward to the drum programming course already! Also, curious, what is "mix checker" on your master chain?

    I have a high pass, low pass and utility mapped to keyboard shortcuts so I can solo the lows, highs and check the mono compatibility. :)

    Great video! The glue compressor has a clip and the clean one doesn't have a clip button this makes the difference in the transparency that you hear from the regular compressor from the glue! (13:25) you finally turned it off also there is a knee on the clean and not on the glue another aspect that makes a difference as well. Love the content and videos! please keep making more! Have a great day and happy holidays and keep up the amazing work!

    Good video. I can hardly hear a difference between any of it. It's so subtle. As a visual artist it feels like, "We are going to use RGB 10, 33, 248. Okay let's dial in a 10, 33, 249. Wow you just killed it." Like yes, there is a difference, but it's SO subtle I'm wondering if the typical listener could possibly benefit. I am guessing your ears are way more trained, but I think that's my point - most people's aren't?

    It is my main compressor for almost anything (except vocals and drums), as I like the analog vibe and the few options speed up mixing decisions. Also it cant go that fast, which is good, because i tend to dial in my compressors too fast

    One small correction: The SoftClip Button softclips / limits the output not the input going in the comp :)

    Can I just ask? Why is it that on the glue compressor, when ratio is 2, threshold at 0.00db, the compressor still reacts?

  • @abbasahmedlp

    @abbasahmedlp

    Maybe it is emulating that the input signal is clipping!?

  • @richardchant7357

    @richardchant7357

    See, I thought that. But the sound I am using is -3db. You put the glue compressor on there, as soon as you set it to ratio 2, the needle moves. Change it to 4, and nothing happens. I read somewhere that built in the glue is a knee value. The knee value is higher when on a 2 ratio, which cause the compressor to react when there is no threshold applied. On ratio 10, it changes the knee to a lower amount.

    If the input signal is already at at 0dB, then it will react. You can test this by placing a Utility before the Glue Compressor and turning up/down the gain.

    What's the difference between adding it to a bus and changing the dry/wet amount on the track?

  • @EDMProd

    @EDMProd

    3 жыл бұрын

    Adding it to a bus means you can process all those instruments as one thing. You can use the dry/wet in any situation to blend in the uncompressed signal with the processed version. Note I'm not talking about sends here, in which case you'd use 100% wet on the return and send the drums to it.

    @@EDMProd Cheers appreciate the explanation! If I was to do this in an audio effect rack on a group & have 2 chains, one with compression and one not - would it be any different from using a bus?

  • @4bidn1

    @4bidn1

    @@OhMahGHarry Hey man, i'm sure you've already worked this out as it's been a month but, a 'Group' in Ableton is the same as a "bus" in a lot of other daws, they're just visually different as ableton hasn't tried to emulate old school technology (which used buses to process groups of audio at a time) So to answer your question, if the audio effect rack is on a group channel then it is on the bus, and you could achieve pretty similar results using 2 chains with the dry/wet on one of the chains set at 100% as you would just using the dry/wet on the compressor on the group(bus) itsself. The way you mentioned you would have slightly more control over MORE stuff (compression aside) but it is kinda over complicated compared to just slapping the glue compressor on the group and winding it in slowly. Different strokes for different folks, if it sounds good do it!

    A drum bus isn't a VST. It is a track to where you link all drums for easy effect applying on all drums at once.
