Well the roman empire did make some stupid mistakes from time to time, the battle of Cannae and Crassus disastrous march into Parthia for instance. The legionnares were however quite adept when it came to conquest and holding teritorry over extended periods of time.

@@Primal478 thats not the legionarries, thats the leadership. all the mistakes they made can clearly be reflected on leadership. cannae was no different but those were untrained troops quickly raised to halt hanibal. as for partha, horse archers dominated most of the world a few thousand years later so lets not be so harsh on them for not having a tactic against this threat. again however if the arogant general had moved slow and steady instead of cutting off his own supplies in a foolish invasion it might have gone very differently

I love how the legionnaires' helmets are covered in dust and they are singing cadence. The rhythm is very similar to a cadence I sang with soldiers when I was in the Army. Its probably the same one but adapted for the movie. Apparently people don't know if the Roman Legions sang cadence or not. And sadly, a Roman Eagle standard is not known to have survived.

A thing the movie gets wrong is the dust, romans kept their gear in incredibly pristine conditioned even on the march under pain of that one stick the centurion has. It's even said to have given away an ambush before because their shields and armour had shiny metal on them. they're too tarnished just for a desert march here, some dust would be great but not the level of caked on it is.

@@dillonhonore3579 An Aquilifer was a special type of signifer (standard bearer). Normal Signifers carried the eagle of their cohort/century, and this was already a special role/designation. The standards would have cohort/century awards and recognitions. An Aquilifer was the sole signifer in a Roman Legion to carry the Eagle of the Legion (standard for entire legion). Losing the eagle was considered a grave dishonor to everyone (Rome, the Legion itself, legionaries, and the commanders), and Aquilifers were often accompanied by veteran Legionary bodyguards.

@@dillonhonore3579 Samuel explained it nicely just to ad that the Aquila itself (Eagle) was a sacred symbol associated with Zeus and revered not only by the Legions but from all echelons of Roman society. Originally, in the Republican Era, it was just one amongst many military symbols (signa militaria) but after the Marian reforms it gained precedence. During the late Republic and the subsequent Imperial Age, the Aquila represented the power&glory of Rome projected wherever the Legions marched and loss of even a single standard in battle incurred great shame/lamentation but also extreme forms of retribution (example: the loss of three Eagles in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest and the campaign of revenge that led to two of the Eagles been regained leading to the Battle of Idistaviso)

Moreover, the lands they settled were Roman lands populated by Romans and so a lot of cultural assimilation took place since the natives outnumbered the migrants/invaders. They also were Christianised by the Eastern Romans and were Orthodox Christians, even the written slavic aka Cyrillic was given to them by the Romans (Saints Methodius and Cyril) 2. I once read about how while in war with Barbarian, they targeted the Aquilifer. Guess what happened? The Romans initially wanted to subjugated the villages and slaving them at worse (during this time, The roman Empire is giving free citizenship left and right). But since the Aquilifer (person who carry the banner) is dead and the banner fall to the ground. They literally slaughtered the entire village in revenge.

The fall of Rome is the saddest point of human history. A civilization centuries ahead of its neighbors, evolved in arts, literature, infrastructure, architecture, government, warfare, and just about everything else. Just think about how much further along we'd be if they hadn't collapsed, it took us more than half a millennia just to get on the tech level they had before they fell.

Right. In Britain, the tech-level after the fall of Rome sank under those of the celts. Londinium had about 500 citizens left, Rome ifself ca. 30.000 in the sixth century (from over a million!). it was not early medieval times, it was a Dark Age for sure.

Amen. Not on did civilization regress in the west (the Eastern Empire was doing just fine, still basking in the light of Rome) but it forever split Europe up into petty realms who wasted centuries squabbling over petty disputes. Once you could walk from the coast of northern Gaul to Egypt (minus a little trip across the Hellespont) and be in the same nation. All the while needing only 2 languages to be able to do so.

Medieval countries actually had to improve all the time, otherwise they risked lagging behind.

Point of Fact, Rule under Rome was better than the dark ages. Ask any Nonpartisan Archeologist. During Rome you have great houses with running water sewer systems paved streets pottery and advancements coming in fast, Post Roam nothing lasting, no righting no real advancements so great towns barley even hovels where sickness rules where sanitation is lacking. It's like Man kind stepped back a thousand years. Where did all the riches go, into the hands of those that called for Rome to fall, who suffered after? Not those that wanted it to fall but everyone else. Another FACT, not one single civilization was ever created that did not stand upon the bones of others. Victors make the History because they Earned that right. What happens if you allow the week to rule Mankind loses morals, ethics and sinks into darkness, Like now.

At that time Roman legionaries were equipped with Lorica Hamata, which was very expensive and time-consuming to produce. That's actually bad timing or bad directing even - just another mistake like the one where you see the army marching past houses barely reaching to their knees. The makers of this film wanted to present a spectacular chariot race, and in a way they did succeed in doing that, but there were a lot of other glitches in the movie. Just as the costuming - people at that time did not wear pants, at least not in that part of the world, and certainly women didn't. Yet there is one scene where you can see both Judah and Esther wearing pants...
