Glorious driven pheasants and partridges with Dan Thor

Спорт

Instagram star Dan Thor is a regular beater on the Brent Pelham shoot in Hertfordshire, but today he swaps his beating stick for his trusty Miroku, stoked up with Lyalvale Express steel cartridges, for a day on the peg. It’s a memorial day for his partner Shannon’s grandfather, and she is shooting too. Dan hasn’t drawn the best number, and after a thrilling first drive he’s out of the action. Meanwhile Shannon is in the hot seat, and buzzing after shooting four partridges for four shots - but how will Dan react to her success?

Why shoot game birds?
Game is wild, natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It is low in cholesterol and high in protein. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Both pheasant and partridge contain high levels of iron, protein, vitamin B(6) and selenium, which helps to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
In addition to the nutritional benefits of game, game shooting is worth £2 billion annually to the UK rural economy and supports 74,000 jobs. There are 480,000 (UK government figures) active game shooters in the UK who enjoy bird shooting under the principles of the Code of Good Shooting Practice.
More than 2 million hectares are actively managed for shooting in the UK creating proven (PACEC, 2014) conservation benefits and preserving important habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna, in particular farmland birds. UK shooting providers spend £5.4 million on cover crop seeds every year and maintain over 25,000ha of wild-bird cover.

as a non hunter who witnesses these hunts a few times a week, I have a couple of questions. Is there any aspect of this that is about managing the numbers? or is it purely for fun?

Thanks for this. It's not about managing numbers, because we put down the birds for shooting. It's a combination of wildlife conservation (shoots and gamekeepers do most wildlife conservation in the UK), it's about community, and it's about the economics of the countryside - and we enjoy it 🙂 - / Charlie

Some shoots are saying steel or other non lead shot or you cant shoot there and that includes Farmers who rent their land to shooters. If you want to keep your shoot then you abide by the land owners requests. sad but that's how it is
