Aug styr bayonet. Would not be used for cutting... militaries carry axes for that role. Knives are for stabbing and light cutting of things like rope, laces, etc. Not fuckin trees.

if you sharpen the Glock knife at a 20 degree angle, it cuts paper excellently. depending on the work, the angle should be ground. the larger the sharpening angle, the more robust the cutting edge. the ideal angle for me is 20-25 degrees all round. For hard work like batoning and slicing tomatoes for example

The teeth on the back were designed for foraging roots, making small notches and what not, not really for sawing through wood, as you would just be better off batoning through instead. There is definitely lots of fakes all over the internet. I’ve seen tests where they jab them into a tree and stand on them bouncing around without snapping. I believe they are made of spring steel with a 53-54 hardness if I recall correctly. It’s still essentially a bayonet.

Teeth on saws usually are bent out a little bit. This is called set. The overall width is called kerf, how wide your cut is going to be. With something like this, you actually wouldn't want any set, because it would negatively effect slicing, you would get hang ups on the saw teeth. Not something you really want on a knife, specially one this tall (edge to spine.) It could be improved by giving the blade a grind where the metal behind the saw teeth taper towards the edge everso slightly (doesnt need to be much), that should allow you to saw more effectively. However, these teeth were made for cutting tree roots if I'm not mistaken, so that's why they're not so good for cutting branches.

Had the was it FM78 or whatever the older variant without the saw edge was during my time in the military, it was good for throwing into trees when bored and cooking, that's about it. Couldn't hold an edge worth shit, instantly went dull the moment you cut anything tougher than tissue, even MRE packs could prove difficult for it and you'd end up ripping them open instead of cleanly cutting them open. Now I've thrown it into a tree stump on my lot and it's been sticking up from the stump for a good couple of years now, makes an okay lawn ornament I guess, but it's still a shitty knife. And before you start going on about how it's a bayonet and not a knife, why is it called a "field knife" then? The russians did bayonets that doubled as a good knife, so did the americans.

Honest question, is the saw(on most survival knives) truly meant for sawing through material or is it just to facilitate notching or making a little groove for lashing or something? I've always wondered what the original philosophy of use was. It's been replicated so many times that i wonder if it lost its meaning or if its purely aesthetic.

I use it since 10 years to digg between rocks when I go metal detecting. At least, it is very balanced and easy to use as a throwing knife .for the price of just 40 € I think it's worth it.

Whenever someone sees a sawback fail on my channel, they immediately make up a completely different purpose for sawteeth. I think I have heard them all by now, but noone has ever backed up thier claims. Also, noone has ever listed any REAL reasons saw teeth were added to military knives…. @@calculatedsurvival Hey, the backside works good enough to cut fresh roots, or to produce wood chips to start a campfire. The steel is produced by the company Böhler. The technical description is called SAE1095 and it has a 55 HRC ( Rockwell ) . I looked at Wikipedia and they write that the Army will get it without a serrated backside, so I was wrong but I heard it a lot of times that the serrated backside is made to tear wounds. I work in a outdoor store and we have a lot of soldiers buy from us. When you join the Austrian Army as a newbie you get the knife unsharpened ( maybe they drink to much beer and they wanna avoid accidental injuries I guess 🤭) the knife is official used by the Luxembourg Palace guard, the Dansk Army Force, the German GSG 9 anti terrorist unit, the national guard of India, that Police of Malaysia, the polish milltary police, the Chinese Army and th south Korea special mission battalion so as Chuck Norris ( Joke ) and a lot of outdoor people.

I’ve owned one for a few years, it’s on my hip daily. I’ve beaten it to hell and back. It’s a stout durable knife for the $35 I paid for it.

I've got one. He's actually right. Maybe OK as a bayonet, or bottle opener, but as a field knife? I don't think so... 😢

" Do not attempt without proper training " my guy, it's a knife, if anyone over the age of 15 needs training to use a knife, then that person shouldn't own a knife.

So I'm pretty sure now there's quality control issues with these because I've thrown mine and beat it and put that knife through hell we were throwing it the wrong way making sure the handle struck the tree then we did the tip retention like you did and my knife is fine also mine come razor a sharp it was capable of Shaving we bitonte with it on one camping trip. The Edge retention was still there it would pop hairs but not shave as well as it used to but the edge was restored quite easily. After watching your video I probably will not recommend this knife to my buddies anymore

That's why I hate the gimmick of straight edge blades having saws on part of them; The length of the saw part is usually so small you can't really cut anything decent with it and the Area where the rest of the straight edge is, in order to not catch the saw blade, You have to hold it in awkward angle. My belief is if you have a normal v edge blade that's sharp enough, then it can cut through most anything. If you need a saw, then buy a saw. If you need a knife, then buy a knife. If you need both, Buy a Leatherman or similar quality multi tool. But hey, that's just my opinion.

The wood saw on the surge is about the same length as this saw. So there wouldn't be much advantage for the Leatherman other than it can fold. But yes you absolutely should buy a Leatherman first.
