Global aphasia in a patient - learn with example | stroke
Global aphasia is the most severe of all types of aphasia.
This aphasia is usually associated with a large lesion in the perisylvian language area
or separate lesions destroying both the PIF and PST regions.
It is most commonly the result of a stroke in the middle cerebral artery
that supplies blood to the lateral surface of the left hemisphere of the brain.
It is usually associated with hemiplegia/hemiparesis.
There is significant impairment across all aspects of language I.e Speech
*Comprehension
*Repetition
*Naming
*Reading
*Writing
The person usually is mute or uses repetitive vocalization.
Grossly nonfluent speech is combined with a severe comprehension deficit and
inability to name or repeat.
