Glen Campbell & Donny Osmond Sing "Phoenix" & more

Ойын-сауық

From 1984, Glen Campbell & Donny Osmond sing a little bit of Jimmy Webb's “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” on a British morning show, talk about growing up in big families, the challenges of being a solo act compared to being part of a group, and more; Donny has some fun with the weather map and the weather girl, and the show wraps up with Glen leading everyone in singing “Walk Right In”.

At 68yrs old i've seen many great musicians. Personally , i believe Glen is one of the greatest guitarists ever recorded. But because of his great vocals people naturally focused on his singing. He was a session musician who couldn't read or write music. One of a kind.

Chance meeting with Donny: Circa 1980, I was an engineer at at Chicago TV station. One morning, he was alone in the studio hallway quietly waiting to appear on our morning show. I was pushing an oscilloscope cart down the hall, and nodded respectfully to him as I passed. About one step after I passed him he said: "Is that a Tektronix 465 scope?" I replied, "Yes it is, I can't believe you recognize it". He said "I have one at home in Utah". He told me he loves electronics as a hobby and enjoys relaxing at home building small electronic projects. We talked a little about the kind of electronics he liked and what he was building. Just then, he was called into the studio and we said goodbye. He was a really nice and down to earth guy. Years pass, I move to Los Angeles and work in engineering at the TV studio complex where the ABC-TV "Donny and Marie Show" was produced. Some of my co-workers worked on that show. One day at work, I mentioned my chance meeting with Donny in Chicago, and asked "Did you guys know electronics was his hobby?" They knew well. Donny was friends with several engineers and was a frequent and welcome guest in the engineering shop. One of the guys was kind of his mentor in electronics. All who knew him liked him and spoke well of him.

Donny wearing pink socks.... courage. I respect and love Glen when he first played and let Donny sing that he took it slow and adjusted to help him and not show him up. Donny was wonderful. No Hollywood Big Head for Donny nor Glen, just two talented people.

What Glen says about Jimmy is right...When you listen to Paul Gauguin...it's incredible how he follows that chord progression through the song. I worked with him once in Dallas and was in tears a number of times when I got to listen to him play the piano...he is complete genius.

I saw Donnie and Marie perform their Christmas show in Phoenix a few years back. Mohammad Ali was there. Donny jumped down in the audience to greet him and he waved to the crowd. I’m yelling this: IT WAS THE MOST AMAZING SHOW EVER!!!! Donnie and Marie were incredible. I do not know how Donnie did the things he did. He’s my age for goodness sake. He was running around and dancing like a teenager. My mother-in-law was the realtor for Glen Campbell’s mother in Sun City. She drove us by her house. Many moons ago. LOL.

I love how much Donny's son, Chris (Christopher), who is a great singer and musician in his own right, looks just like his father, RIGHT NOW, just so much like his dad does back in this clip back then! I've personally met Donny, his amazing wife, Debbie, and most of his wonderful sons. He and his family are are truly the kindest people anyone could ever (hope or dream to) have pleasure to meet.

Really great to hear Glen play that guitar. I had a chance to go to his concert at the P.N.E. Fair a little while back. You can really see his personality come out on this interview and Donny's too. Both so funny naturally and talented. I know After this Donny went on to be a Game show host.

Someone said this was a bad interview??? They're at ease, happy, some never heard insight..,and the two songs, done like they've not been heard before. I'm playing well over 40 yrs and I could never be as relaxed and natural as they are. They've got a gift I'll never have and will always envy.

They're so at ease and relaxed because they were born to be entertainers. We know Donny started at age 5 and I think Glen started out in show business fairly young also. Being in front of a camera is second nature to them. They're both confident guys who know just how damn good they are.

I agree. It's, by far, my favourite interview. Everyone's so chill and relaxed. Also, I love the friendship and the musical (vocal) chemistry between Donny and Glen here. Not only are they talented but they also seem like very down-to-earth guys. Being a millenial, I didn't grow up listening to the Osmonds or watching their show. In fact, I knew very little (next to nothing) about them (not even the bit about Donny singing on one of my fav Disney movie soundtracks (Mulan)) until a year or two ago. But, I did grow up listening to Glen Campbell (thanks to my dad) and I remember falling in love with his voice the first time I heard him sing Both Sides Now and Wichita Lineman. Now both dudes are up there on my list of top vocalists.
