GLEAMING THE CUBE: Tony Hawk, Bones Brigade, Christian Slater skating BTS (1988)

Hi Tony! This is everything I found. Apologies for not editing it down, but I thought the raw footage might be more fun for you guys to go through?? Enjoy! The pizza hut truck cresting the hill is my favorite shot in any movie ever so I was SO excited to find this.
For anyone else watching this... My dad, Michael Tolkin, wrote the classic skater movie Gleaming the Cube. We recently digitized our home movies, and buried between incredibly boring recordings of things like my sister's piano recital and cousin's birthday party, I stumbled upon a holy grail I didn't even know existed- 40 minutes of behind the scenes footage my dad took on set. I FREAKED OUT (I love this movie so much, it's just so fun) and put a short clip up on twitter. Tony Hawk somehow saw the tweet, got nearly as stoked as I was, let me know he showed it to the rest of the crew, and asked who shot it. I let him know my Dad was the cameraman (not on the movie, just as a writer on set having fun), and asked if he'd be interested in taking a look at the full unedited version. He said yes, I got permission from my pops, and here we are!
I'm sure most of you made your way here after seeing the highlight reel Tony put up on his instagram, but if you happened to find this via youtube or some other algorithm and haven't seen Tony's edit yet-- check it out ASAP, it's fantastic!!! / c1irqusppnt
Since way more people saw this than I ever expected and seem to be enjoying all things BTS on GTC, here are a few more fun photos and props/merch my dad kept!
A sweet pic of my dad and Tony when they ran into each other last year and had a little surprise GTC reunion: x.com/EmmaTolkin/status/15285...
The sickest crew jacket of all time (also the second pic in the thread is Christian Slater on set): x.com/EmmaTolkin/status/16519...
A Powell Peralta board from set signed by Mike McGill that I very stupidly would roll around on as a little kid (as in I'd literally just sit on it and ram into things, I didn't skate) because I had no idea how much of a treasure it was 😬: / 1
EDIT: I initially had 1989 in the video title but some people in the comments pointed out it would make more sense to put the year the footage was shot, not the year the movie was released. And they were correct. Amended!
I haven't identified everyone (or even watched all of this through!) but according to Wikipedia "The skating technical advisor for the film was original Z-Boy Stacy Peralta. Among the skateboarders who appear in the film as stunt skaters are Mike McGill, Mark "Gator" Rogowski, Rodney Mullen, Rich Dunlop, Eric Dressen, Lance Mountain, Mike Vallely, Chris Black, Ted Ehr, Natas Kaupas, Chris Borst, and Steve Saiz. Tony Hawk (Buddy) and Tommy Guerrero (Sam), then members of the Bones Brigade, appear in the film as members of Brian's skate crew. Christian Jacobs, future lead singer of The Aquabats and creator of Yo Gabba Gabba!, also appears in the film as Gremic."
Stunt skaters from IMDB: Bobby Bass, Chris Black, Simone Boisseree, Chris Borst, Bobby Burns, Clarke Coleman, Jeff Dashnaw, Gary Davis, Steve Davison, Tim Davison, Eric Dressen, Rich Dunlap, Ted Ehr, Tom Elliott, David Ellis, Richard Ellis, Freddie Hice, Buddy Joe Hooke, Norman Howell, Tommy Huff, Jeff Imada, Natas Kaupas, Ed Lang, Craig Lietzke, Mike McGill, John Meier, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, Stacy Peralta, Chad Randall, Kristyn Randall, Cyndi Lee Rice, Mark 'Gator' Rogowski, Steve Saiz, Oliver Theess, Mike Vallely, Dick Ziker, Carey Loftin, Shawn Odum
Uhhh do keywords go here so people can find this? Hm. Skateboard skater skating 1980s 80s pizza hut truck thrasher thrashin eighties skate tricks pool pools orange county x games filmmaking filmmaker shot on film 80s fashion thriller drama nostalgia southern california... I don't know man. lol.

This movie created many sleepovers. If it played in the morning on HBO it would play again in the afternoon. A poor mom would have 10 boards on her front porch and a bunch of animals in her house demanding Pizza Hut waiting for it to start. And don't get me started if we weren't offered the new set of Noid shades 😂

Edit: The closeup of Tony in the truck is the thing I remember the most from watching this movie when I was younger. That and I always wondered why the Brian's a "fuck up" lines were changed to "screw up". I guess to get a PG-13 rating?
