Jfyi: Glay is a Japanese rock band formed in 1988. They were originally a visual-kei band, but the group has shifted to less dramatic attire through the years. Their 1997 compilation album Review is the fifth best-selling album of all time in Japan. Their July 1999 concert was the largest ticketed concert ever held by a single act at the time. This song is the opening to the shojo anime “Kaikan Phrase”. They’ve also done ops and eds for the shonen anime series Ace of diamond. Glay was produced by Yoshiki, who is the leader/drummer/pianist of the band X JAPAN. They were at the peak of their popularity in the late 90s, but they’re still active today and have a core fan base.

@@Ali-Britco from what I’ve heard this video came out in 1999
This music video was made by a group of about five guys, all of whom worked on Akira as well as whole bunch of massive shows and movies individually. The Director, Kouji Morimoto was the Assistant Animation Director on Akira, did Key Animation Fist of the North Star, Urusei Yatsura, Ashita no Joe, as well being the Director of the Magnetic Rose portion of Memories (1995). That's not getting to all the stuff the other guys worked on. It's no wonder this music video's so good.

Glay is great. Other bands or artists in a similar genre would be Gackt, B'z, and some songs of T.M.Revolution. Koshi Inaba (lead singer for B'z) went solo at some point and did some good stuff on his own as well. So many great groups around that time that hearing any one of their songs takes me right back to when I started college and met someone who introduced me to the J-Rock genre.

I’m also a college student at the moment, from the USA. I’m actually traveling to Japan soon, so I’m curious about what you meant in your comment. How has Japan changed between the two “eras” you mentioned? Is life harder or easier now? I’d be interested to hear your response! I hope Google has a “translate to Japanese” feature for my comment when you read it, the way your comment has a “translate to English” button for me when I read it. I’m interested in understanding how Japan’s youth feel about their country and the outside world. Asking this type of question in person when I’m visiting will be hard, I still need to learn to speak Japanese if I want to ask about topics like this… 😅

This video was made around May 1999. I was 20 at the time and remember it very well. I was very impressed with the quality of the animation. Then I remembered Ken Ishii's "extra", which was made four years before 1999, at that time. The MV of "extra" was also very high quality. But it wasn't common. It was popular in the substream culture world. Anime MVs like this one are rare in the world of pop culture. I thought animation had become more popular. At the time, when I was watching this video, I thought, ``Will there come a time in the future when I remember this day in 1999?'' At that time, I was lying in my room and thinking. A B&W Macintosh G3 was on my desk. I bought a dream machine on my desk, I thought. I thought "I can do something" until I bought it. However, after I bought it, I learned that the purpose was to get it. I realized that I couldn't do anything, I couldn't be anything. It was the song that was playing at that time.

wow, this is beautiful. i really resonate with the character in this video. sometimes we go through life feeling like we dont even exist...But then something reminds us of who we are, how we are real. We are a part of this whole world. Then we come back awake again, ready to live life, to play the game. I like the song too, although i dont know whats being said 😅

Ikr me too! I also sometimes don't feel real, like I'm not living in moment. A change of mindset helped with those feelings though. Occasionally I am also reminded somehow, I come up with a realization that kind of "wakes" me up. Also the song is a banger.

Its been about 25 years. I had a pen pal in Japan, and she would tell me all about her favorite band at the time. Glay. Now it's on my recommended feed. I had completely forgotten it.
I can't believe I've never heard or seen this. This looks like they got a certain animator out of retirement just to animate this. Time to listen to all of GLAY now

Morimoto was basically at his peak between 1999 and the late '00s - his later shorts "Beyond" and "Dimension Bomb" take this video's basic vibe and run wild with them

@@gregorysteffensen3279 I love to see Morimoto's MV of Ken Ishii's MV and Ayumi Hamazaki's "Connected" MV.
This is such a 2000s style of anime animation. It's kind of a bummer they stopped doing it, but it makes sense given the amount of animation effort necessary to make it look that good.
