When you 1st dip the ink in the water to clean it and say it's the most satisfying part, I swear I saw a Angel shape form in the water just before you cut back to drawing on the paper..soo cool

The "pear shape" pen is supposed to be an ultra fine tip, but if you buy low quality products you will get a thicker line. The difference is very noticeable, and the fine liner is actually a ton of fun to use. Some things I wish I had learned *before* I bought my first glass dip pen: 1. I wish I had known that there were shops near me which had these pens and that they encourage you to try the pen before you buy them. Check out nerd stores, cosplay shops, random mall toy shops have them sometimes, usually with a small station with paper, ink, and a dip pen for you to try. The feel of a pen is very important for the process. 2. I wish I had known that the ink for dip pens is designed to be customizable. If your ink is "too thick," dump some into a bottle cap and add 3 or 4 drops of water or even just dip your pen in hot water before you dip it in the ink. (Use a separate vessel to keep your ink supply becoming runny over time) If it's too runny, leave the cap off it overnight and shake it up in the morning. 3. I wish I had known that the paper you use makes a huge difference. If you're drawing with the pen, you want something that can absorb a water color ink quickly. If you're writing with the pen, you want something that a thicker writing ink will sit on top of for a short period before it soaks in. 4. The long, skinny pens with a twist are great for writing because they hold a ton of ink. You can nearly fill a whole standard journal page with one dip in writing ink. The short, fat pens are also good for writing, but you can accomplish significantly finer detail with the short, fat pen. The difference is like using a fine tip sharpie vs. a bold tip sharpie, but on a smaller scale. 5. The glass used to make the pens (If it's of high quality) is very durable, but it is not resistant to bending or impacts. Use a light grip, and set specific rules for when you're holding your pen to prevent breaking it. Mine are to never touch anything but paper and ink with the tip and if I'm doing anything other than drawing or dipping, I set the pen down on its stand. I've never broken a pen before, but my friend has broken one of mine while I let her try it. She is a digital artist and made a mistake, then in her excited mood, waved her hand around as if to motion, "If I could just select this, and drag it up, that's no longer a mistake, it's exactly what I meant to do," and she accidentally smacked the tip on the edge of the table. Remember that part of the joy of glass pens is the meditative aspect you gain from having to be totally present in what you're doing.

I was thinking about paper for ink pens and dip pens and I thought about when I was at school in the 60s and 70s when we always used ink pens. We used to use Silvine exercise books which are still available in the UK. I managed to get hold of a stash of them and they are still great: the ink doesn't bleed though the paper is quite thin so if it is a dark ink it can show through to the other side. They are great for practice.

Thank you so much - this video was exactly what I needed! I purchased a glass pen through eBay, but I haven’t used it yet. I want to use watercolor to sign my watercolor paintings, because I read that if you use regular ink to sign, then the piece is technically “mixed media.” I prefer to have it entirely in watercolor, but was having trouble signing with a brush. Your video was very helpful, and I will be practicing with my new glass pen. You also have a very sweet and comforting voice! I am a new sub. 😊💕🌸

I love the pear-shaped pen, I think the tip looks so much more elegant and so does the pen part. I was playing a game on Facebook when one of the ads was of a glass pan and I I have never seen a glass pain like that before and I was just fascinated with it! But I saw it was almost $30, and I was thinking Jane, I don't know if I spend that much on a pen with my budget. But I wanted to see people in action with it on KZread, and found out apparently I can get them for a lot less and from companies I'm already familiar with and know I can trust.

I’m not sure if you’ve ever watched Russian cursive being written but having done it for classes makes this feel a little more comfortable because it’s very common to pick up the pen between letters. Handwriting is very important for handwritten Russian so this brings me back to that. :)

Hi Sarah, I just purchased my first glass dip pen off Amazon, with 4 inks. Very inexpensive, and a “swirl”design. Very smooth (which I didn’t expect) & writes about a 1/2 page with several of my fountain pen inks with 1 dip. {I didn’t try the 4 inks that came with it yet...}. I got it to be able to change inks a tad bit easier than with a fountain pen when I wanted to do “ink color” swatches. Your video was very helpful though, and I’m going to check them out more. Thanks for the very informative demonstrations.👍😎🤠👨‍🦳

Recently got a glass pen. Now if I can just figure out how to leech off excess ink before I start writing. I don't know if my issue is the ink itself, which came with the pen, or if it is the tip of the pen itself. Regardless, it's a lot of fun experimenting with it. Hope to get better soon.

I know this is old, but I am about to buy some glass pens and I would like to ask you - Have you used tomoe river paper on this? (that's my fav paper to use with my fountain pens) or Clairefontaine triomphe ?? Also, if you want to get some very very interesting inks to play with you can always use a color that you like and add a little of mica powder (i use pearl colors to add shimmer to some of my inks, and they work great in both my dip pens and fountain pens)

To truly enjoy the art of writing with a glass dip pen, get yourself an inkwell. The constant dipping from a bottle, whereby you have to continously hold with another hand, takes away from the writing experience. Ebay has a variety of inkwells ranging from 20 bucks and leading to over 500! Believe me, the joy of writing for me enhanced with an inkwell and I believe any one who uses one, will experience such joys also.

Hello Miss, I collect fountain pens, the cheapies, Safari, Jinhou, metropolitan, twisbi, etc. I have Noodlers Fountain pen ink. Would this be acceptable for glass pens? Or. Might it clog up the grooves?

Just an fyi. Tuesday Morning gets these pens in kits often for 6.99 - 8.99. The kit comes with a pen & sm. container of ink in a cute box.

Loved your voice, loved your lettering, loved your delight watching the pen get clean. I saw the suggestion somewhere to use a plastic bowl for cleaning so a person would be less likely to accidentally break the tip. Is fountain pen ink the same as watercolor ink?

Ooh that’s a great idea to use a plastic bowl for cleaning! Fountain pen ink would work for a glass pen but you might have to add a little water to get the right consistency. 👍

@@EnsignInsights I play around with fountain pen inks and the dip pen works fairly well, but does not seem to hold has much ink as your watercolor ink does in the video. I need to use a plastic bowl; I have a fear of breaking the tip, but I, too, love swishing it around in the water. But I like the effect of the ink in the glass. So have not got the plastic yet.

    1. Don't drop it 2. Keep them away from your children 3. Don't bang on the side of your ink bottle or inkwell after you dip the pen...tap it. 4. Either, keep the box it comes in and use that as a holder when you aren't writing, OR, find a sturdy, tall cup or mug, and use it for a pen holder, just store the pen, nib side up. They're a lot more sturdy to use than they might seem, even though they're glass. I love using one for writing, they are so, so comfortable to hold, and so smooth to write with. If you have an interest, they are well worth trying.

So, does the length of the nib decide on how long the ink will last without dipping again? Or does it work the same for both?

  • @YodaWasSith

    @YodaWasSith

    Жыл бұрын

The length does make a difference. The short fat pear shaped one holds less ink but has a finer writing tip. The long, skinny, twisted tip holds more ink but has a bolder writing tip. I can fill a standard notebook page with about a dip or two of the bold tip and 3 or 4 with the fine tip.

Will a glass dip pen work well for signing art on watercolour cold press paper or will it skip? I tried using a Fine Line Painting Pen but it skips on cold press paper.

That’s a good question I’m not sure! But I think it would be a little bumpy in the texture of the paper. I’ve noticed that I normally want a slightly thicker point when going over the texture of watercolor paper. But it depends on the look you’re going for!

I don’t think there is a good way to repair the tip! Because even if you glue it there will be a crack which might make the ink come off in globs. I would get a new one!

sanding can work, if it breaks more than a tiny bit though you can reach out to a flameworker! Flame repaired nib will always leave you with a smoother stroke than a sanded nib

Would it be possible to video chat with me? I have a Cross fountain pen that needs to be cleaned before switching colors. I unscrewed all the pieces but the pen base won't screw all the way back in. I haven't even started the cleaning process and I have managed to mess it up. I am new with using dip and fountain pens and need a little guidance. At least Cross has a lifetime warranty on their pens! Have to say the warranty they provide has come in handy! LOL Thank you so much!

In the US, I see several from $13 - $20 USD. You can spend a lot more, if you want to, but the difference seems to be only for the color or appearance, as a pen, there doesn't seem to be a difference in how the pen works.
