I never tire of seeing these photos Colin. Seeing the 105 tram at 5.26 heading to Hampden garage reminds me of the lovely Art Deco building at that depot. Gone now but something that we would have saved today. There used to be a photo of it online but I just can't find it anymore.

So many beautiful buildings swept away in the name of progress.

Colin, I am running out of "ink" for the great big ticks - here's another one! Loved it all, especially the trolleybuses in Glassford Street. The children on Glasgow Green with no shoes made me think of my father. His widowed mother could not afford shoes and he was was teased relentlessly at school, so he "plunked" . He was sent to borstal (I kid you not) on the sailing ship HMS MARS on Tayside in 1916.

Thanks TODD, interesting facts about your dad, hard times. I think we're heading back there.

Colin, Thanks for your response. Lots of poverty in those days -even today. Even having shoes did not make you one of the elite - merely placed you on a "sliding scale". I always thought justice was supposed to be tempered with mercy. Think of people transported for minor offences. Imagine the terror of a young person torn from family and friends for a trivial offence and facing the unknown in a land so far away.

I said 'hard times', I should have said 'brutal times'. My dad was brought up in the Gorbals (1920s - 1930s). There was one boy in his class who didn't have shoes, he would put his feet up on his desk and teacher would through the heavy wooden duster at him. My mum had to wear 'parish shoes', old shoes supplied by the church, and always remembered the embarrassment.

Sobering and disturbing reflections. At school in Springburn in the 1950s, one woman teacher (the assistant head if I recollect) was notorious for "throwing". One of the gym teachers used to abuse pupils wearing glasses, calling them "four eyes" and he himself wore glasses! Anyway, keep up the good work giving us oldies something to look forward to.
