Glarry GT604 Acoustic Guitar - A Bargain???

Музыка

Finally getting a chance to check out a Glarry acoustic, which you can see all over the internet for very cheap. This is the Spruce/Rosewood dreadnought - GT604 - but is it a bargain?

I have the cheap 502 model you can sand with 1500 sandpaper and buff these guitars and they look a lot better and feel a lot better. They do not need a refinish.

Hi FlowForth, I'm loving that black guitar I bought from you, last year and really appreciate your efforts! I wanted to buy the other three, as well (the 2 sunburst and the plain top) but ran out of money. I've purchased 7 of the GT3/5XX series the last couple years and absolutely love the colors and sweet sounds from them. However, one was so horrible that I forced a full refund. The other 6 are mostly unusable but have great promise and I'm giving each one a full roman. On my current one, for example, I'm also lifting some frets and re-forming them. I'll probably keep one because they sound so good and sell the others to students & teachers who'll want an exceptionally easy to play model, as the typical stuff advertised as "great for beginners" is almost always junk and will hinder any but the most ambitious of learners. I'm in doubt of a couple reviews (not all) where they claim to have a fine player from Glarry and glad that you're giving an honest one. I think they're good deals for someone experienced to work on them and now I want to try a 6XX! To the other posters: Thanks for your tips & observations! :) Gene

Thanks Gene, Nice to hear from you - and especially about your exploits with these guitars. You're right - these are only good deals for someone willing to do some set up work. Cheers.

Yep. If you watch my videos you will note that I review dozens of guitars at this price point. Some of which are easy to find - and others a little harder. I think it's worth noting the differences between them. I did note some good things - and the fact that I might have got a sub-standard one. Thanks for watching.

I have the same guitar and had exactly the same experience as you did. I did take the trouble to strip it down and put on 4 thin coats of Deft satin lacquer (About $5.99 at Home Depot). Only took a light sanding with 400 grit to prepare the surface and about 35 to 40 minutes. I let it dry overnight and polished it up. I think it is worth the effort. It looks much much better. The rosewood in particular really pops now. I also found the frets to be pretty uneven so I leveled them as well. This allowed me to set the action pretty low and it plays very well up and down the neck. I think this guitar is a bargain, but only for the right type of buyer. That is, someone who knows what they are getting, and is willing to either spend the money or time to get it set up properly. I think anyone watching this video will get a very accurate picture of this guitar. Thanks for all you efforts.

Thanks for sharing - I can see how what you did would improve the guitar a lot. Did you spray the Deft - or brush it on? I got lucky with the necks on both the ones I got. The frets just needed a bit of dressing after the truss-rod and action adjustments.

@@FlowforthInstruments I just sprayed it on. I find the Deft lacquer does on really well, and the satin is even more forgiving. The fret ends on my guitar were actually pretty good. No sharp ends at all. I also put in a Cherub GT6 pickup which has built-in reverb and chorus effects. It's an amazing pickup for less than $30.

Patrick Dinsmore I have a Gt604 coming next week. I don't mind doing a little finishing on it either. I had planned on it actually. You are still getting an acoustic with THAT MUCH ROSEWOOD in it for under $100. I think it's neat to see Rosewood used for more than the usual fretboard and bridge.

  • @KY_Bob

    @KY_Bob

Patrick Dinsmore one question though. In what way did you find was the best way to cover the fretboard before finishing? I plan on finishing everything except for the fretboard and bridge contact points. I won't finish the neck either. I plan on using Tung Oil on that like I have in the past. I will also remove tuners and swap for an old set of 3x3 Grovers that I have laying around as well.

  • @555patrickd

@@KY_Bob I just covered the fretboard with masking tape. It takes a bit of time but it works great. I put finish on the bridge and neck as well. I find the satin lacquer gives a real nice feel and doesn't get sticky at all. After removing the tape from the fretboard I used tru-oil on it. You do need to let it dry, but I find it works really well, and gives the fretboard a darker, richer look. And it adds moisture to the fretboard, as well. Good luck with your project. It sounds like it will be a pretty nice guitar after you're finished.

Please comment about the wood: which parts are laminated and which are unlaminated. Guitars under $100 are usually all laminated wood. Mid-price guitars often have a front of unlaminated spruce with sides and back of laminated wood. Guitars entirely of unlaminated wood are best, all else equal. Glarry told me they are not sure about the construction. Unlaminated has better tone than laminated wood.

  • @FlowforthInstruments

At this price it's laminate mate. I am fairly thorough in my discussion of woods in my guitar reviews. Thanks for watching.

I do that with every set up. Lemon oil won't fix a lot of the problems I've had with Glarry acoustics. Some of them are ok - but a lot of lemons.

I’m astounded at all the people commenting that you’re “whining” about the guitar. I suppose if you didn’t point out these flaws you would be called a “shill” for Glarry. You are absolutely right that there are other options for around 100 dollars that it SHOULD be compared to. Good work.
