Glaring disparities remain in NYC specialized public high schools

The acceptance letters are in for New York City's coveted specialized public high schools, and the disparities remain glaring. Now, the City Council wants to take on the issue by focusing on test preparation. CBS2's Aundrea Cline-Thomas has more on the effort to level the playing field.

Parents, turn off the tv and take the phones for one hour every day and have your kids read and do math. Do this every day until they finish high school. This is what good parents do.

I graduated from bx. Science. There are blacks and Latino students that get admitted to bx science. These black and Latino students came from 2 parents families that value education…the black students families were from the Caribbean islands countries like Haiti or African countries like Senegal etc.

I really think it’s wrong that people don’t discriminate when admitting students to schools. School admission staff should discriminate based on race. (Sarcasm)

Nothing will work unless the parents are involved but the problem is most minorities such as black and Hispanic come from a single parent home

Most minorities are raised in a single mom household. It's not the DOE fault that mothers choose to be single parents, which leaves their young disenfranchised.

Being in a single mom household has absolutely no corolation. At the end of the day, its whether or not that specific family is putting presure on their children to excell in school. Most black/latino family culture just isnt oriented around good grades. Unlike many Asian and white families who are pushing their kids to do well in school. Which is the main reason for underpreformance in certain communities.

What disparities? Perhaps that group is less intelligent. My suggestion is to make breathing the only qualifications you need to get into any school you want. They can do that without a problem, can't they?

There's only 1 solution to solve the problem.... all schools should be abolished and only 1 centralized school should exist that serves different groups of people based on where they lived.... ALL lectures are pre recorded and teachers simply are there to answer questions as students learn and go at their own pace and pick topics that both interests them but gives them a good education

It's called teaching the test, i.e., cheating. Test prep for all or none.

It's too late to do that for 9th graders.... it should be we all attend the same school and you learn at your own pace
