This is my very first time EVER seeing this clip...and I applaud Ms. Knight on that beautiful rendition of Jennifer Holliday's song. The mood and the tone are exactly what the song was meant to have. Not taking NOT ONE NOTE, PITCH, TONE OR KEY away from Jennifer's way of delivering the song because Jennifer put her stank on it and sealed it up to be unmatched. But Gladys simply made it sound like a torched love song... I LOVED IT.

She's absolutely the most amazing in this world no woman can sing that song after her. They can try and maybe even hold a note as long but they will never be her or sound better

Gladys Knight always brings it home. And she has perfect control at all times. Songs don't get out of hand as they do with so many singers. Gladys Knight is just a "PRO"

This is what it's like when a singer has a really good understanding of music, melody, lyrics and context. Gladys knows how to handle a song that is highly associated with a particular singer and a particular musical. Dreamgirls was still touring in 1985. It was still in the public consciousness. Gladys sang it in an original way, but also in a way made sense for the audience. I don't imagine an America's Idol contestant would treat this song as anything but a vocal showcase for uncontrolled vocal riffs. Gladys isn't my personal favorite R&B singer, but I see her many strengths. Definitely one of the greats.

Several things strike me about this song. Gladys Knight killed it, of course, but since everyone has documented that well enough in the comments, I want to focus on the song itself. Honestly. When was the last time you heard a major song release where the story was about actual, real love? Not hooking up. Not sex. Not some stupid, superficial emotional appeal. Not "Woe is me, you did me wrong." Actual, real, broke-down, defining the very word, love. No one writes this stuff anymore.

Correct me if I'm wrong please but...........Gladys Knight was in Detroit with Motown in 1967 when Florence Ballard was imploding and eventually being fired from The Supremes. Of all the female vocalists there at the time who knew what what going on behind the scenes, she was.....and clearly is.......the best singer of them all who witnessed that moment and could bring the passion and history to a rendition of the song that rival's Jennifer Holliday's version, which was based on a fictional character that everyone believes was based on Flo. That is why Gladys' version is beyond incredible.

Really? It's from a BROADWAY ORIGINAL CAST ALBUM. They were threatening to use Gladys to sing on the original cast album or just on the single version of the song? Most Broadway cast albums don't have a single but this one did and it was #1 on the R&B charts.

@@aze2252 lol. I felt no containment from jennifer. It was like a nuclear bomb dropped. I remember it played on the radio as a kid and I literally fell of the bed with goose bumps as she went in. I do like how she restrained and was soft in the beginning and then went crazy. It made that song classic.
