It's weird, I've just watched this and had a flashback, this was the very first episode I watched of gladiators as a kid

I've never forgotten Gladiators. John Anderson is 90 now.

In terms of **making contact** with the paper, the guy in white by mere hundredths of a second (you see his Gladiators paper bulge ever so slightly before). However, in terms of **ripping** the paper, it was a dead heat (clearly the guy on the right, approaching foot first, came at it with a better aim). Therefore, dead heat is the right decision.

It was really close but not sure why they had so much trouble after watching all the angles. The guy in white clearly breaks through the barrier a split second before the other guy. Quite easy to spot in slow motion

So I tried looking back at the first season but didn't really like the format or the eliminator. That was amended but checked this out. Sooo close that was.

Not really, no. He bends the paper first, but they break through together. I thought the same back then watching it through on my VHS copy, but now, it's just too close to call, if it can be called at all.

Bryan Sinclair Wrong. If you look closely at the replay, Simon burst through the paper at the exact same frame Roger did. You could barely see it due to the paper on the left side having less light on it. If the judges call it a dead heat, it's a dead heat.

@Bryan Sinclair Just look closely. The problem was the left paper was illuminated, whereas the right was not, which got you confused.

Until about five minutes ago, I hadn’t seen this since it first aired (it’s amazing to think that almost 30 years have passed!!). I remember thinking at the time that the guy on the left-hand side won by a split-second... watching it now, I’m actually inclined to agree with the final decision. I think the guy on the left touched the paper first (because the paper definitely distorts a frame or two before it breaks), but it looks like they both actually burst through the paper at the same frame. If I remember correctly, the first series used a points leaderboard to determine which winners qualified for the next round - and since neither of these guys scored many points from the events, neither ended up qualifying.

@@GamingDelight yeah I agree, I thought back when this first aired (shit I would have only been six!) that the guy on the left won, but if you look at the centre of the G on the right and the top right hand corner of the G on the left, they seem to both start to come through on the same frame. I’m not sure what the rules are on what determines actually finishing the race, but if it’s the moment the hit the paper, it this a tie was the right call.
