I mean I don't hate it, but it is still a sequel no one wanted. Why does this need to sequel? Why not just make a standalone movie about gladiators? I would be far less skeptical about that then the forced plot contrivance of Lucian also being a gladiator out to save the empire or whatever the hell he is doing.

Rhinos are historically accurate. They along with other more exotic animals played a key part in the games. Rhinos specifically were obtained from Africa and India, but they would lose a lot of them during the passage back to Rome.

Then, they used special flat-bottomed ships during the battle to accommodate for the shallow water. The event replicated the battle between Athens and Syracuse. They even made an artificial island in the middle of the arena where the sailors landed to fight. So yes, it's a historical fact. Also Romans used to transport huge animals like elephants, giraffe, rhinos etc.from Africa and Asia to Rome.

But your power is slipping. Sub Saharan Africa was still largely unknown 2000 years ago and not many black Africans travelled North through the vast Sahara desert, or anywhere else for that matter.

After watching this trailer and thinking about Gladiator my mind took me to the first movie. They just wasted money in this part II .

This film should well damn retain the masterclass of the first one or surpass it but it should not in any way degrade the legacy of the first film.

There were middle eastern/ North African generals and emperors. Were they black like Denzel Washington? Debatable. Most likely they looked like the people in N Africa today- Arab/Semitic.

Excited for Gladiator 2 mainly because Ridley Scott is behind it, but the modern rap song in the trailer? Disappointed they used 'Church in the Wild' by Jay-Z and Kanye West. Period-appropriate music would be better.
