Today we are finally taking a closer look at the brand new 2020 Seiko Cream Alpinist. SBDC089 / SPB119J1 . Which I'm calling the Ghost Alpinist. It along with The Black SBDC087 / SPB117J1, the green SBDC091 / SPB121J1 , and the cream and gilt SBDC093 / SPB123J1 are the four new versions for this year. Which are all part of the ProSpec Seiko lineup.
Overall they are very similar to the previous Alpinist the SARB017. With the only major difference being the new 6R35 movement. Which supposedly brings the power reserve to 70 hours, but I also put that to the test.
Note: Some of the links above are affiliate links, I am an Amazon, Armilla, Aliexpress, Spinnaker, eBay and Phoibos affiliate so I would earn a small commission on qualified purchases. But most of the time Amazon is just the best source to link something just to get a look. I always encourage you to shop around and find the best price.

Most comprehensive and detailed review, thank you.
I have an 017 and it's perfectly aligned. Your investigation was helpful as was you review. I too love this "Ghost" Alpinist. I also have the 035 so I completely understand the versatility. IMO your review shows how this is the perfect every day watch, timing bezel and date included. Thank you.
This is an excellent, measured and detailed review. I particularly appreciated your discussion regarding the alignment issues with the compass. I originally was put off with this watch because of that problem, but your reasonable discussion has put it in a new perspective for me. I am definitely going to consider the ivory watch with the gold indices. Thanks for the wonderful and thoughtful insight. I just subscribed.

Best review I've seen of this watch. I"ve owned this watch for about a year and it really has grown on me. Very nice watch. Would have preferred Alpinist closed case-back, and retro style Alpinist script on the face though. Would recommend this watch nonetheless.
Thanks for this calm, informed, insightful and well shot video 👍
Once again, a well-thought-out review with solid points. Huge thanks for taking the time to research and review the bracelets! I’m looking forward to that video. I’m hoping for close attention to detail: endlinks and how they fit, links, screws, clasps, finishing, durability, solidity, feel, weight, looks, value, all of it :) It’s amazing how there is almost no information or reviews about aftermarket bracelets, even though they sell a lot. As you said, even the sellers themselves don’t know if their bracelets will fit a watch! If I was selling them, I think I would do my homework better. Another example of this problem is the Hamilton Khaki King; there are rumors online that the bracelet of the black dial version won’t fit the cream dial version. I’ve tried to find out about it, but even contacting Hamilton themselves didn’d clarify the matter - they just said it ”should fit”, but they weren’t sure. I have the cream dial version just like you do, and would really like to buy the stock bracelet for it, but ”should fit” is just an unacceptable official answer for a bracelet which costs about 160 euros alone. Anyway, thanks again for a good job! Your channel and Just One More Watch are two of my favourite watch channels. It really shows you put a lot of time, thought and effort into these.
I ordered mine directly from Seiko US. 10% off was helpful in getting the price below the list 725. I have an 017 and I love it. Great video Shane.
Great review! Thank you. Subscribed! I got the SARB017 on STAIB 20 mm mesh. I just love the ''old world'', gold and green look of the watch. Nothing quite like it on the market :)
Bro. You gave a good, clear and nice review on this new seiko.alpinist. Your voice matches with the video that gives a clear explanation on this review. The analysis is not too fast not too slow. Its just right to understand a review for alpinist. It also gave me a good idea on what to choose. Cheers bro👍.. Thanks
I am watching your video keeping my sarb017 green dial in my hand and saying yes mine is still the best, for ever!
Very nice review! Thanks. I’ll wait for prices to go down.

Most watches that have cyclops…look like a cyclops, this watch has a dewdrop. I’ve actually had people ask me if I had a drop of rain on my watch! it’s elegant. It’s perfect and I love it.

Great review. I have one myself, and I agree with all of the points you make. It's a bit steep on price, but I think it's well worth it once you have it in-hand. It's a beautiful piece that looks great with any strap. You can dress it up or down as needed. It's my everyday watch now. PLEASE PLEASE do a review of the bracelets and straps you recommend. I'm eager to get a bracelet for the thing, but need to hear more about how well things fit first. Keep up the good work.

Thanks! I'll definitely do the bracelet one, maybe in a few weeks. In the meantime I'll tell you I like the beads of rice. Fit is good, but not perfect. Bracelet is nice, and milled clasp is good. Only downside is folded end links. The President version seems like a little lower in quality. fit is the same, but stamped clasp that's not quite as good. Also folded end links. Strapcode bracelets will be nicer, but also a bit more too.
Just bought the black on bracelet. Looking forward to hearing about your other bracelet options.
Awesome review! You have a way of bringing out the beauty of the watch. Ended up purchasing the black version for $600.

Relative Time, The bracelet is good quality, but it doesn’t quite fit my wrist... it’s either too loose or a bit too tight. Planning to get a Strapcode for it. Purchased through a Jewelry store out in New Jersey.
Thoroughly enjoyable video, I do like that cyclops and it's a tough call whether to wait for prices to drop
My favourite part in this review was your analyze of the compass misalignment. First off I've actually never seen any comments on this in other reviewers on the Alpinists (I might've missed out on that), and it's something you'd hope would be correct for the costs these are galloping up to now. BUT second, it was interesting to hear that other makers in your collection wasn't exactly perfect in that matter as well. Of course that's not a defense to Seiko QC issues, but it was an interesting turn. Keep up the good work!

Thanks. On this one I think its a matter of reality vs expectations. At this price they should figure out how to have everything lined up. Yet since i haven't seen anyone else do it (at least not yet), it's hard for me to really come down on them for it. Originally that was the plan, and I was going to get footage from my other compressor style watches. Yet everyone I looked at was a little bit off.
"I looked at my other compressor style watches, I have seven" sorry but I had to laugh at that statement.

Blown away by this review! I've been watching watch reviews for a long time and never come across your channel. Safe to say I have a new favorite. Keep ut the good work! I owned the green baby apinist for some time. Agree with you, my biggest gripe was the height of the watch. Wish they would eliminate the display caseback, nothing to see really. Kind of regret selling it, but this white dial looks tempting.

@@RelativeTime So I owned the green one, got a bargain and thought I would check it out. Lovely watch, but some complaints. -Some dust/grit on the dial face -Too tall for it's other dimentions -Somewhat top heavy on the bracelet -Only 2 microadjustments on the clasp left me caught between too loose an too tight -REALLY wish the lumed the printed arabics But overall, I'm just nitpicking really, great watch for the 450$ price I paid. Would probably not buy for retail price. Really thinking of getting your ghost Alpinist, as I belive the bigger diameter will help on the wearability with such a tall watch. Also I see Uncle Seiko now does solid endlinks for their BoR bracelet, and that looks gorgeous. Thanks for the reply! Have a nice weekend.

Depends on the instance it seems. I just got the black shark tooth version. My compass cardinals are perfect everywhere but at 6, where it is off by 1/5th of a secon marker. Not too bad, didnt notice until you pointed it out. Nice review, thanks! :)
About the internal bezel play, I have never seen nor encountered anything like that with my Legend Diver and Polaris Memovox. Mind you, I’m quite observant when it comes to my watches. I tend to find myself unintentionally observing the dials of my watches more times than I’d like to admit on a daily basis. Regardless, it was always a pleasure when you lend your perspective on these watches. Great review, might pick this up even though I already have the original Alpinist in green and gold. 👍🏼

Thanks. I wonder if Longines & JLC are doing anything different from a build perspective, or if they are just much more observant in lining things up and weeding out the ones that don't.
Another very good video review.
Excellent review, very detailed, honest and practical advice that will help me to make the decision buying this watch, but for now I will wait for the price go down little bit more. Around $850-$900 Australian dollars depend on versions. Thanks very much.

Great review , thank you Neil Sedaka👍
Great long term review man. I use to own the SPB119J1 cream dial alpinist. I think for a 200m WR, sapphire crystal amazingly designed field watch, its great compared to swiss offering with the exact same specs, if there are ones. The watch is worth 700-800USD imo. Yes its not the perfect watch with bezel misalignment with it not being securely fast within the case, which i think is a really good point you made. I think more thought needed to be put onto strap options, I personally thought the alpinist was way too classy and i didnt want to spend money on another leather strap so i ended up selling the watch. If i were a collector of seiko pieces, or just one in general i would've gotten the sarb017 and if i was an alpinist fanatic, id get the black alpinist because at least it shows a bit more value with the bracelet and its design. Anyways, this was an extremely well done review, professional and very nice imagery, you are hella underrated.
I passed up the green gold version so many times because I couldn’t get over the colors. I’m glad I did. That blue one on the other hand will be mine before the end of the year.

I was so unsure about spending my hard-earned money on the Alpinist because you KZreadrs find so many negative ( and good ) things about the watch. But I spent it, and in spite of all I love this watch! I was lucky mi bezel isn't so bad alight 😜 Thanks for the videos 👍
The new white Alpinist is by far my favorite version. I’m also ok with the price, no one is being forced to buy it. The only design element I still can’t get past, are the asymmetrical crowns. But even that could change with over time, as certain designs kind of grow on you after a while. The Seiko Monsters come to mind.

I love the asymmetrical crowns, distinguishes the hands and makes it easier to read! Awesome watch
I eventually caved and picked up a new “ghost” here in Japan when one seller on Amazon put a couple for sale at about $600. This particular model really is a great looking watch and considering Seiko are putting 4r36 movements in watches up to $700 (e.g the darth turtle) , getting this excellent movement with sapphire for a similar price may soon be considered a bargain!

It's only a matter of time before it goes down. I don't think it will ever get Sarb017 territory, but hopefully it will get down to at least $500. I think Uncle Seiko calls that the President Bracelet. Not bad for about $70, but it's not as well made as the beads of rice version. Strapcode has some awesome ones too, but a little bit more.
Great, detailed review as always. I’m really liking the new 38mm Aplinist models that got leaked. They ditch the compass bezel and have a screw down 3 o’clock crown. They look way better and it solves at least one of the alignment issues. Unfortunately I’m not willing to buy Seikos Nader their new pricing scheme which is a good thing as I already have too many watches.

The deeper you go, the more pressure is applied to the seals and the tighter they seal against the stem. Until they fail, which will be way beyond 200m. Rest easy, it’ll be fine.

Great review. Honest and objective. I don't believe the pricing issue is isolated to the Alpinist. Dropping the SKX and introducing the 5KX is comparable, and I have heard similar mumblings from others about different watches (however I cannot remember by whom and about what and haven't done the research... that's your job! 🙂). Is Seiko repositioning itself? Is the Seiko 5 brands 'affordable Seiko' reputation being reinforced? Is Seiko *really trying to cement* its three-tier pricing policy with the Prospex line? Does Orient somehow fit into the equation? All good questions IMO. Anyway back to it. For example: Seiko 5 - $ Seiko - $$ Seiko Prospex - $$$ In some respects one could answer 'yeah...so what's new??' However I would say that 'what's new' is that this seems to have less to do with different levels of craftmenship, and more to do with levels of demand. I can hear a Seiko exec somewhere yelling: "why are we retailing the Alpinist for $400? They love it! Just put a new movement in it - but don't go crazy!, just use something that doesn't cost us much but make sure it has the specks to 'sell it'. And whack a Prospex logo on it too. Bang! $700! They'll pay what we tell 'em to pay". So the question is: Is Seiko gouging us because we love the watches design? Does Seiko listen to our gripes re. specs etc.? Have the above questions become rhetorical? Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the new Alpinist and think it's WELL worth $400...
Looks Awesome on that black NATO.
My bezel is off a tad, but I think it is due to the wobbling that can happen in the mechanism. I noticed that if you put the S on the top both N and S then line up, while N on top does not. That does suggest it's not the printing, but the way it changes positions slightly top to bottom.
Hate the cyclops, but at nearly 50 it is practical (tho I prefer no date on all watches) Guess it is a tool watch after all. Love my 017. Im sure I will end up with one of these , in cream, in a couple of years. Cheers 👍🏻
I like the cyclops, at least from the video, I've never seen a real one up close. The bezel alignment is weird. I wonder if it's just more noticeable on a compass bezel than on other types of bezels. Those little lume pips lasted way longer than I expected. I think the black version on the bracelet is my favorite.

That was one of my thoughts. A compass will divide a circle up by 360, where a timing bezel is 60. So maybe you notice the imprecision more.
Being left handed the bezels don't bother me a bit. If and doubtful I get another Alpinist, probably a good idea to wait sometime for them to up the QC. My King Turtle on right on with the bezel alignment, and they (green and save the ocean) are JDM versions. From what I understand all Alpinist's are Japanese made.
very nice video well done
Getting my black dial alpinist tomorrow! Got it for 600! 👍

Sweet. Where did you get it from?

Relative Time I got it from Chrono24!
I'm new to watches, but the lack of screw down on the compass crown confused me too! I just thought it would need the same spec as the main crown to get the 200m rating.
love the cyclops, love the watch
The scratches and slow running movement is why I moved off my sarb035. The only Seiko in my collection is the Snxs79j1 and I am pleased.

Was the Sarb a scratch magnet? So far that might be my biggest gripe. It doesn't look bad at all in person. yet on camera it really started showing them off.

@@RelativeTime He may be right, the case of Sarb is scratch magnet, Sarx series are more scratch resistant.
Right size, nice dial and Cyclopes what is not to like
BTW, I bought bracelets from both Strapcode and Uncle Seiko for my SPB1J, and yes, they fit the SARB017. Also btw, maybe the power reserve is a hit or miss...but in my case I can confirm its around 70h.
Most often I will try to keep the North and South aligned with 12 and 6. Was it that hard. Well honestly they should have still kept the 017. To me it was a looker
