    I had a waterbirth to bring my son into the world. Water really helps with the pain of natural labor, so so much. There was a birthing center 2 miles from a hospital, staffed with qualified midwives and big comfy tubs, rainbow cloud painted rooms, just great. Plus, it only cost about $1k total. I wish everyone had that option near them.

    Mostly low-risk (had gestational diabetes with this and kid #1); homebirth dr., his midwife, and our 2nd Bradley coach; hospital 2 miles away. 3rd degree tear, so I had to transfer afterwards, but I'd do it again. Had a rented birthing pool and used it, but dr. had me transfer to bed before my daughter was born, which turned out to be good, because of said 3rd degree tear. Had a hospital birth with midwives the first time, then some complications that led to me being induced, so I was on the regular floor, not the birthing suites, where the midwives run the show. I was allowed to eat and drink (nurse had to check with my midwives each time), but was eventually put on a glucose drop. Gestational diabetes + glucose drip = baby's blood sugar drops after birth, so they automatically go to the NICU. ☹️

    But to actually answer that question, the baby doesn't have to breathe within the first few seconds or even minutes of coming out. They are still oxygenated by the placenta. Just don't leave them underwater for too long 😅😂

    I loved being able to labor in the bathtub- it helped so much with pain management! That said- with my first, I could NOT get into a good position to push while in the tub, so plans had to change. With my second, it was no problem, and she came out so very calm and alert. I think for her it was maybe because of less exposure to cold air before she was on my warm chest and had a warm blanket to clean/dry her off?

    If you have a low-risk pregnancy, and have a midwife with you, it is just as safe as a hospital birth. Edit: A TRAINED midwife (in my country that's a standardized 3-year education), because in some countries everyone can call themselves a midwife and that's of course not the same.

    @@AkiyukiKitten respectfully, I disagree. It’s in fact safer at hospital. You’re not a neonatologist or an obgyn and you can’t bring the whole NICU with you. You do not have all the equipment and skills needed if something really bad were to happen like you would if you were at a hospital. If low risk women are ok with these risks, more power to them. I personally wouldn’t take that risk. I want every option readily available to me and my baby if something were to happen… but it’s false to say that home births are just as safe as hospital births just bc a midwife is there.

    I understand mama jones because as a med student myself, I know how traumatizing birth can be both to the mother and a child. Ya’ll think low risk pregnancies stay the same during delivery, but that's not true. The baby can turn into any position at any time such that it's unpredictable so it's important to be always prepared for an assisted vaginal delivery or an emergency C section if the baby isn't in the proper position where it can't come out of the vagina. Please do visit your OB gyn before deciding to give birth at home because seriously, giving birth is difficult both for the mother and the baby.

  • @calypso8436

    @calypso8436

    5 ай бұрын

    But midwives used to be trained to assist women in giving birth whatever the position of the baby! You could totally have a homebirth with a breech baby if the knowledge and skills hadn't been lost when it was deemed that a Caesarean was the only option for a breech baby. Also, no offence, but ob-gyns specialise in complicated pregnancies. The true experts in physiological births are midwives. (I'm European)

    @@calypso8436 You know, my uncle who lives in London said the same thing. But to clarify, OB gyns are trained both in normal physiological births as well as complicated pregnancies. And I'm not completely against giving birth at home, but always gaining advise from a doctor before initiating it helps. Also the role of midwives differs between countries so it really depends on your country's approved criteria for giving birth.

    That's a great idea. Cuts the pain in half, I'd estimate. I had my first in a bed, second in a bathtub, and third in a birthing tub. (Luxury option, lol) Obviously don't leave the baby's face underwater, but it's only under for a few seconds, you reach down and catch the baby and bring it up. 😍 (Unless you are also submerged, that's maybe not such a great idea. I kind of got a scuba diving vibe from the question 😅) And please have a midwife present, be registered with the hospital, only low risk, etc etc. Although I will say that my third came before the midwives could get there. She comes bursting through the door, and the baby and I are sitting in the tub (husband is freaking out on the phone with 911), "oh hi, look at my baby!" Way better than having it on the side of the road on the way to the hospital! 👍

    I tried labouring in a normal sized bathtub at the hospital - it was extremely uncomfortable because you can’t really move in it and on hands and knees your complete back is out of the water and gets cold. Would not recommend to give birth in a normal bathtub. If you want a water birth rent a birthing pool or look for a hospital with a big birthing tub that is deep enough for you to move around, be on hands and knees etc.
