    I drive a 2019 Tiguan SE- I wasn’t sure if I’d like it when I bought it: in fact I was afraid I made a mistake. But I looked at all competitors and almost bought a Mazda CX-5 but they all had severe hail damage out here last spring in Oklahoma City: the discount was $1500 off from our local Mazda dealer. I wasn’t thrilled with that so I drove over to the VW store and drove a Tiguan and it immediately felt right for me!! Which I had not found in any other crossover. I dealt on it and they offered $4500 off immediately so I asked for $300 more off and for them to add window tint and they agreed. I got a Platinum Gray with 3rd row. I’ve driven it to California and it did great and I like my Tiguan more and more everyday. I look forward to driving it and pushing my Turbo. I don’t have the 4-Motion. It’s quiet & comfortable and has heated seats and apple CarPlay and a CD Player still lol. I’m very happy with it. The Tiguan is built like a tank. My gas mileage is 26-28mpg in the city and up to 36 on the highway when I use cruise at 65mph. I recommend the Tiguan. She swallow lots of cargo. As Dave says, it’s not a race car but I don’t drive fast. If you push the accelerator hard you can get the power you need. The torque is good and I feel when I’m on the highway I have ample passing power. The seats are nicely bolstered. And one design feature I like is the huge carpet lined door pockets that hold 3 of my metal insulated 21oz beverage containers with room left over. The fit and finish is great and all the buttons feel reasonably solid for this price range of vehicle. It certainly doesn’t feel like a compact crossover. It feels midd size to me.

    Nice, honest review, Dave. Always appreciated to see the cons as well as the pros pointed out. I happen to like the more conservative styling of the Tiguan and German vehicles overall. Japanese and Korean models just are too overdone for me. It would be great if VW put back some of the guts and handling of the pre-2019 SELs in the new Tiguan.

    Please note that when you do average mpg that going from washington to montana is not the best example. Its up and down hills the whole way with 70mph speeds so youre wasting gas getting up the hills and romping on the gas to get up to speed. Also I might add is elevation which you were not accounting for either. Higher elevation means less air which takes fuel economy down. I own a sonic and have had worse gas mileage getting about 25-30mpg in montana compared to the 40mpg in eastern states like pennsylvania.

    I like the way it looks and the size. I can live with lack of power, but the reliability... My sister had Tiguan and after 55k miles, it was a money pit. And most were not covered by warranty. Dealer called it "wear and tear".

    This is the kind of information that makes me shy away from VW. Love the looks of the Tiguan, but need reviews from long-term owners, not the "new" buyers who are happy with everything until the SHTF. I'm in car-buying limbo at the moment. Been a Honda owner since '98, but even Honda quality of late is going in the crapper.

  • @ismaeljrp1

    @@JBLynch cars are far more complex than the 90s or even early 2000s, and we have to adjust our expectations for the present. No car will ever be as reliable as they used to be. That's simply how technology is. As long as you set the right expectations then you'll be fine. The car manufacturers are telling you what their expectations are, the warranty. So why should ours be loftier? Shop with the best warranty in mind and you'll be covered. Kia and Hyundai might be up your alley.

  • @JBLynch

    @JBLynch

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@ismaeljrp1 "Reliable as they used to be?" Not sure how old you are, but there was a time when cars would barely make it to 100K miles. My last Honda made it to 300K, and it wasn't anything mechanical that caused the demise of the car. Because of rust issues from road salt, everything the mechanic touched for routine maintenance would break , and it got to the point where he told me to get rid of it. Your average individual is putting out at least $30K for a car these days. For that kind of money, I would expect to get at least the 300K that I got from a new Honda that I paid $14K back in 2002. All a warranty guarantees is that a company knows their cars are questionable to begin with (Honda typically covers 3 years/36K.) I'm assuming you've read about the random engine fires of the brands you've mentioned? I have no desire to be a human S'more on my daily commute to work, my friend.

  • @ismaeljrp1

    @ismaeljrp1

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@JBLynch Then maybe cars aren't for you lol. It's a pipe dream to think you'll get 300k miles on any car you buy. For as many longevity examples you can find there are just as many lemons on the same vehicle. Tell a company you expect 300k and you'll get laughed in the face, let's be real here. For example, it was about that generation of Honda you mentioned was notorious for bad HVAC systems, but not every single one of them will fall prey to those issues. Sometimes it's just luck of the draw. I had an 2007 Hyundai for 8 years put 130k on it, and I was happy. Only had to deal with a 2 or 3 misfires, that were remedied for about 30 bucks each. Before that had an Isuzu, and a Montero and both had tons of miles on it before I got them and they lasted quite a few years after, with minor repairs/maintenance. There are many cases to argue for both sides TBH. I'm more of a realist, and I don't expect anything past a company's warranty. If they don't, then why should I? They're literally telling you in writing, "you're on your own from here buddy".

    @@ismaeljrp1 Most Honda owners will tell you their car is just getting broken in at 130K miles. My 2002 Honda treated me well. Never had HVAC issues. Cars aren't for me? Such an expert. Guess I'll return to my Amish Paradise and go back to my horse and buggy.

    I don't know who this Steven Hendricks guy is who is trying to smooth over the fact that VW has downgraded it's warranty from 6 to 4 years but as a former 2 time owner I can tell you that both of my previous VW's gave me expensive repair issues in years 4 and 5, we're talking about air conditioning, water pumps, head gaskets, and even some electrical issues. Yes they have that nice German ride and performance quality but the level of expense for repairs is far greater than the Japanese or Korean automakers. I was considering going back to VW when they announced the extended warranty a few years ago but not anymore!

    I bought a 2019 Tiguan SE / I’m very nervous about what year 4 & 5 will bring as far as maintenance for me to deal with. I may trade it in by that time. I did purchase this Tiguan because I liked it but I’ll admit the long warranty they offered did help my decision to go with a VW. We shall see. I did own a 2011 Jetta SEL and I didn’t have any problems with it. I put 100k miles on it.

    Omar Alonso I understand that. I’m sorry you’ve had issues at 5 or 6 years. I don’t keep mine that long for that reason specifically but I don’t look at cars as any kind of investment and I don’t have equity as you mentioned. Leasing is a wonderful option for me but I understand that doesn’t work for everyone. It’s worth it to me for the warranty guarantee. And my accountant recommends them and if you go over mileage a little I just pay for the extra but I usually don’t go over. It’s a write off on taxes and I just budget payments forever. I know leasing is more popular than ever. But some are opposed to it. I don’t have the tools, interest, time, or energy to work on cars that break. I apologize for the advice. I hope your plan works best for you.

However, all i ever hear is the problems VW owners have except how good the cars look. there are exceptions of course but, that's all it is are a few exceptions. These Tiguans comes with a turbo engine if I'm not mistaken and when the turbo goes bad the part is 1k or more and labor is about the same. Folks, if you want a car to last and is tried and true- go Japanese or American.

    Last Saturday I've rented this thing for a road trip. While the look from the outside is classic, this is a pile of junk. It has only 4000 miles on it and the blind-spot monitoring is on and off the whole trip, even when the road is all deserted. The 2.0 l turbo is a dog, acceleration has a huge lag and won't pick up until after many seconds you hit the gas pedal. The seats have no bolstering, I'm 5'10 and the driver seat feels very uncomfortable, apple car play didn't work, and it doesn't even have a basic standard USB port. It has type C ports ones which are useless for many and for me. (I went to a dollar store to get 12V extension plug LOL). well the list goes on and I can't even explain how stupidly engineered this absolute piece of junk this thing is. After they merged with Audi the quality has gone too bad. You should not just walk away, run away from that. Forget about buying don't even rent this thing and don't listen to the paid people or you'll get ripped off.
