"Give Em Hell Harry" (1975) - James Whitmore as President Harry S. Truman
Ойын-сауық
A film of the one-man show about the presidency of Harry S. Truman. James Whitmore (in a knock-out performance) looks back on his life in this one-man performance. Over the course of the film, Truman talks about his upbringing on a farm, his service in World War I and his time as an aspiring politician in Missouri. He also provides details about his short stint as vice president under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Following Roosevelt's death, Truman ascended to the presidency, and he addresses the weight of that responsibility with both humor and humility.
The film first premiered on September 18, 1975, and Whitmore was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar.

I saw this performance in Tulsa, Oklahoma in May, 1975.
Actors E.G. Marshall, Harry Morgan, Art Baker, Jack Gardan, Jerzy Kaliszewski, Robert Vaughn, James Whitmore, Ed Flanders, Gary Sinise, David Patrick Kelly, Kerry Shale, and Christian Rodska have all portrayed President Harry S. Truman. Though I haven't seen some of the performances, I think that E.G. Marshall, Harry Morgan, Robert Vaughn, James Whitmore, Ed Flanders, and Gary Sinise have done the best job portraying President Harry S. Truman. Thanks For Uploading This Performance!!!!! ❤
Mr. Whitmore did a super job of Harry S. Truman. I thought I was witnessing the 2nd coming of Harry. Fantastic job of getting the mannerisms and the look just soo close to the image of Harry. He was my first president, as I was born in 1948. Very good research was done to put on such an entertaining show. I've always enjoyed James Whitmore as a greater actor. I'm glad I got to experience his performances on the stage in the movies.
WOW! What a great portrayal and mannerisms done superbly by James W. He gave one hell of a performance.
I remember seeing this on HBO back in 1975. James Whitmore did a fantastic job. I don’t know whether this was intended as an impersonation or more of a lighthearted impression of President Truman. Regardless, it was very entertaining.
Very timely. Thanks!
Good way to speak today
Wow , this was incredible, I’m sure I’m going to watch this again!!!
Truman, the most uncommon Common Man….and James Whitmore genius as Truman.
I saw this in a Claremont, CA movie theater in early 1976. I was 14.
Outstanding performance
37:12 My favorite moment, when Truman discovers "the greatest counteroffensive weapon in warfare: CUSSING!!" I loved this show and James Whitmore's fantastic performance as Truman.
right place, wrong time! Pre-SNL.
Whitmore was a fine actor. Try to find his other one-man act, "Will Rogers, U.S.A." Even better.
watching it now
Audio is very quiet. I have it turned up to max volume & am straining to hear it.
Was the character "Bubbles" created after this portrayal? 👀👀
He talks about "faith" in Minnesota. His fellow "Democrats" in Minnesota today would run him out of town on a rail...
What happened with the north koreans and the chinese in 1950? Did Harry run out of hell??
Sad story. Ended badly. I hear he got into some trouble with the law, spent time in prison and then ended up bagging groceries.
Old Harry was a (failed) businessman, but he still couldn't see the fallacy of the "minimum wage" argument. A true "Democrat."

Who hasn’t failed in business ? No one. Except those simply born into loot. And canny enough to know how to hold on to it.

Harry was a self made man, and honest too.
Nice bathroom
Wow. HST's description of McCarthy sounds A LOT like "Democrat" cancel culture today. (BTW: We DID find communists in the US Government. Fewer than there are today, but that's another matter.) 'Tragic" then, even more tragic now.

The main argument against him today is that McCarthy's campaign discredited anti-communism. He was correct there were Communists in the government but he accused people too liberally.
Rather an inappropriate title The word hell shouldnt be used!
