That is an old trick ( you have to be very careful not getting powder in your eyes) but back in the 80' s me as a young Goth would do that trick to make my eyelashes much thicker & darker..more goth ! Years ago ( I' m from England) we didn't get all the fancy types of make-up that is available today & mascara literally just blackened your lashes & little else .Today's have thickening fibres & all sorts of stuff added to them .If you find that crazy ,my mum is 91 & when she was a child/ teen growing up here during WW11 Britain was very poor & until 1954 ( 5 yrs after the war ended) British people all had a ration book so they only got 2oz of butter ,sugar etc each a week..So the same happened for things like stockings / fights so ladies used to make a fake tanning type emulsion from GRAVY Browning & paint it on their legs with a sponge then one of their friends would carefully draw a line down the centre of the back of their leg with a pen to look like the seam in a stocking!!!! Women also ground down a piece of coal when desperate & made it into mascara/ liner & beetroot juice ( this sort of works) would be used for when nobody had any lipstick !.Read up about rationing in Britain it's both fascinating & pretty insane .lol xx
