Adrian, actually this model you reviewed is officially, the 41mm version. It was a one year model GP released in 2016 to celebrate the 225th anniversary of GP, limited to 225 pcs. It was available with blue and white dials. GP also used a different movement (GP3300 vs current GP 1800). Then in 2017, GP released the regular production models: 38mm & 42mm versions. Another main difference beside the movement is the GP logo on the dial. The anniversary models have a smaller logo while the current models have a bigger logo. Then the datewheel is color matched to the dial colors on the regular models.

  • @Wackenputz

    @Wackenputz

Good catch - noting the 225th anniversary model at 41mm versus the subsequent models at 42mm. I bought the white dial 41mm when they were initially offered; I preferred the GP Laureato 41mm to the three-hand APRO and PPNaut. The hands of the 41mm are longer than the 42mm, plus the hour markers on the 41mm are narrower giving the dial a less crowded appearance. I considered buying another GP Laureato, this time a 42mm with a blue or gray dial but I am so satisfied with the appearance of the 41mm's dial that the 42mm's dial appearance would be unsatisfying.

Happy you got around to this Brand. The Laureato 42mm’s are beautiful. I tried one on during an airport layover and was shocked by the comfort and feel, as well as good looks. Ordered a blue one and will hopefully pick it up next week once it is in. It looks like an AP RO as much as a Ferrari can look like a Lamborghini to an amateur.

Beautiful watch, mentioned in dispatches should also be the Maurice Lacroix Aikon and the Baume and Mercier Riviera which dates back to ‘73 both costing a fraction of one from the “big three”. People should buy what that want and wear what they like, nobody out there really notices or cares anyway.

I think you hit it on the head with the limited edition version being the best of the bunch. For me the dial pattern and the lumed markers are the things giving off that royal oak vibe and changing that really made it different. I would like the GP to double down on that direction and maybe try the flat gloss or even fume dials to really become it's own thing. I would love to see the lume dots on the outer edge of those metal markers to keep them slim and dressy like they are in the limited edition. I mean for me that would make the watch very much its own thing.

I really don’t think you need to compare this to any other watch, as I think the design is strong enough to stand alone. In recent months I have come to admire this brand a lot and it has a very rich history too. Okay it might not be one of the holy trinity, (but as someone said recently), they took the group photo so they just missed out. Wearing a GP should get a very respectful nod from any collector, unless of course they are watch snobs… the lowest of the low.

lots of reasons which Adrian touched on but I'd add one more.. it just isn't as well designed as the Royal Oak or Nautilus. If you put all three in front of 1000 people who had no clue about watches, the GP would rank last on aesthetics I'm a fan of the GP and am really tempted by the black ceramic Laureato.. but truth be told.. if the black ceramic Royal Oak was the same price.. the GP wouldn't get a look in

I’ve always liked GP’s they’re under rated in my view. My wife has a gold GP cocktail watch from the 30’s. Probably only worth a couple of hundred quid in gold value, such a shame as it’s a really beautiful piece. Having said that there is far too much focus on value retention, if your not selling what’s it matter? Lovely photography Adrian, that dial really pops. 👍

If people can get past the brand recognition they will realize there is a ton of value out there. I recently bought possibly one of the last 38mm chronos in the UK as the smaller size is being discontinued. I am so happy with my choice and I'd pick it over a Daytona in a heartbeat over and over again (as a direct price comparison). Having also tried on APs I'm happy to save the cost of and headache of getting one of those in favour of this. You captured my favourite feature well, the horizontal brushing of the case almost looks like wood grain and plays with the light in such a unique way. Great video as always, thanks Adrian!

Love, love, love the GP Laureato 38mm Copper dial edition. That Laureato with the Infinity Edition Gloss Black dial also sounds interesting. Two things come to mind when comparing the Laureato and the Royal Oak. The Laureato has a narrower bezel than the Royal Oak, and the lack of the screws on the Laureato bezel creates is less distracting from the beautiful dial face. And a positive thought is that for the price of a Royal Oak, you could buy at least two or three Laureatos!

A cracking watch Adrian, a great review for watch that can stand on its own three hands. There may be similarities to the Royal Oak but is is different enough in my humble opinion to be its own watch and with its own in house movement. The bolt on bezel is an interesting one and tolerances and torque settings must be tight for it to align correctly with the case. I'll take a look at one of these sometime in the future.

It makes me glad that you give one of my favorite watchmaker some well earned attention, GP. Also thank you for the review of beautiful V.C Over Seas Everest. However there is a small thing I would like to see. Could you please make a video and tell the full story of the GP Sea Hawk, Generation I, II and what I would like to call generation III, please. It stated as a rather moderat watch and later became a beautiful beast among divers watches. Thank you.

It looks more like a VC+PP fusion than an AP. The shape of the bezel is more 222 than Royal Oak and the bracelet is very Nautilus. Love the look of the GP as well as the price point. Amazing video as usual!

You can't really compare angular velocity to linear. Mind you, I guess you can use v=rω which would make it the tangential speed - so you'd need the radius of the balance wheel and the amplitude angle then we could calculate it(!)

Amazing watch that is highly underrated. Definitely on my list. Adrian do you think this Watch is better in terms quality, finishing and movement than the Piaget Polo?

It is my understanding that Tim Mosso said the movement finish on Girard Perregaux's cal. 1800 in the Laureato is slighty better (e.g. the mirror anglage etc.) when compared to the caliber used in the standard Royal Oak.

I got my in sunny Singapore and the blue dial 42mm for 6.5k gbp. But I waited 4 months for it. It is a steal really compare to my sub, it is really really special.

I had the Laureato on my 17,5cm wrist and it felt massive! It is slim but felt like I was wearing a 45mm watch

The SMERSH assassin, Donovan "Red" Grant, in the "From Russia With Love" novel, wore a GP. I do quite like the Laureato, especially that silver-dialled version. As for watches that I'd like to see a video on: my heart aches for the new Seamaster 300 Master Chronometer (Heritage) in blue - though you don't see many videos on the black version, either. That sandwich dial makes me all fuzzy inside!

The date window doesn't align with the dial grid pattern. It's driving me nuts! A complete lack of coordination with design and movement.

GP is stellar and this watch is excellent! I own the 225 Anniversary and I can assure any doubters that this timepiece doesn't feel like a knock-off. Also, the model you're showing appears to be the 225 Anniversary LE. I can tell by the date window implementation. That means this particular watch is a 41mm case. The Anniversary edition has been long sold out. This watch is a stunner!

Since you’re comparing watches to the famous models of the holy trinity, can you do a review on the Piaget polo s with the blue rubber band. This is a limited edition and only 888 made. I think this is a killer design
