Giorgia Meloni set to become Italy's most right-wing leader since WWII | DW News

Italians have begun casting their ballots in a vote that's expected to bring seismic change. Far-right candidate Giorgia Meloni is forecast to top the poll, and become Italy's most right-wing leader since World War Two, and its first female prime minister.
Polling stations opened this morning - and voting will continue until about 11 pm local time. Italian politics have a reputation for instability, with 73 governments in the last 76 years. If Meloni wins, the European Union's third largest economy would be in the hands of a euroskeptic nationalist government.

I don't know anything about the politics of this Italian election, but I do know that, in any political system, whenever there is a candidate with a clear margin of public support compared to other candidates, there is a reason for it. Yet, none of the talking heads expressing opinions, and none of the ordinary people interviewed in this piece, articulated any actual reason for this change in Italian politics. Of course, we know that the political status quo in Italy has been so bad that Mario Draghi tried twice to resign as prime minister because he viewed the job as having become impossible for him to do (and he's probably the most capable person in the political establishment of Italy). So maybe it's not surprising that Italians wanted an entirely new team in charge of their government. A little dispassionate candor about what's really going on in Italy would have been helpful.

The point is you don’t get to speak for me as to where, to what, or in which way I place my loyalty. That’s called tyranny over freedom. An open society may not be perfect, but the answer certainly isn’t repression.

A lot of conservatives and populists (such as Meloni) love to oversimplify emigration. The war in Ukraine and the people fleeing are not to be compared with fleeing people from the African continent or the middle east, where children and woman are much more likely to end up in human trafficking, sold as wifes and sex slavery. Travelling from Africa or the middle east to Europe is way more dangerous than travelling from Ukraine to Poland and other places within the EU. This is why families from Africa and the middle east send out young men to go to the EU as they are much more likely to survive the journey (crossing war torn places, deserts or oceans in overfilled live boats). They hope that these men get permitted residence and that they can bring over the rest of their family to safety in the EU. It's more secure that way. Ukrainians don't run into these issues as much, although there had been issues with human trafficing in the first months of war. The situation apparently calmed down or it's just not reported as much anymore. You also don't see as many Ukrainian men fleeing, because it's literally illegal for them to leave if they're healthy and young. It sucks but someone has to keep the country running. They don't want to just hand their country over to Russia.

But that was exactly China's model since the 90s. However, also why is that a bad thing? Manufacturing of low margin goods is not a way how to get wealthy. Italy inside EU developed a great tourism industry and luxury brands with access to EU markets. Economy is about adopting and playing your strengths, not trying to make everything at home like North Korea is trying to do.

@Dnpe It is called market competition. Gucci and Ferrari are still relevant being open to global markets, but only as niche small scale luxury brands. Your problem is that the lesser known brands that produced lower margin products got out-competed in global economy during the rise of China. E.g. nobody cares for Ferrari when it produces a thousand cars a year when VolksWagen produces millions for a better price/value and even shipped production to China to have presence in Asian markets. Fiat didn't managed that because of some big bad EU story. Maybe rather than complain you should do something about it and play to your strengths, for example Italy still has very good military naval production going, maybe expand that now when world is going nuts with military expansions. But isolation and economic national border restrictions that ultra-right is proposing is a fools way. Look at North Korea how good it works there.

Italy doesn't go to snap elections that often. Actually, less than many other countries in Europe. What happens really often is a change in government, while keeping the same parliament. In Italy the government doesn't have a mandate, so it keeps running until the parliament vote it out of office or the legislature come to an end. This is because Italy is a parliamentary republic, so the people vote only for the parliament, not the government. The reason why Italy has more elections is because it has a more democratic system and democracy is messy. Italy has a buffet of parties and ideas where as the US has only chicken or pasta. If your goal is stability then you need to limit democracy... one can get Queen the last one in the UK ruled for 70 years or use fptp which favors the ruling classes and the rich in capitalist societies. Italy maybe unstable but it is more democratic than the UK, Canada India who have a king and FPTP and more democratic than the US.

@@danielaf1487 Such absolute nonsense. Far from being a great democracy, Italy, like the US, only ranks as a flawed democracy in the EIU Democracy Index. Having been born and lived most of my life in the world’s most democratic nation ~ Norway ~ I can assure you that democracy is anything but messy. Several countries, such as New Zealand, Germany and Switzerland use a proportional representation system. Enjoying both New Zealand and Swiss citizenship, I can tell you it works very effectively in those countries. No other European country comes remotely close to 67 elections since 1945. Italy as a country is a basket case by every measure but its food and design.

Italy instead has always been a geographically, socially and politically divided nation. You dont get decades of political terrorism for nothing. Still this government has some more chance, cause it's based on a pretty uniform right-wing coalition, that has gained a solid majority in parliament.

@@marcobeltrami4093 More utter nonsense..Norway is considerably larger than Italy. Any country can have political controversy if it sets itself up to do so. The average Italian is easily excitable and angers easily.when one party has “a solid majority in parliament”, it becomes a body which is less than inclusive and many people’s opinions are forgotten. Combine, people feeling they have no voice with the massive corruption, incompetence and violence of Italy and the natural outcome is instability. In Norway, Switzerland and New Zealand, everybody feels their voice is heard. In all three countries, street protests are rare and riots unheard of. Norway and Switzerland, especially are wealthy because corruption is virtually unheard of and when the composition of our government changes, they don’t spend their first months undoing the work of the previous government. It’s no surprise that the longest government term in Italy was the facist dictatorship of Mussolini. When this new leader’s government fails in 2023, Italy will be no more united, prosperous or taken seriously than it is today.

The New York Times did a piece on how Chinese immigrant women are trapped in prostitution by offering massage services. Also, there's the issue of the country of origin losing all its economically active male population, thereby ensuring continued poverty and fuelling the immigration cycle. If one leader rambles on about the problem’s complexity to a point that no one understands it, and another breaks it down simply and gives a solution you can understand, you go for the second one. Because at least they’re trying to explain it to you, and at least they’re giving a solution. It might be populism, but populism doesn’t always translate into fascism or anything close. So pretty much no matter on which political spectrum the government would be it will still need to comply with EU standards and regulations. If they try to exit the EU well they can look on Brexit and how disastrously it is being handled. So yeah to sum up it’s really sad there’s no stability in the Italian politics even technocrats like Monti and Draghi cannot form a stable government just proves how dysfunctional it is.
