My dad is a HUGE Herb Alpert fan and still owns at least four of his records. I grew up listening to both Herb Alpert and Gino Vannelli in the late 70's/early 80's as a child, but I never knew until now that it was Herb Alpert who gave Vannelli his big break. This was the time when the music was real, the artists were incredible, the song-writing was passionate, and the music industry as a whole was somewhat like a golden kingdom for us fans. We saw and heard great new artists emerge almost every other year in the 1970's-1990's, sometimes even months apart. So proud to have grown up in that era. Still a big Gino Vannelli fan. The man still looks good at 70, and that golden voice is still slaying.

this story makes me curious about his brothers. what was it about their songwriting process that let them know this song would be a big hit and what were they doing with their songs that they didn't give Gino? did they write for other people? was there something about the hook in this one that made them think it was going to do the job for Gino in particular?

Scary - The Entire 78 Album is Masterpiece.
Listen to the mid 70s albums Powerful People, and Storm At Sunup. They are a fantastic fusion of pop/soul/r&b/jazz/fusion featuring killer tunes, arrangements, musicianship and production. Very inspired music!
this story makes me curious about his brothers. what was it about their songwriting process that let them know this song would be a big hit and what were they doing with their songs that they didn't give Gino? did they write for other people? was there something about the hook in this one that made them think it was going to do the job for Gino in particular?
Certainly not his first hit single. It may have been his first top 10 record, but it was his seventh to make the charts in Canada.
Mad Maple Syrupppy Canadian love always.💋❤
