This was great. My drum teacher 30 years ago taught me a bossa nova but the snare cross stick was simpler. Your cross stick sounds sooooo much better. Thank you so much.

:) cool, Kev - thank you man
i absolutely love your style of teaching! it's simplified and not too bogged down with technicalities, even though much of it does require lots of technique. i also love that you play the actual beat first so the viewer can simply just hear it all first before breaking it all down. i also get the feeling that you have made these videos to actually teach rather than stroke your own ego. your joy comes through loud and clear! i view all your videos and try to absorb whatever i can from each. thank you so much.

Doors drummer Densmore used a lot of Bossa Nova. Love the beginning of "Break On Through".

John Densmore is one of the best players ever. 😎
I am a classic rock/country drummer who became an unemployed drummer due to the Covid nonsense...I have made it a goal to try and learn how to play Latin music and "possibly" jazz. Thanks Gina for this great Bossa Nova lesson.....Happy New Year.
Sooo good. I've been searching on youtube for hours and your lesson is the best, it's exactly what I needed THANK YOU

totally agreed! thanks
Thank you Gina.John densmore made it popular with the doors adding a faster tempo with brake on through it was a popular beat in the 60’s including Sergio Mendes Brasil 66.
Been practising the basics of the bossa nova the whole week. Though I allready mentally understood the groove, after seeing your video I finally fysically could work it out. I guess you could say I finally felt it while playing. Thanks!
Such a good teacher and thanks for the positive soul
You are a very good teacher/instructor/facilitator 🥁🔥✊🏾
You really are a very good teacher! Great videos!
I truly like the vid on down beats & up beats; spectacular. THANKS A THOUSAND.
Love this - you are my 3-year old daughter's favorite drummer!
Hi, thank you so much, I finally get it...I have taught dance for 43 years...now Bossa Nova is in Vogue...I get what you are saying....I don't play any musical instruments....I am a trained latin dancer,..I am teaching a Bossa Nova line dance .however, first the music then the dance, most dance teachers don;t get that! I can't wait to teach my students the exact rhythm....You Rock....bring this video back to life!!! TKH

I love your comment. First the music - then the dance. I really love to dance. I just consider it drumming with my feet! hahaha......Music and dance are definitely interconnected and again - thank you so much for your comment Tracy! :) Have a fun with that class! I have a feeling your students are very lucky.
You're a joy to behold, hate to see the "like button" disabled. I want to rip the bits with you clapping and playing/singing Ipanema, loop & jam along. Very inspiring and a dummy like me understands.
Nice demonstration! A thing to note is that Bossa Nova is mostly NOT played with high heels. Similar to Jazz but not feathering the bass drum either. It adds more color (or taste) when every second note on the bass drum is accentuated. Accents on the hi-hat are very welcome too. Both Bossa Nova and Samba are very melodic rhythms.
Very good lesson! I love the way you move while playing, kind of dancing. I guess dancing with the drums make you play groovier.
Wow this is lovely hope i get to learn this
I didn't know I would fall in love on December 20th 2015
Thanks for this clear explanation !
Very good class!
Love this bossa pattern that Gina plays!

Fantastic! Love the shaker or the ride! I love using a Bossa Nova pattern while doing metronome exercises (Bossa 2 is the coolest rhythm in my guitar processor and I can dial it up to ridiculous tempos, 190bpm - 240bpm is my range). At 208 it is perfect for the main riff from Angel of Death by Slayer, I couldn't believe that the first time I noticed it! Anyway thanks again, really cool video explaining the pattern and variations.

I think that in this style before the 2nd beat (after the first) may go a terzine on the hihat ti do a pattern like "tik tiki tik tik tik tik tik tik" on it to make the beat more relaxed and varied and less mechanic (i know that may be harder than the video example for a non expert but i've done that rythm with that variation and more inside like the terzines on the rim and the two octaves on the 2nd and 4th beat of the rythm on the floor tom like a feeling of the surdo put on the bossa rythm also
Awesome!
Very Nice
you're really nice and smart. Good work.

ME ENAMORE!!! YA ME SALE EL PATRON GRACIASS BOSSA! GRACIAS BOMBON
COOL!
Muito bom mesmo.
Swiping motion works great for brushes, I don't really like the sound on the hihats... the best option in my opinion is practicing different combinations and accents on the 16th notes and you can use groupings to play faster or not necessarily play 4 notes for every beat... Just a different thought. :)

Hmm...not like a 3:2 clave (Son) because in the second measure of the last beat is on the "&" before 4. In Son clave this beat is on the 3.
I wish i had a multitask brain :/ BTW...Nice kind brazilian smile type and awsome teaching skills!

Yes, just a little bit of more swing and less "Rumba like" feel. You're really good, Gina... In the end, all kind of rhythm that came from samba need to be felt to be played... Here, your not sounding like a Walt Disney's character (hehehehe)... To get more "feel" you just need to vary the accents to between hi-hat, rim and kick just like you play the rim. I mean, the 3 kick is just a little bit harder them the 1 kick The first rim is a little bit harder then all others The 8th Hi-hat is a little bit harder the all others... But I think you really got the groove...
billy joel famously used a bossa nova drum beat on just the way you are
the girl from Ipanema, break on thru, computer blue intro "borrows" from this technique also.
We need more specific note to play this bossa nova ! Aren't You know that is not easy to paly
