    I love intermittent fasting! I stumbled across it quite by accident and didn't even realize it was a "thing." I was so tired after work that I just decided that I would go home and right to bed without dinner. Before long, my co-workers were telling me that I was losing weight and I was stunned because I was still eating everything I normally ate but was just skipping dinner. Then, thanks to my horrible diet, I developed some major digestive issues and they were getting worse. I started researching online and one doctor said his mother was having the same issues as I was and he put her on a fast for 3 days and everything cleared up. I didn't think I could go 3 days without food but I prayed and gave it a shot. Well, I ended up going 5 days and it was so easy I couldn't believe it!!! I did more research and discovered more about intermittent fasting and decided to make it a new way of eating for me. It's helped me lose 103 lbs and lessened my digestive issues about 90% and I just recently discovered Carnivore and that has done the rest! It's just unbelievable what fasting can do and to me, it's the easiest thing I have ever done. Over the time I have used it, my tastes have changed so much and Carnivore took me over the top. Cravings gone and I feel so good it's mind-blowing! I'll never go back. I really don't think I could eat every day again. Right now I'm doing alternate day fasting and last month I did rolling 72-hour fasts all month. I absolutely love it and I can still work out and everything! I didn't have any energy to work out when I was eating every day. I'm 66 years old and hope to live at least into my 90's...intermittent fasting is the way!

    The most important thing for fasting is to constantly change up the fasting cycle. The body is amazing and it will adapt to IF or OMAD or ADF, etc. So the trick is to do all of the above in a random pattern and confuse the metabolism and body so it never plateaus!

    I've been doing this a little over a month now and my body is starting to get the swing of it. I like to exercise right after coffee in the morning and eat at dinner, then do some gentle stretching before bed to relax. I'm losing an average of one pound per week.     I was on the fence about her book, but not any more. Thanks for the interview. Two of the biggest things for me is clean fasting and how not to trigger insulin and changing your pattern of fasting.

    It’s a great book, simplified and informative, and it was an honor to interview her! I think once you understand the effects of insulin, it becomes clear why we don’t want too much of it! I always think of insulin as a fat “storage” hormone!

    I weighed myself today for the first time in 1.5 yrs- 5 months of committed IF & I'm at a weight I was at in highschool!!! I'm down 8 kgs more than my initial goal, I can't believe how simple it was. Gin, you are the best!❤

    That's called ADF, or alternate day fasting. And incorporating OMAD into ADF. It's great short term but not sustainable.

    I think a nightly fast of 12 hours is great and at a beginning of each season do a 2-3 day fast of water/electrolytes maybe. Some people can do more each night but sometimes hormones etc can get disrupted. I think 5:2 good alternative for some. The goal is optimal health!

    I have the book and I understand the concept of clean fasting and I understand how to alternate each method of intermittent fasting to get results and the way you can listen to your body when you are full or 80% satisfied .

    Great video and information!! I am a first week newbie to OMAD, but am already feeling the benefits (clear mind, way less bloated, less anxiety, etc.)!! I just stumbled upon it and said why not, let's give it a try! I have been binge watching videos all week on the subject and it just occurred to me that perhaps my vaping was also causing my glucose to spike and remain elevated all day. I quit smoking cigarettes over 3 years ago. My vape really helped, and allowed me to slowly wean off of nicotine entirely but, I have seen a ton of weight gain ever since. For the last year it's just been slowly breaking the smoking habit, with blueberries or Carmel flavored 0 nicotine juice, but I think the sweet flavors have been throwing my system out of wack! As of this week, I have stopped vaping entirely, and have been clean fasting daily for 18-20 hours. Hoping this is the key!! I am already feeling much better, just hoping that continues!!

    on day 17 of 30 day fast. Have lost 18 lb. From tight size 18 to tight size 12. I do have a goal but if I don't reach it I'll be happy either way. I'll readjust as needed. Not going to make myself crazy. I'm doing this for me and no one else. I will then go to alternate day fasting. It is mindset that I can and will do this for the rest of my life. It will now be my lifestyle. Always thought it was annoying to have to eat food. I'm doing this for health and weight loss. Once I reach the ideal weight for me, I'll simply maintain it. I'm not interested in being skinny and boney. I just want to be able to wear the clothes that I already have. When my daughter was very young, she would have hungry days and not hungry days. I just made sure she drank water and didn't make a big deal out of it. I originally started with a 1-day fast and got through it. Then I went for a 3-day fast and got through it. And then I decided I do a 7 Day fast and then thought why not go for 30? So here I am. I've decided to relabel the process like starving, hunger, cheating and suffering to readjusting, smiling, success, and winning. I do very light exercises, walking treadmill for 30 minutes or recumbent bike for 30 to 60 minutes, nothing strenuous. I'm so happy because I found what works for me. Do your research. Check out videos of several people. Find the one that works for you. I don't live and die with all the videos. I make it fit for my own success. One person says one thing that I like another one says another and I just take bits and pieces and make it my own. I won't wish you good luck. I will wish you good effort. Try fasting for one day and see if you can get through it, try intermittent fasting. Try alternate day fasting. You never know, you may be able to do it. Stop using the negative words like I can't, won't & don't. Try using can, will, do. Get rid of the word maybe. Ignore the naysayers. It won't kill you to try one day. Success to you all.

    I take zyprexa every night before bed which raises my insulin so I am finally losing 3-4 pounds per week doing alternate day fasting. I also lift weights at the LA Fitness on my fasting days and I love how I feel in a fasted state. During my eating days I follow a WFPB diet to lower my cholesterol. I am losing weight during menopause and I've never felt healthier!

    @@nygrlathrt4015 WFPB is a Whole Foods Plant Based diet. I was on this way of eating for a while but not losing weight. Then I read Benjamin Bikmans book Why We Get Sick and switched to the Keto diet a week ago. Combining Keto, intermittent fasting and strength training helped me break my fat loss plateau and in just the first week I lost 8 pounds of body fat! When my body fat gets down to 19% I will slowly introduce carbohydrates back into my diet. I have a Rempho scale and also access to my blood work results. Just bought a watch that will measure my glucose levels at home.

    First week in. Playing with the flexibility of it. Liking not counting calories, loving the freedom I’ve given myself. Making healthy habits. Right away noticing youthfulness in my face. (Which is kinda funny cause I just died my hair grey 😂) Also cellulite is less in my legs! Down maybe a pound but the body is shifting. Hoping it will help my PMS/ peri-pre- menopause symptoms especially with my inflammation during that time of the month

    Correct- even tho it’s zero calories.. it triggers insulin to be released into the body whenever you digest anything with a sweet taste. Your brain thinks food is on the way… therefore you release insulin. Insulin = no weight loss

    @@gardeniaferguson7767 if it's not flavored. No lemon, no lime, no mixed berry or such during your window of fasting. It must be plain sparkling water. And that you can have anytime, both inside and outside of your window of fasting.

    Some of the research seems to suggest that the issue of “insulin resistance” is a combo of carbs AND fat. Randle Cycle activation. They both antagonize each other in terms of being able to mobilize those energy substrates. Glucose stays extra cellular. Fat stays extra cellular. Insulin is high. If you look at high carb low fat diets, those people seem to do ok from an insulin resistance standpoint. Sugar gets mobilized relatively well. Now, the issue is whether that’s nutritionally adequate, but that’s a different conversation.

    @@veronicavargas6895 I have been keto for several years. Have been strict carnivore for 18 months. With keto, I always craved “snacks”. Keto cookies. Keto mug cakes. Keto cheesecake. Peanut butter. Etc. With carnivore, my cravings for anything sweet and treat like have completely vanished. In fact, it has completely altered my palate in terms of how those things taste to me. Carnivore btw has been next level in terms of my body comp and how I feel. Leanest and most muscular that I’ve ever been. Boundless energy. Can fast prolonged without any issues. I do 36-48 hour fasts a couple of times per week. Eat to satiety on my feed days.

    I'm on the Gin bandwagon, for sure. Loved the book and this interview. My weight is coming off slowly, but my appetite has changed a lot. I used to be like a baby, hungry ever 3 hours. I'm naturally eating fewer calories and feeling very healthy with great energy at 68! My only problem was terrible bloating on day 25 with constipation. I'm wondering if that has something to do with a changing gut biome?

    That could be it. Just make sure eating good amount of fiber in your eating window & get exercise. Sometimes metamucil at bedtime is helpful if problem persists, but also see your healthcare provider if it doesn’t return to your normal pattern.

    I'm listening to the audiobook at the moment and am at the Yes, No part, so I have a question.....is coconut water allowed during the fasting window? As an electrolyte supply. Coconut water was used in wars to supply wounded soldiers with electrolytes in order to keep them alive. I read an article about that

    Hello 👋 I’m trying to understand everything I bought the book fast feast repeat so when I start the 28 day challenge mines the steady build approach after that is it that you fast every other day I’m confused 🤔 I’m keto I MealPrep I like intermittent fasting it takes away inflammation I have but I need to lose weight I want to do it right help please

    I’m not seeing the changes id hoped. It’ll make 2 months of fasting for me on the 22nd; i don’t feel it in my clothes, am desperately looking for physical changes on my body and am terrified to get on a scale for fear of what i might see after two months of IF!! I ate outside my window for the first time last night (1am cheezies and cake!!!) and am afraid this is the beginning of the end of IF unless i see changes soon!!!…should i start month 3??

    I will tell you that it can work differently for men and women. Also, it is still important during your eating window to eat healthy foods and not excess calories. Don't be so hard on yourself.     Listen to Gin's podcast "Intermittent Fasting Stories." You'll learn that the physical changes manifest at widely different times for different people. You didn't mention if you're clean-fasting or not. Sometimes a simple tweak will make a huge difference. Long before I started losing weight/inches, I noticed that the pain in my feet, ankles & knees disappeared. IF is always working on SOMETHING. Be patient.🙂

    I’m so grateful for the responses! Ty x 1000! I have good news…i weighed in not long after my post and Ta-dah!! I was down 7.75 lbs after 2 months!! And another 1.5lbs the week after!! I haven’t budged weight wise in over 20 yrs, suddenly this!! I feel SO good, especially during a long fast, in so many ways: physically and mentally!! I am clean fasting and cannot believe that i can even do that! It’s coming. Patience IS key and every body has its own timing. I’m so happy i stuck it out and will keep on this journey. Its incredible. Thanks for your encouragement. Im very very grateful:) PS waiting a few more days to weigh in again…Im very hopeful!

    You’re probably screwing up your electrolytes with all that stuff. Plus, are you drinking BCAAs during your fast? If so, that breaks your fast. Just drink water (or black coffee, tea) and add a little salt throughout the day and see how you feel. Drink only when you feel thirsty.

    There are many forms of magnesium and some in powder forms. You could start low dose and do it right before sleep. Magnesium Glycinate is one of my favorites.

    She does talk about this in the book and the book Obesity Code does a great job explaining this! Overall, from a health & longevity standpoint, eating less is better. Digestion takes away energy that can be used for other vital processes in the body, like immune function. Also, there are cellular mechanisms that rid us of old, senescent cells that stick around causing havoc, including causing inflammation and disease. Research autophagy and you will better understand it. I personally follow my circadian rhythm for eating and sleeping. I don’t eat atleast 3-4 hours before bed until next day. My fasting window is later in the day, early dinner then nothing. I feel better & there has been research that it is better to consume your calories earlier in the day then later, they are metabolized better. Hope this helps!

    On fasting days what if you don’t drink coffee what you can have I start my day being at work at 4:30 am so I try to fast until 1 my eating window is 1-9 is that good I workout during my eating window I’m trying to figure out what to have while I fast I drink ketones

    Water, black coffee or tea. The presence of flavoring in drinks or gum during fasting window stimulates insulin. The bitter in black coffee will not stimulate.

    Just drink water if you don’t drink coffee. Drinking ketones during your fast is not a good idea, as they put your body in ketosis from an external source, instead of switching to ketosis internally on your own. You want to use the ketones that your body creates for fuel by breaking down fat, not some external source of ketones. That defeats the purpose.

    @@vondalittle9425 - okay, but it’s keeping your body from using your body fat to generate ketones itself, which is the point of fasting if you want to lose fat. If your goal is brain health or cancer prevention/treatment, that’s a different story. LMNT is great, assuming it’s the unflavored, as the flavored may stimulate insulin, since it’s sweet tasting.

    It is recommended to drink: water, black coffee, black tea without any flavors or sugars or creams. Generally, when someone is having "hunger pangs", sometimes they are just thirsty and so it is recommended that drinking water will help. If not, then it's important as Gin says, it's a mindset. Think of all the benefits. Then you might want to be busy with doing something else to take your mind off of it. Hope this helps.

    For me this was a week. I had bought a package of nutter butter cookies because I was finishing off my eating window with a cookie or two. On one of the first days I was IF’ing the cookies were gone. Someone in the house had eaten them all and I almost burned the house down. Some things happened at work where I literally thought my nails would grow into wolverine claws so I could kill coworkers I had never been angry with before. A week. A week later I felt a lot better. It’s been 2 1/2 months later with a week off for vacation, a stomach bug for 2 days, going from 20:4 to 22:2 to 18:6 back to 22:2 and now on ADF for a week. I’m down 23 lbs. I feel so good. It gets better. Good luck!

    I’ve watched Mindy’s video abt post menopausal, which is me. Her approach is 5-1-1; 5-15 hour fast, 1 extended and 1 non fasting day. Literally just started this framework this week, so no results to share. Have IFed in the past with best results is loss of inches but didnt realize the creamer in eating window was a no no etc. This next go around could, after watching this video, could be a game changer!

    Try to change up your fasting window to trick your body a little, positive stressor. Get more sleep. Try eating early in day and have early dinner and then fast until the next day. Drink more water. Consider warm green tea. Research has shown calories are burned better if consumed earlier in the day! Try and see if helps! I feel way better doing it that way!

    @@midlifewellnessnp that's exactly what I am doing. I moved my window of eating time from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. I am doing the 16:8 fast. It helps. I have been waking up earlier since I started fasting and it benefits me and helps me with not having to wait 5 hours before eating. I start preparing my breakfast around 8:30 a.m. and I am ready to eat at 9:00 a.m. I am hoping to move it to 8:00 a.m. with a cut off time of 4:00 p.m. That way my natural rhythm will be in sync.

    Also, make sure you are definitely experiencing a plateau. People have expectations about how much weight they should lose and how quickly, and if the weight loss suddenly slows down or stops, people jump to it being a plateau, and it might be for you. But for some, weight loss doesn’t not equal fat loss, and the weight may not be changing but the body is healing and focused on recomposition. So be sure to check whether your clothes are fitting the same. R they looser? Then you’re not experiencing a plateau, regardless of weight. Also, be sure to give it a few weeks, because there may be some healing going on you’re unaware of.

    I have a hard time believing IF is healthy unless you're also avoiding meat, eggs, and dairy products as well as not eating foods with added sugar, oil, or salt (no MED SOS).

    Yes, so can eliminating dietary triggers, like gluten, if your body reacts to it. Avoiding processed & inflammatory foods. Eat anti-inflammatory, get enough sleep, don’t over exercise, & follow your circadian rhythms!

    Most collagen has protein in it, which is made from the bones of animals, and like bone broth , collagens not for the fasted state. Check your label for ingredients. I use collagen from Vital Proteins, and it is made from grass feed animals.

    Thinking about how people used to live long ago, why can't breastfeeding women fast? They must have been doing that back then too. Maybe just have a bigger eating window? 16:8 or 18:6 window or so?

    I had a question about this as well. If the bottom line is that anyone can get the nutrients they need during their eating window, then why would IF not be recommended if you're pregnant or nursing? Especially if you're keeping yourself well hydrated.

Intermittent fasting - Intermittent fasting may involve fasting for several hours during the day or for one or more days. Fasting may occur for religious reasons or to promote weight loss [79]. The effects of intermittent fasting in otherwise healthy pregnant people are not well defined. Some authors have hypothesized that prolonged daytime fasting during pregnancy, such as during Ramadan (see 'Ramadan fasting' below), can lead to permanent epigenetic alterations in fetal physiology (fetal programming) that have adverse consequences in adult life [79]. In ovine and human studies, the most consistently reported effect of daytime fasting is reduction in fetal breathing movements, with resolution in the fed state [80-84]. There is no information on the effect of ketonuria on fetal/neonatal outcome in the absence of ketoacidosis. Nighttime fasting is better understood. During an overnight 12- to 18-hour fast, plasma glucose, insulin, and alanine levels fall, and plasma-free fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyrate levels rise, a phenomenon termed "accelerated starvation" [85]. With early conversion to fat metabolism, other fuels, such as glucose and amino acids, are more available for the fetus. Free fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyrate are also transferred across the placenta and metabolized by the fetus.

    @@tracymartinez53 Pregnant women may have gotten preferential treatment when it came to food. It may also explain alleged deaths, etc from childbirth back then and why a man had to prove he can provide before a woman would "choose" him (still seen amongst animals but our current abundance as humans has made it so men who normally wouldn't be chosen as potential mates now are). If we look at Ramadan, pregnant women are excused from fasting. Given how old this practice is, we may be able to draw that pregnant women didn't fast unless there was no food and, if not, it would be that whole "survival of the fittest." / "Only the strong survive.", etc. I don't think our ancestors purposefully fasted. I think it was part of our natural cycle and our current unnatural (albeit very enjoyable) lifestyles force us to have to mimic some natural conditions that were stressful but beneficial (like going to the gym when our ancestors were naturally active ).

    Because it's important to stay hydrated and eat healthy for not just you, but for baby as well, especially if breastmilk is all that the baby is getting. Or if you are still nursing a toddler, you don't want your milk to dry up. You are still giving a part of your life to said baby/child. It's just important to eat healthy and stay hydrated.

    I disagree, cream in my coffee has given me wonderful results , Jason Fung doesn’t consider it a “coffee creamer diet” coffee and tea are plants truly clean would only be water.

    I think the graph in Fung’s video shows that the insulin response from fat (cream) is much less than protein or carbs, but it is definitely NOT zero. She is defining a “clean” fast. Why take in fat and release any amount of insulin? Why take in outside fat? She is saying a clean fast is worth it ! Read her book!

But in his book The Complete Guide to Fasting he says in the chapter Fasting Fluids...Coffee...under the heading of What you can add to your coffee: Heavy whipping cream and whole mild and butter and coconut oil among other things. But I get the differentiation between a clean fast and a fatty fast. Why take in outside fat? I think Fung's reasoning is that it prevents hunger and aids satiety. But if fasting is not causing one to feel deprived and hungry then a 'clean fast' is much better.

    I’m doing OMAD . I feel fantastic. I swore no matter what I did or gave up , I would never give up creamer . As of Tuesday Feb. 15, 2022 , I’m drinking back coffee with cinnamon. I thought I was just going to choke it down but I actually enjoy it and changed my mindsets about the things that I said I would never give up. You really really do go on a journey of discovering as you ponder your love affair with food during the hours you are not eating . It’s rad ! No one has to tell you and you learn to shift mindsets . Also , I binge watch videos like this and I feel armed and ready to succeed daily . Can’t wait for the day where it’s all natural and it’s my life .waiting for Gins book to be delivered now.

    If you are pregnant - do you sleep? 7-8 hours of sleep equals fasting. If you have dinner at 5pm and don’t eat until 11 are you fasting. Logic is important for pregnant women as well. Would our ancestor mothers go without food? You bet they did. Instead gestational diabetes is rampant in our society? As long as the food is what you need explain the difference or is this a cover your legal behind?

    Avoiding prolonged fasts is generally recommended for pregnant women. During that time getting nutrients in is important, and it’s a good idea just to get it cleared from their doctor. I personally don’t take care of pregnant women in my practice. I also generally feel that circadian fasting is ideal for most everyone! We aren’t supposed to be eating all the time! I like at least 12 hour nightly fast for most people, but of course people can do amazing fasts sometimes! In general, KZread is for information & education, not diagnosing and treating, so typically people should always be safe and ask their own provider when making big changes. Again, I am with you, back in the day, people did not have access to the food we do today, and generally ate during daylight hours!☺️
