"You gotta believe," "you can make it," and "be the best that you can be" are such positive affirmations, to backhand all that positivity with "but don't change for me," undercuts it in such an interesting way! It sounds like the singer is pumping somebody up to "live up to your potential," even if "we both know that's not who you really are inside."

I didn't get that vibe, the first part about "live up to your potential" sounds about right, but "don't change for me" IMO is really about "don't conform to my expectations." Like being a student in class isn't about getting the right answer just to please the teacher, it's about finding your own growth and wisdom (or at least I hope that's what school is!). Love this song.

@@rsybing I think it's great that we can both enjoy this song while getting very different things from the lyrics! Maybe a part of me just refused to accept that the band who led the "Your Party Sucks!" tour of 1994 could put out a totally positive vibing song.

Its probably about the original guitarist who wrote most of their big songs back in the 90s that they kicked out of the band for his alcoholism, fucked him out of royalties, and he later killed himself.
