GIMP Tutorial - naturalistic skin and eye retouching
This video has instructions in the ANNOTATONS so if you want to read them, make sure you have annotations switched on. Click SHOW MORE below to see more IMPORTANT information on this tutorial. This is GIMP tutorial showing how to do some lovely naturalistic retouching making sure not to lose natural skin textures. For this tutorial you will need the G'MIC plugin available here: gmic.sourceforge.net/gimp.shtml
You can also view my new tutorial which shows how to install G'MIC for GIMP 2.8 here: • GIMP 2.8 Tutorial - Ho...
GIMP can be downloaded free here www.gimp.org
Unfortunately despite the fact that this video is in HD, the image of the final result is not as good as the actual edited image. So with that in mind, you can view a high quality version of the before and after shots side by side here: www.coastalartgroup.freeola.ne...
First of all, I wish to thank all commenters who have thanked me for posting this tutorial. I am very grateful for these comments.
However, this video unfortunately seems to generate more silly, idiotic and irrelevant comments than any of my other video tutorials put together. Of course I want to warn those people that I BLOCK ALL MORONS AND TROLLS and delete their comments. So beware!!!! Perhaps it's because editing of the human face is seen by some as controversial. I did not make this video to suggest that you should edit faces in this way - this is to show some of the techniques that can be used - for educational purposes to aid those using GIMP. I want to reiterate that you do not have to do this to someone's photo - if you don't like this type of editing then I humbly suggest you don't do it.
If you want to discuss the ethics of photomanipulation, then this is NOT the place to do so. There are plenty of forums all over the internet for this type of discussion. If you want to discuss the technical aspects of this tutorial or you are having problems then of course you may comment. But PLEASE KEEP IT RESPECTFUL. I also ban people who swear on all my video comments and I also BAN ALL SPAMMERS!!!!
Also be aware that this video shows several techniques in GIMP. Since this video is for educational purposes I am not suggesting that you have to use all of these techniques on a photo. You can for instance choose just to do the skin retouching, or you could choose not to do the eye retouching. In GIMP you can also reduce the intensity of the edits by reducing the opacity of the edited layers, so you can make the editing much more subtle.
Special Note on the Ethics of Photomanipulation: I do not condone the editing of celebrities to make them look better than reality, or making them look thinner than a skinned rat - the editing that is frequently seen in the press and media. The image editing I do condone is when adding what amounts to little more than a touch of make-up. My ethos is that something that resembles plastic surgery is probably not going to look good anyway.

Billy, your technique is impeccable as well as your tutoring style. One of the top 2 or 3 out of hundreds of tutorials I've seen on the net.
Yes, all of these techniques can be used for lots of different things. glad you found it useful.
Considering you are showing people how to accomplish a few things here and there, I am surprised by some of the negative comments. It was a very good tutorial.
Miles above other Gimp tutorials I have seen. THANK you for sharing!!
Thank you for this video, it was super helpful, after searching for a video that was easy to follow and didn't waste time talking for the first 3 minutes. Keep it up. :)
That's fine - no one is forcing anyone to do anything. This tutorial is to show what is possible. All the effects can be toned down as the image is edited non-destructively - you can reduce the effects by reducing the layer opacity of each effect in turn to modify it.
That was awesome! There's so much to learn in this program. Thanks for posting.
OUTSTANDING JOB!! One of my all time favorite tutorials!!
Wow! what an amazing transformation. The best I have seen for Gimp.
I know this video is old, but as it might confuse others new to Gimp, the shortcut used at 6:05 in this video to view the whole image is listed and annotated as CTRL+SHIFT+E, it should actually be CTRL+Shift+J. Thanks for the great video and tips!
WOW impressive, will have to view it several times to get a handle on the steps. Thanks for making the tutorial.
On the Newest GIMP 2.8.4 the shortcut is now CTRL+Shift+J to fit the image in the window. This tutorial was made almost two years ago, on an older version of GIMP.
Great tutorial, thanks a lot! Just one thing I need your help with: when I try to adjust the colour curves, it doesn't change anything. Any idea what it could be due to? (It doesn't show the bars on the graph like it does in your video.)
Great tutorial,,, is there a name for this technique? or is it a combination of techniques? thanks
FABULOUS!! Not sure I will ever need to do this much with a photo, but I LOVE watching you do it! WOW!!!!!!
I would agree with you, but the original is not always the best if your client requires you to edit it. The customer always gets the last say - since they pay the money.
Thank you for the compliment. Glad you liked it.
Great tutorial, thanks. Just a slight issue I've been having, when using the lasso, I've found that even when holding control when making the first points for each new object, brow, eye, etc, once I finish the second eye, for example, all my other lassoed points deselect. Any idea what could be causing this? any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I just used this tutorial on a few pictures, and they turned out really well. Thanks for posting! Is there any way to save more of the freckles from getting blurred out? Would I increase the amount of gaussian blur from 15 before doing the grain extract?
Having had a quick look againm it seems you might be selecting the face mask layer (the skin texture) and applying grain extract - however the video instructions say to select "overlay" not "grain extract"
Brilliant tutorial. Thanks for creating and sharing.
whoa. That's Nice! my hats off to you Billy. I didn't even know this was possible in GIMP, and I've been using it for 3 yrs. Incredible, I'm keeping an eye on you.
This is brilliant,,,,you make it look effortless!
Clear, precise with well paced titles. Thanks
One of the best tutos i have ever seen of face retouching thanks
Mr. Kerr, I just wanted to let you know, You're a LEGEND at Gimp! I have not seen work like this... Any and Every thing you do is Beautiful! I am VERY Impressed! Keep up the good work! =)
Loved it!!! I'm new to all photo editing software, so forgive my stupid questions. :) Is this gimp 2.6 or 2.8 and can it be done the same way with either version. I have 2.8 and when you say I need to get pluggin, does it need to be installed or placed in a folder in gimp...thanks for all your help! Wish I could print this tutorial, is there a place I can do that?
very good one, very rare people share their skill like this, keep it up.
Glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment.
did you download the correct version of G'MIC for your computer system? You need to choose the 32 bit or 64 bit version depending on which version of Windows you run. If you choose the wrong one, it won't work.
I learned so much just from this one video. Hope to learn much more from you and your videos.
Brilliant tutorial! THANK YOU! So easy when someone shows you how. You Sir are a Legend!
Amazing work on this video. It has really helped me a lot, thanks!!
Thanks for the positive feedback.
A marvelous tutorial. Thanks so much.
Hello, great tutorial, thank you very much! One quick question: When I go to do the grain extract, all of the layers go to grey except for the "mask" layer (the one with the eyes and eyebrows and stuff cut out). When I select said "mask" layer and do the grain extract, it looks more blue. The final image either looks sunburnt or just not quite right. What am I doing incorrectly?
Question now is should I delete all the plug-in files from the patterns folder? And is all the folders, like brushes, curves, fonts, palettes, templates..etc.....supposed to be empty, if not were do I get them from? I love all the things you can do with the g'mic plugin. Thanks so much for the tutorial and all the help!! Very much appreciated!!
Thanks for sharing, A very clear demonstration. Adding the catch light in the eye was excellent. I learned a lot from your example.
FANTASTIC tutorial! Thank you!
Thanks a lot, it did work (I had the wrong layer selected, as you said). And thanks again for the tutorial, you saved me a lot of money :) x
If you mean what to do if there is hair over the face, then you need to go around the hair when selecting the skin.
Glad you liked it.
awesome work !
That's probably going to be my favorite Gimp tutorial
This tutorial was done a while ago on GIMP 2.6.11 - the newest version of GIMP is now 2.8
Thank you...great work
umm I know this isn't in this vid but do you know how to put new lips on if the pics lips are messed up and should I put the new lips on before blur?
hi,great tuts, could you please show me in detail since i am new to gimp what the process is for thinning eyebrows,i`ve tried multiple ways all to no ayail, cloning, healing, distorting, they work to an extent but then when i try to apply make-up the distortions show through the overlay, thanks, joanna,i am using gimp 2.8

I wouldn't attempt thinning eyebrows in image editing software. Use a pair of tweezers, to pluck the eyebrows instead - before you take the photograph.
Nice work,very good tutorial thanks
Wow! thanks for this! I can't wait to download this one. :D
You're too kind. Anyway, glad you're enjoying my little tutorials.
Yes, I frequently use it in my job.
Great tutorial. Instant sub.
I wanted to know which software you are using.
Hi Aubrey. I think you are missing out a step. Which one I can't tell, but have you switched on your youtube annotations - full instructions appear in the annotations.
wow. great tutorial.
Sorry, meant to say the plugin you need is called G'MIC, not the layer effects - the link to get it is in the description under my video. G'MIC comes with an installer - so all you need to do is install it, and restart GIMP.
I can't get the G'MIC plugin to show up in Gimp 2.8
So good! So genuinely clever. So helpful. Forget the rest.
You don't have to do the eyes if you don't want to - and because the eye edit is on a separate layer you can reduce the effect if it's too strong by reducing the opacity - or just switch off the layer altogether if you don't like it.
Thank you!
You need to install it, and make sure the install path is set to your GIMP plugins folder: C:\Users\[YourUserName]\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins - obviously inserting your actual user name - then restart GIMP to get it to show up.
Like both the tutorial & the music. THANKS!
Thank you very much
Like I said I'm new,,,,I downloaded g'mic to download folers, clicked on gmic_gimp_win6(with a 4 under it), then gmic-1.5.40, then gmic_gimp-2.8_plugin, then _gmic, then curl and I get this messag...Program can't start because libgcc_s_sjlj1.dll is missing.....Help please!!
great work...!
Yes!! It is working now but when I went to paste the files into the C:\users\myname\gimp-2.8\plug-ins folder, there wasn't a plug-in folder so I made a new folder named plug-ins and then copied the files into it. Then I started looking at all the folders in the gimp-2.8every(21) folder was empty except the theme folder because I had downloaded themes for it and the folder patterns which had the plug-in folder, in it was gmic-1.5.4.0 with all the same files as was in the zip folder. continued...
I tried scrolling through the comments to see if this had already been asked but didn't see it. For the final touches where you lighten up the shadows, what kind of brush are you using? When I use a 050 brush it always seems to leave unnatural streaks no matter how low I set the opacity. Thanks so much!
@billps34
9 жыл бұрын
Make sure you set the brush mode to "lighten only", and then turn the opacity way down low. Then CTRL+click to sample a light skin tone area. The 050 brush should do just fine.
Nice Video!!! Very enjoyable to listen to the music while I learned!! : )
You are very, very good. Thank you! I'm brasilian, so, obrigado!

de nada. obrigado pelo seu comentário gentil.
Hi Brian. You can't have a selection inside a selection, you either have items selected or deselected. To deselect parts inside a selection press CTRL while you click to start your selection. To add parts to a selection press Shift before you start your selection. Hope that helps, if you need more info please send me a PM.
I don't have the Filter G>MIC my list ends at Script_Fu any Ideas how I can get the G>MIC?
I downloaded the 64bit...I use windows 7, What is the name of the file that is in the zip file, do I click on to install?
Thanks for posting this!! :)
wow amazing, using gimp like a pro (y) well done sir..
Which version of GIMP are you using?
What gimp are you using?
Just a quick note that I believe the g'mic enhancement filter is now under the repair option !

Yes it is, GMIC has been updated several times since I made this tutorial, they have reorganised the filters.
Nice work and very good tutorial. Thanks. But I didn't understand why you changed her eyes?
You need to hold down control to make a deselection as you click the first point. After you have made the first point, you no longer need to hold control. If you forget to hold control to select the first point, all the other points you made will be deselected and you will need to start again. If you are having trouble with this method you could also use the quick mask method to make a selection instead. To learn how to use it google "GIMP quick mask tutorial".
Yes Billy I'm looking for easy to use editing - one click - color correction, one click - brightness adjustment on slides. Thanks for the ideas.
Yes it is fiddly, but photo retouching is a fiddly thing to do well. GIMP is a powerful application, and with that comes complexity.
Awesome!
thank you!
Yes. Thank you
Hey thanks a lot for this post. I have really learnt a lot but the problem is that with the gimp 2.8. after the editing of the photo, I couldn't make use of it, because it can only save as XCF and it wouldn't open with any other file and not compatible with any other file. Please is there anything I can do about it?
@billps34

In GIMP 2.8 you need to click File > Export to save images in different file formats. In older versions of GIMP 2.6 and earlier, File > Save As was used for this purpose. In the newest GIMP, File > Save As is now reserved for saving in GIMP's own file formats. This new behaviour is described in the GIMP 2.8 user manual here: docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-images-out.html#save-export-image

Yes I did, I downloaded 64bit and I have windows 7,. Are the steps correct that I did, see last comment...the first folder was called gmic_gimp_win64.
What is the file name of the installer?
Do you use GIMP professionally?
really awesome wow
really..nice nd this video is helpful...:)
I want to draw your attention to the amended video description under this video - so I would ask if you wish to comment on this video please read the full description first by clicking "SHOW MORE" under the description. Important information is contained there - and the link to get the plugin required to complete this tutorial.
You're welcome!
O_O So many Steps. How Long did it take to figure that out?
Thanks for a great vid ! I'm using GIMP 2.8.6 and have searched online as to why, with the lasso tool, when I press the ctrl key and click to start a "deselected" area ie: around the nose/eyebrows, an options bar/menu appears instead of a new de-selection area.. could it be a glitch of using a Mac ?? I haven't figured out a way to do the de-selection area to exclude the eyebrows etc...
@billps34

GIMP 2.8.6 is a little out of date now. Perhaps you should try 2.8.10 - the most recent version. If there were any glitches they may have been ironed out in the newest version. Since GIMP is free, it's a good idea to keep it updated. I usually suggest Mac users go get the software from the GIMP on OSX site here: gimp.lisanet.de/Website/News/News.html

Oh, and one more thing. Not sure if this will fix it for you, but usually using the CTRL key is generally a Windows and Linux thing, I think the usual Mac equivalent is the Command key. Perhaps if you try it. Let me know how you get on. It'll be useful for other Mac users if that works.

Billy Kerr Hi , thanks for the reply ! I upgraded as recommended to 2.8.10 and the same problem occurs. I tried cmd, ctrl, alt, fn, shift and combinations of the above.. I must be doing some really basic mistake that I dont even know about ! I tried searching online to see if anyone else has this problem but couldnt find anything either... Pretty basic roadblock !

Billy Kerr So here is some extra info: when i would try it with the cmd tool, my initial selection would be there and the new selection's marching ants would disappear. I decided to check if that portion was nevertheless 'de-selected' by pasting it into a new layer.. it worked! Now I tried the whole thing again, and the CMD key works fine, I see my marching ants from the de-selection too.. so weird !! I guess copy-pasting it into layer kicked it into gear ? :S

Sabsijoon Yay!!! you got it to work!! Well done!!
very good, but the Ctrl + Shift + E didn´t work..
Nice!
It means you probably have the wrong layer selected, or you may have a selection made. Clear the selection using Select > None, and make sure you have the eye layer selected before you click Colors > Curves. Hope you get it to work.
