GIMP's Live Vignette Filter Is Incredible | In-Depth Look

In this GIMP tutorial, I cover the on-canvas vignette filter, or "Live Vignette," that comes with this amazing free photo editor. This features was introduced in GIMP 2.10.20 and allows you to quickly add a vignette to your images while customizing the filter and its settings live on your canvas. You can see your changes in real time while using the easy-to-use on-canvas controls to make any adjustments to the filter before applying the effect to your image. Plus, I show you a trick for a more non-destructive way of adding the vignette to your image.

I've already used most of the standard features you typically cover (e.g. masking and paths), but I really dig this vignette filter, especially that it works on empty layers!

I've been following you for years. Your tutorials are always clear and well thought out. I only do any editing when the mood strikes me or someone asks me to do something for them, but if I need to refresh my mind on anything, I always come back here.

You are quite good at explaining and demonstrating.....I subscribed and rang the bell. Will come back to you for more on GIMP...been using it ever since Photoshop changed it's billing, LOL! I still have 2.8 I think..I like the filter/sharpen more than what they replaced it with. Will have to look up to see if you have a tutorial on that before I get the one that will do the vignettes. I am intrigued by this. Had my first darkroom at age 12 and am 72 now, LOL.....photos have ALWAYS been a hobby!

Thanks for subbing and ringing the bell! I have an article I just put out on GIMP's Sharpen filter for GIMP 2.10. Probably the info you're looking for: daviesmediadesign.com/gimps-sharpen-unsharp-mask-filter-for-sharpening-photos/

I enjoy your tutorials. I do wish to ask for a more specific take on something in GIMP. I'm a fantasy Cartographer that use GIMP, and I've been trying to find the most effective way to have a texture layer for my maps but with a separate color layer where I can freely change colors but NOT have the texture layer above(or below) it to change the color values too much, but keep a good amount of texture. Any chance you can do a video on something in the line?

I use this a lot but didn't think of the rotate option, lazy me! I have used it to create layer masks as well for items to go into documents. (I remember PS when it was on a CD and had a screen capture with fade option - yes I am that old)

Thank you very much for the video tutorials. You explain very well. If it's not difficult for you, could you take a lesson, edit photos in Krita? Thank you in advance.

When you said live vignette I thought you meant a vignette in real-time on live footage, not just using a filter on a photo, that`s pretty bog standard workflow.
