3 years later and this is still helpful and easy to understand. Thank you.
I started teaching myself GIMP. Thank you for this very precise explanation of layers.
Thank you! Can't wait to pass to the next tutorial in this Gimp series!
If you are a beginner in learning GIMP...you must understand layers. It will boost you up very quickly.

太棒了,我觉得这个教程对我的帮助太大了!Thank you so much for sharing the tutorial video! Now I could use these tips in my work!
Thank you , just what i needed😊
Thanks for these tutorials, they are really helpful. Is there a way to connect several or all layers, so that you can move several or all layers together?

Yes. Save your work. Then export and "flatten" the image. I think TJ goes over thar briefly around the 5 minute mark. Then go back to your work and now open the "flattened" image as a new layer.
1:45 Heads up, if you were looking to see the background layer, notice TJ has "fill with: transparency" selected at the bottom.
Thank you for speaking slowly I understand this part of layers now.
Very nice video, thanks! One question: when you click next to the eye icon in the layer pane, there is a new icon appears. Click it again, it disappears. What is it?
Amazing tutorials, thank you so much!!!! So easy to follow and understand! I would love to see more in depth videos on layers in Gimp. Like for example how to work with png files (adding png's to jpeg background), moving png's forward and backward to achieve certain effects and so on... I currently learn how to work with digital scrapbooking kits to create new images for printing. You seem to be the only person explaining things in plain understandable for majority of public terms. Thank you very much!!! Looking forward seeing new videos!!!
thx for this much love frim bagladesh...
"were cloning transparency, were smudging transparency, were moving transparency". This reality is nothing but transparency
Love these vids, a thousand thanks!

I love your tutorial. You are easy to understand and follow. Very clear.
Thank you!

Glad to hear it , Brendan!
Thank you for this basic but important tutorial on layers.
I cannot drag the new layer when trying to drag the new layer the previous layer highlighted and drag it instead of the new layer and I think it locked and try to unlock it but can't. Any suggestions, please
Two thumbs up! Layers are now making more sense to me.
Nice video! And you have a way of keeping things simple. Thank you! )))

I thought this was great. You answered most of my questions on layers in a way that was easy to follow.
Hello TJ, First of all it's a very nice tutorial, it helps a lot. Although I have a question, how to separate the background from an image?
Just started a KZread channel and i want to do my thumbnails better so this was very helpful
PLEASE can SOMEONE explain how to UNLOCK the layers. This is the biggest pain of this whole program.
6:50 Really, really great tip, i was looking for that. (I came from photoshop, that it is the default setting there)
One thing that GIMP still can't do is selecting multiple layers + using adjustment layers (I don't know why it taking them so long to implement when Krita does have them for quite a while now.)
Cool 😎
How to download each layers from that
Thankk you man really appreciate it!!
Thank you so much for this video, very clear explanation ))
I'm trying to layer a lot of pics, so that you can see all the pics, on top of each other, at the same time. Trying to catch the movement of stars, as in a line/streak. Do you have a tutorial on how to do that?
I have four layers. When I try to scale, it's either all four or nothing. I Can't figure it out.
How to merge layers?
Thanks TG that was very helpful!

Hey, I'm looking to create an attractive thumbnail by taking one picture and putting it over another. Every time I do this, though, it takes both the picture and its white background. I just want to take away the background and keep the main part of the picture to put it over the other one. Can someone help me?

@@damondebruin1699 I finally figured it out. Turns out, it's quite easy. You add an alpha layer using the Layers setting and then use the Erase tool and remove whatever you don't want in the picture. After putting your pictures together, you have to export it as a PNG file. Hope I helped!
Thank you for sharing this helped me a lot
Great Sir Make video on Gimp Photo Retouching

there’s literally nothing on the side
Hi Ryndon, Thank you for your GIMP series. I have spent hundreds of $ for Photoshop & after 2 years, I found it was too complicated for me & much more than I needed. New to GIMP, I have a question for you: I want to create a custom desktop wallpaper of the Golden Gate Bridge with live rain from Lively Wallpaper. Is it possible to layer the bridge from GIMP (creating it as a layer) onto the live rain? (I am a beginner with advanced dreams :)
When you exported as a png why was the transparent layer white? Shouldn’t it have been transparent?

Most image viewing softwares display "transparency" as white (unlike GIMP which displays it as checkered boxes). So, in reality, the image does indeed have a transparent background, but the image viewer shows it such that it appears to have a white background. Hope that helps!
ah yes.....love this
great video
Ty.
At the side of eye icon there is a icon like chain what is it used for?
Is there a shortcut for removing a layer?

How do I duplicate a layer? I have a blue rectangle. Its job is to highlight a line of text. When I click on - Duplicate Layer - all that happens is the blue turns to a darker blue. When I click and drag on the rectangle, there is no new blue rectangle beneath it.
Why do all of these tutorials go at lightning speed as though everyone watching enough already knows what they're supposed to be doing?
How do I add a second image from my computer to a new layer?

Figured it out.. File - open as layers
a Big mistake in explaing how to add a new layer that you did not show how to make it transparent or visible. It didn't work with me so I went other videos to help me😮💨
I have meticulously followed these instructions but for some reason, if I, innocently enough, click on the backround image and then reselect the higher circle layer, it automatically toggles back to the backround layer the moment I attempt to move the circle and only moves the backround. No idea why this is happening.
