GIMP 2.10 Tutorial: How to Add a Border to Images (3 Methods)

In this GIMP 2.10 tutorial, I show you 3 methods for adding a border to your images. The first method is the fastest/easiest and involved the Script-Fu "Add Border" feature. The second is also easy and involves a layer mask. The third requires more steps but is the recommended method, especially for printing your images with a border.

The script method combined with BIMP has really saved me a lot of time, as I use to add a border manually to all my images for IG

I found all of these methods to be quite complicated. I am still surprised that such a large number of steps are required just to add a border.

This is a bitch and a half to do when you're not going off inches, but pixels (1280x720). I wanted to make a 40px border and it took quite a bit of trial and error because I didn't use a picture for this, but a second background in the foreground. Super annoying. Gimp has a super steep and time consuming learning curve for a beginner. That being said: Thank you for this tutorial.

Mr Davies is there any way to use that experimental N point deformation tool? I have Gimp 2.10.10 and its there but when clicked it shows "fatal error" msg.

May I ask for your help? I am trying to install Gmic plug in in my Gimp 2.10.10 but cannot find one tutorial or clear instructions, I installed the plug in, but it does not work. Maybe because I'm using a Mac Os X 10.13, can you at least point me some directions? Thank you in advance.

Basically perform the second method. But I prefer to do apply the layer mask on the border instead of the image. 1. create a new layer (border) on top of the composition 2. ctrl+a (select all) 3. select border layer 4. shrink selection 5. ctrl+i (invert selection) 6. fill the layer with your custom design: pattern/bucket fill/offset tool/whatever Instead of doing this there is always the possibility to use layer masks for less destructive editing: 4. fill the layer with your custom design: pattern/bucket fill/offset tool/whatever 5. shrink selection 6. ctrl+i (invert selection) 7. add layer mask from selection
